Quick Start!! is about japanese high school girls playing TTRPGs (and it actually includes a decent amount of info to learn about them, or at least explains them well enough to get the joke)
It's fun seeing the same player styles in Japan and the characters are cute as well. For example, one of them is a powergamer to the extreme but that's only because she has terminal bad luck and despite having the most optimized build always dies first.

The problem I see with Dungeon Meshi and Wizard's Soul is the fact that they don't reflect the mindset of an average /tg/-goer.

Wizard's Soul is basically just the same as any other competition manga, like Saki and wouldn't be any different if you replaced the local MtG ripoff with a different game.
Dungeon Meshi is a great adventure that is basically Lodoss 2.0 (or maybe Slayers 2.0), but it's about in-universe characters, not actual players.

Seki, on the other hand, while not strictly about /tg/, reflects the mindset of an average /tg/-goer almost to a T, which is having fun in any way you can - the Tic-Tac-Toe threads, the creative worldbuilding and roleplaying and pretending - Seki-kun encapsulates all this shit in a fun little manga.

They're usually too much of a hassle to actually win with, so they're relegated to casual stuff.
Actually getting them off in a big tournament? That would be impressive. But nobody does that, because it's not worth the risk.

In most TCGs, if you cannot draw a card when it is obligatory to do so (like the Draw Phase), you lose by default. It's partially meant to be a stopper to prevent a really lackluster/slow death if a player has literally no options to them and the other would take a few turns to defeat them naturally, and by enforcing it as a rule you can create strategies like that one to create those situations. Mill was a fun decktype for me in YGO, which luckily came before this whole "Graveyard/banished is just a separate hand" theme.

'deck default' is not an established term, it's just something the translator came up with. Forcing an opponent to draw their whole library is relatively rare compared to mill their whole library and does not have a shorthand.

Yeah, iirc her editor helps her with the card design. What I've gathered so far is that it's MTG with stats multiplied by 500, creatures have a Soul stat in addition to strength and toughness, and creatures that die become Soul Crystals which some cards use as a resource.

Hopefully the soul stat and the icons are explained later on in chapter notes

Offhand, it seems as though you can't play instants from your hand, you have to play them from the facedowns on the field.

Also, given that Manaka only ever puts one card down like that at a time (again, IIRC) you're probably restricted to one facedown play per turn.

Like every manga/anime about a (card) game, the game is just a plot device for the characters to express themselves in. The difference here is that they actually did some research, unlike most other manga where the "game" is just a bunch of bullshit slapped together.
I mean, Wizard's Souls is also guilty of this, because it's a fantasy world where a lot of things are settled by children's card games and it's way too big, but since it just focuses on the tournament and the people in it, you can see the inspirations quite clearly, especially if you know a thing or two about MtG. It shows just enough to make the "game" believable

One of the omake mentions that she asked her assistant (or editor, maybe?) to give her the rules for one of the CCGs he keeps inventing as a hobby in his spare time, so the basic mechanics are most likely quite complete; at any rate it's not a Yu-Gi-Oh situation where the writer just spergs out at random according to the requirements of the plot.

Whether the rules are robust enough to hold up as a beyond-MtG scale megasuccess is another question, and personally I frankly doubt it. But I think the main obstacle to it being a *playable* game is probably just lack of developed cards.

this is the real deal. wizard's soul isn't supposed ot be a game, and one of the biggest problems with yu-gi-oh is that htey turned a plot device into a game and half the shit that was supposed to be in the game didn't make any god damn sense.

The author of WS is an MTG player, and most of the effects reference real mtg cards, I think a lot of the differences like face-downs and soul crystals are mostly to keep trademarks out of the equation, as they haven't been huge plot points either (the sacrificing of soul gems was the biggest one, but even then it was just "that spell requires you to sacrifice [a resource] so it's kinda bad")
