Can we have an unusual races thread? I'm planning for a couple campaigns right now and I need something other than the standards to fill out my rosters.

For example, what about borrowing from the tale of the Mares of Diomedes and creating a culture of matriarchal/amazonian carnivorous and/or cannibalistic horse-people?

Thanks for starting this thread, OP, I'm actually looking for some ideas for alien races and this does help a little. I don't have much for pictures but some things I have so far include:

>Colonial hive-mind/empathic coral mass
Technically, they're more like a mass of polyps enveloped in a moisture preserving membrane. They can form tendrils, fuse, and split colonies almost at will, and their collective intelligence has been enough that they've discovered intergalactic travel to find ideal waters. Despite being so amorphous, their empathic powers made them quickly able to understand humans and us them in kind. Their empathic abilities also mean their masses will take on some traits of other sapient life forms they encounter.

>Axolotl, octopus, electric eels
Basically, a pale, serpentine amphibious race which possess a quartet of tentacle limbs sprouting from the mantel around their neck. They can deliver low-power (doesn't feel worse than a static jolt) shock to things they touch in the surface. In their copper, iron, and sodium rich native waters though, these shocks are powerful against their prey. They've also learned to use these electrical discharges as a form of communication

>Tripods
Inspired a bit by War of the Worlds, these creatures have a three-limbed cephalopod-like larval state and eventually turn into towering tripodial spider-esque creatures with a singular eye divided into three segments. Each limb can be used for both movement and to grip things with (you guessed it) a tri-radial, tri-jointed pincer.

Still working out a name for them.

>>
>>54000772
The polyps, I admit, are a challenge at figuring out much deeper. I was thinking they might have begun to master metallurgic principles via careful manipulation of iron ores in close-to-surface volcanic vents on their homeworld.

As for eels and tripods (actually the polyps too) I don't imagine or want to write them and mono-cultural, but I'm still working out ideas.

I know that with the eels, there is a big cultural divide (and appearance split) between those who end up spending more time on land, more in the water, and those in between. It does vary a lot depending on which location on their homeworlds you encounter them.

But I do know, due to their pretty much boneless limbs and their ability to control small electric pulses from their hands, their weapons are completely incompatible with humans. (different ergonomics and because the firing mechanism relies on the 'electric impulse' ability)

>>54000911
I actually hadn't thought about that when I made them. I basically was roughly basing them off War of the Worlds Martians, then added in the 'tripodial insect/spider-crab' thing at the suggestion of a friend because it sounded kind of kickass to imagine the tripod fighting machines mirrored their 'adult' appearance.
>>
>>53988960
I fucking love these guys. Best new comic I've picked up lately.
>>
>>54004254
Depends on the setting should be stated more often. What counts as unusual varies between settings.

>>54004353
Polyps may be able to create their technology inside of their "bodies" using body processes analogous to electroplating to shape metals and other materials. The time taken to make advanced technology scales exponentially with size and building ships capable of space travel would likely require the union and cooperation of a vast number of smaller colonies
>>
>>54004743
That's true, but there are certain tropes, themes, and conciets that are considered standard for fantasy, especially TTRPGs. "Standard/Classic fantasy", if you will. Elves, dwarves, orcs, etc.
The sort of thing that if you deviate from you get people whining about special snowflakes and contrarians and faggotry
>>
>>54004743
>all that
Oh, my god, thank you. That's amazing! I hope you're okay if I do use this.

Though, I am thinking that since the effort to create their technology would have required perhaps a nearly global effort of the polyp colonies, this also means they're a rare, justified case of mono-culturalism within the species.

I suppose that would have been a given with a hivemind, colonial organism. Though in my early ideas, I had imagined that due to each organism being a colony of it's own, you'd end up with each individual being wildly independent because they're basically their own sovereign nation or at least a large community.
>>
>>54004800
And it's easy to divvy things out into broad categories to make things fit a setting.
You have standard races. Humans, elves, dwarves, and so on. You have ___folk for bipedal animal races. You have ___kin for races related to but set apart from monsters, demons, or other fantastic creatures or beings. Aliens and xenobiology open things up even more, as does magic, and so on.
There's a lot to work with to make everybody happy.

