If this dude is really your friend, have a chat with him about it, but more importantly talk to them both.

Try to find out what kind of game they both want to play, if you all are serious about showing her how fun gaming can be then you should at least ask her.

If it really is fantasy, tell them that you aren't really comfortable running D&D and suggest some alternatives, if they continue to say no just say sorry, you aren't really interested but you wish them both the best.

No. You shouldn't feel obligated to put in a lot of work for something you're not interested in. Not only that, but chances are that the quality of your campaign would suffer. I mean, would rather be in a game that the GM liked, or one he disliked?

Just say no. Run a rules-light game that interests you if you don't want to bog his GF down with rules that might tangle her up in the future.

Nothing kills a game faster than a GM not invested which is why all the advice that says you should build a campaign around what the players want is well meaning but ultimately flawed unless the GM and the players have incredibly similar tastes.

Brand recognition. Also, as far as mainstream RPG books go, they have the best editing which makes the learning process a whole lot easier. I'd also like to make the argument that having a list of codified actions helps with the youngsters of the age who have played some sort of rpg on the pc/console growing it. Helps them relate better. This is of course anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt.

If she is your friend, find out what kind of games interest her, and tailor the game to suit her interests. If not, run a system you like for a game style that interests you.

The only way anyone gets 'the glory of rping' is if they are into that style of game. So, run the game that is a style you are into. Do pokemon in space if that's your thing. Run a medieval political game using Dread, if you want. Hell, break out Mount and Blade to run Spelljammer.

Just, don't make rpgs a chore. It'll suck for everyone involved.