>>54005005
Go ahead and use it. You can even use both of your ideas as needed. They're a colonial race where colonies can join together or split apart. That means that there would be some degree of independence of joined colonies or influential polyps at varying levels. That may even be almost necessary for multi-step tasks such as construction and assembly.
Despite the monoculture and hivemind I suspect that they would have very complex rules for interaction among themselves, let alone others.

Heres a couple I used

>semi-sentient tapeworms

These induce great courage and daredevil behavior in infected individuals, causing them to seek out dragons to fight and hopefully get eaten so the worm can finish its life cycle. Dont bite gold coins from dragon hoards if you dont want to get infected, though some individuals do it on purpose anyway. The worms are able to telepathically communicate with their hosts, though they are not very vocal or intelligent.

>volcano snails

These are essentially ambulatory volcanos. Gigantic, snail-like fire elementals and their cinder cone shells, primordial remnants of the creation of the world, who often retained sparks of completely unpredictable wild magic. There is no telling what they might do, teleportation, time magic, and gravity manipulation were all observed among more mundane fire based effects. Luckily they are not hostile and they are content just wandering around following ancient ley lines and seeking out mineral veins to eat, thought they are completely ignorant of what they wander through. Oceans, dragon lairs, cities. They are sentient and able to reproduce but their life cycle is geological in scale. Sometimes they congregate in the hundreds or burrow for millions of years but no one knows why.

>the guiding mother.

An ancient terraforming spaceship, derelict in orbit, its AI still trying to carry out its orders. Though its genetic banks were damaged, the ship has decided to guide evolution and society till it can successfully breed back the race who built it and an ecosysem to support them. The ship also revealed its presence as a godess to many tribals to gain followers for the great work through wonders like fire from the sky(through laser batteries) and artifacts like unbreakable metal tools, weapons and strange battlearmors to her favored.
>>
>>54013783

contd.

>a race of angry atheist antelopes

Cursed by their god to wander around as animals, they violently hate everything related to divine magic. Because they have no opposable thumbs or any way of manipulating their environment, they kept their civilization alive through oral history and by allying themselves with steppe nomads who quickly saw the value in having intelligent mounts who HATE all those temple-building, god-worshipping city folk. They also like stupidly long horse names, war chants, and impaling things on their horns.

>the university of eternity

A cabal of archliches who got bored of power and ruling realms and dedicated their lives to the research of theoretical magics and the nature of spacetime. Joining them is invitation-only though they are known to meddle with mortal affairs if they particularly need something, reagents, sacrifices or information, though they rarely need to use actual force. Many consider them the logical conclusion of wizarding curiosity.

>sentient metal

No one knows where it came from. Maybe it escaped from the forge of the dwarven god of metallurgy, came from another dimension or some practical joke of an alchemy master. There is about 200 tons of it around and it can be split however many articles, it retains its sentience even in molecular shards, its even aware where its other parts are located. The weirdest thing is, the sentient metal has a weirdly upbeat personality, is very talkative and loves to serve mortals. It can rearrange itself into various articles, blades, armor, spoons on demand when asked nicely though it particularly likes utensils for some reason. It also respects posession most of the time but it can not be looted violently. Sometimes sentient metal objects disappear and reform into other items somewhere else, though not before profusely apologizing for the inconvenience.

I'm not quite sure myself. I find it a lot harder to do than fantasy stuff, though mainly it's on the civ/society end. Trying not only to come up with the way an alien society might work, but then come up with enough to imply thousands of years of history and culture and such.

I think that in general you should come up with some standards for the "common" dominant species and then work from there. You probably want most of them to have reasonably terran biochemistry and environmental tolerances (though permanently suitbound races are sometimes fun).
Probably want a handful of body plans unless you want to try to develop ergonomics and logistics for like 300 different forms. You can get a lot of mileage out of like three or four if you're creative, IMHO

Beyond that, it's just sort of a mater of creative liberty, trying to strike a balance between too human and incomprehensibly alien

>"I wanna play a tiefling!"
>"I wanna play a drow!"
>"I wanna play a tengu!"
>"I wanna play a [insert blue-skinned homebrw race here]"

No.
I am so sick of these fucking niggers who think they are allowed to play whatever they want in my campaigns. No, your shitty tengu is not allowed. No, your ratfolk is not allowed. No, your catfolk is not allowed. No, your tiefling is not allowed: that is a literal fucking demonspawn. Why the fuck would that be allowed in any campaign, let alone this one? No, you cannot play a drow. You will be shot on sight on the surface. Half these fuckers don't even read Drizz't so they have no excuse for wanting to play a drow, besides "lol it's different." Fuck different. Here's the thing: your race is the most boring fucking part of your character. Unless you do something interesting with it (which 90% of these stupid cunts don't do), then you are just weighing down the game. When you have a thri-keen, some homebrew furry shit, a tiefling and some fuck who wants to play kender, you know what? Fuck this. I made a setting that actually feels somewhat like the real world because it doesn't have 90 different races running around like it's motherfucking Mos Eisley cantina. It's not my fault that YOU are a bad roleplayer who can't be satisfied playing something out of the core book. Create an interesting character, and you can play as a human for the rest of your RPG career. I had groups that were entirely human yet they had personalities that seemed like real people. But no, no one wants to lump in 30 homebrew races plus 60 official wizards of the coast crapshit races they pump out like chocolate because they know it will keep people entertained and requires zero effort on their part. No DM worth shit wants to spend hours and hours putting that in his world. Play. A. Fucking. Human. You need to EARN the privilege of playing another race.

I didn't expect them to be creative. It's okay to have simple and ordinary races whose appearance quickly convey their purpose and whose culture doesn't really matter.

I'm just baffled they had a scifi writer work on this if they wanted to go for forgettable and super simple.

is the best he could come up with.
>>
>>54005319
What I always find absurd with weaver is that he's a good creative writer and he has a solid understanding of poses and theme, but he's not creative artistically, he can't really draw THAT well even if he's been at it for almost 13 years(I still like his art but man, he's a slow one) and all his characters are esentially just basic shapes, mostly triangles.

Its nothing major, since he manages to bring out the good even with his bad and he has his moments, i'm just saying, mostly basic shapes.

>If you are on here, you should prolly be able to know why they hate them though.
Because of stale Something Autistic memes? I'd say most people are pretty much sick of the joke by now, especially since there are far more malicious subcultures to worry about. If you actually play games in the real world and not through shitty online meetups, you'll find the presence of those icky furries is far overblown. Now, weebs on the other hand...

You should try not letting the internet dictate your interests and fears. It helps you enjoy things more.
>>
>>54025659
>jokes

Eh. It's not a joke. The hate comes from furrys spamming the boards and trying to inject their fetish into every thread. Also fursonas didn't help. It has cooled off some since mlp got it's own board. Grated this thread doesn't deserve all the shit posting. I've posted several images in it.
>>
>>54026027
It really doesn't. Most of it is just residual meme-tradition, and grudges created by them. You start spazzing out at furries because it's the thing to do, and then you can justify it to yourself because the furries spazzed out in turn. I've had a lot of people set out for the magical realm, and I've gamed for a lot of furries. There's not much overlap between the two sets.

As long as you're not playing online it doesn't even matter in my experience, if a group trusts you as a GM then they're going to trust you won't have magical realm shit just because you have some wolfmen, beetle people and centaurs in your setting. A wholly beastfolk setting might make some wary but that's about it.
>>
>>54027707
I have never had a real problem with it, then again I usually don't actually put too many beast-people in my settings as I don't usually run games where they would fit.

Played in a game online with some furries, its ok so far.

What! I posted an idea for telepathic tapeworms the other day! Though your idea is better. Though they sound more like the protozoa toxoplasma gondii (rats=people, cats=dragons), Dicrocoelium dendriticum (ants=people, cows=dragon) or Euhaplorchis californiensis (fish=people, birds=dragons).

I'm stealing your spaceship idea, tbf.

Mate, I've been on the internet for most of my adult life (sadly). And this memery about furries inserting their fetish into everything?

It only barely existed in that form 15 years. 15. Years. And I wasn't on some rando forum, either. I was on a high quality roleplaying forum, and we had all of one open furry player. And yes, his open furryness got him a lot of shit. Then again, looking back at it, the politically active normies on the non-RP forums were much, MUCH more obnoxious than the few furries ever were. And THEY were the people who eventually piled into the RPG forums and destroyed them. Not the furries.

So what was it the furries did? They had furry avatars, occasionally talked about furry shit, and had a predisposition to wanting to play anthro races. Honestly, my edgy teen ass inserted way more Magical Realm shit into games than that sole furry ever did. And by all rights, we may have had more furries who simply weren't open to the fact. I was a big TES fan, so I did insert a cat race into my Fantasy setting. Everyone on /tg/ would lose their shit and call that Magical Realm, too.

And that's because /tg/ has a slightly warped view of reality, and uses this ancient view of furries to warrant a lot of shitposting, just as you've seen in this thread. It's literally a meme, at this point. A self-replicating cultural behaviour that exists without outside influence.

Bronies and furries aren't the same thing, and the SA anti-furry meme predates Bronies by literally a decade. What we saw with Bronies, however, is very similar to what we saw with furries years ago: A new group in love with their own newfound agency acts obnoxiously before they figure out the social rules surrounding them as a group.

But you can have this shark thing.

You, your samefag bait, and your shitposting need to fuck off.

I would hope to see that you have the self awareness to realize that when somebody comes on /tg/ talking about dumb political bullshit, you'd realize they were trolling. But you suddenly and absolutely believe that when the 'furry invasion' happened, after goons and 4channers alike saw how it made people so angry, that every single one of the furries who were forcing their fetish everywhere were legitimate, not a single one was a troll trying to stir up trouble? This is literally how stupid you are.

I find it hilarious that you retards continue to shitspot your nonsensical hatred of 'furries', as if that is even a group that exists or can be categorized. You do realize most people on this website have seen and jerked off to furry porn right? Does that make them furry? Is that furry? I wanted to be a gnoll make you a furry? It's completely 100% irrelevant to anything in this thread and yet you continue to shitpost about it against and again, hoping that the /tg/ hivemind will agree with you so you can look cool and tough on the internet, but people are really fucking tried of your bullshit, namely me, here to *inserts paw into your tailhole*.

Shut the fuck up, stop shitposting. Stop ruining every thread with anthro characters, from Redwall to Ironclaw you faggots cannot stop bringing up furries. You seem to have a serious issue with even the thought that someone somewhere might want to jack off to the idea of furry animal people, but a literal thread about why elves would prefer anal sex was just on this board this week, and that's totally ok. Fat virgins imagining themselves as wolf dudes are apparently a huge issue and horrible blight on this board, but faggots who constantly want to jerk off to put smut all over this board about their elf/orc/goblin waifus are just being funny haha.

Literally kill yourself. Stop breathing.

It's similar to GR15, MLP is 7 years old and nobody cares about it anymore other than a few turbo-autists but if they lifted the rule I guarantee tons of people would start posting pone in every thread with the frequency of the pony spam in 2010 solely to piss people off. I disagree, if mostly because the people enforcing that rule do so in the most arbitrary ways, the only times something "Furry" is ever a problem being posted is pretty much always something that breaks a different rule anyways

but honestly I'm personally in favor of getting rid of any form of moderation on this site cause it just doesn't work right

The reason anthromorphic animal races are a common fantasy alternative is because it's easy to comprehend.

Take this fucker. He's a thriddle. Try to describe it in a single sentence.

"Small featherless turkey without the beak but instead a vagina mouth and eyestalks."

Instead of:

"A blonde human with pointed ears."

"A green lizard that stands like a man."

Both are incredibly lazy, but it works really well according to the crowds.

I personally love the truly alien, but the problem is no one likes playing them.

It's uncomfortable or something for someone to insert themselves into a hexapodal fungi-like psychic gestalt that is actually three minds working as one body.

Skyrealms of Jorune and Tekumel taught us this. I'm sad both had such obtuse systems to help bury them under other games.

I love this thread. Keep up the fun.

It's also hard to get good representative art, and hard for players to find character art that fits. Keeping it very close to human like elves means you can just use human images or edit them slightly, and furry races are a way to have something unique that isn't completely impossible to find illustrations of.

Another reason why they're easier is because they come with assumptions and things to build on when it comes to culture, mentality, habitat, diet, intelligence and so on.

Tiefling and Drow are literally in the core rule book you faggot.

And dont blame shitty players for using the races wrong. My current favourite player is using a white dragonborn to great effect, and not only feels like an actual person, but also has a lot of conflicts internally and externally.
