/tg/ we need to learn how to get real nuts again.

We need to make a setting, but not one with some big complex backstory to start out with, no fancy shmancy philosophy. We just need one simple idea and to go wild with it.

We need a skeleton setting. Main race is sentient skeletons. They're spooky and they like to rattle their bones. No other rules, go.
>>
Antagonist race of literal muscleman meatheads
>>
>>53917170
Their war has been going on for a thousand years.
>>
>>53917111
Skeleton society propagates itself how? Liberating new Skellies from bodies or by rattling each others bones to make little baby Skellies?
>>
>>53917322
Both. They take skeletons from the living, freeing them from their meat prisoners, and also reproduce through intense bone rattling. The skeleton kingdom is overpopulated and it is doing harm to them, but they just can't stop their quest for bones.
>>
>>53917353
And so they create space craft, to propagate bones through the stars
FTL yay or nay?
>>
>>53917322
They reproduce by budding, sometimes skeletons will grow a literal boner on their pelvis and it will detach itself from the skeleton when it grows to 5-7 inches in lenght.
Then the boner will take the shape of a skull and become conscious and intelligent (that's why you have many immature animated skulls in fiction, they are mentally mature but still very young skeletons children)
They will grow the rest of their skeletons in decade and half but are mainly active before adulthood as skulls and when they get arms to crawl on the ground.
>>
>>53917435
I would say nay. The skeletons have plenty of time to wait. They probably pull a Necrons thing and just hang out in space coffins or tombs until they land on a new planet to bone. FTL is for the meatheads who's weak flesh can't handle the dangers of time.
>>
>>53917478
Does good calcium increase the budding rates of skeletons?
>>
>>53917111

The skeleton god is a matrioska brain made out of trillions of interlinked lich skulls placed in orbit around the sun and siphoning its magical energy.
>>
>>53917532
Of course!
>>53917557
METAL

There is a faction of skeletons who enhance their skelebodies with genetically altered bones or through use of cybernetics. How would wide skeletonry view them?
Cyborg skeletons probably reproduce through CLANGCLANGCLANGCLANG instead of RATTLERATTLE
>>
>>53917557
The greatest honor a leader of skeletons can receive is to have their skull taken off and fired into space to join the matrioshka skull.
>>
There's never a short supply of bones but skeletons have to find and gather them. They send bone hunters and bone merchants to acquire any and all bones. Dead animals are defleshed and harvested for their bones. There are grave robbers who specifically take the bones of the dead to trade with skeletons on a bone black market.
>>
The more bone mass a bone construct has the greater its magic power. However, skeletons also know that power can neuter itself when it loses form and function. Furthermore, bones only animate when they are properly connected. A pile of bones is still nothing more than a pile of bones.
>>
>>53917599
The cyberskellies are disliked by many pure boned skeletons because they see their use of metal as an insult towards the power of traditional skeletal structure. The skeleton kingdom accepts them though, as they still lead to the creation and further development of skeletonkind.
>>
>>53917634
>Most non-skeleton empires fear and hate the skeletons for obvious reasons
>But the skeletons are such a huge force in thiss galaxy that are constantly looking for bones and are willing to pay top dollar for them if need be
>The Bone Trade is a major part of the economy
>>
>>53917478
>>53917634
>>53917665
Skeletons can recover from all injuries short of too much skull damage, they will even regrow lost bones (and even reject too damaged one) but it can take years for the biggest ones so mutilating yourself or other skeletons is not a viable way to get bones even if forced mutilation and slavers "farmers" exist.
>>
Skeletons are like dwarves in that many of them live in underground cities and mines. As they build out their cities, they intentionally try to get under the graves of the dead to steal their skeletons right from under them.
>>
The skeletons retain some of the memories of the bones previous owners. As such, bones of skilled warriors, archwizards, or master thieves are worth their weight in gold.
>>
The skeletons, whether taken from the living or produced, are their own beings separate from any soul. The ghosts of those former living people still exist, and they don't like their skeletons walking around on their own.
>>
Skeleton animals are just as sentient as humanoid skeletons. In fact, one of the lichmind's most trusted lieutenants is a skeleton crocodile
>>
>>53917755
Some kingdoms systematically grind bones into a fine powder as disposal. Bone grinder is a trade, a guilded trade at that.

Necromancers are valued for their abilities to enslave, dispel, or even properly communicate with skeletons. They are not considered evil on general principle. You don't have a real kingdom unless you have a court necromancer on your council.
>>
Did meatmen form around skeletons or were skeletons freed from the meat?
>>
>>53918149
That's the question they've been waring over for a thousand years.
>>
>>53918133
>A photo of Finn Skellibones, the first ambassador between the Skeleton Kingdom and the Merman Kingdom.
>>
Both meatmen and skeletons fear the terrifying skinwraith, a humanoid monster that's thin enough to slide under a door or through a cracked window. They envelop their prey and puppet it around in some horrible attempt at normalcy. Both sides blame the other for the existence of skinwraiths.
>>
Skeletons are bones that refuse to die.
Zombies are flesh that refuses to die.
Ghosts are souls that refuse to die.
Vampires are blood that refuses to die.
>>
>>53917599
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?
>>
>>53918294
Meatmen, obsessed with growing their muscles, try to wrestle the skinwraiths into submission. The skeletons, however, pick select warriors to file their bones down to points in order to slice through skinwraiths if captured.
>>
Each skeleton decides on its own job, based on a list prepared for it by the Skeleton Kore Under Legal Lawmakers. Some even deign to be modified to make their job easier. As such, Public Transport in Necro York is mostly via SkeleVehicles.

they could be akin to the vampires of this setting. evolved/transmutated from detrivores and other pests, that slip seamlessly into society just to break open the bones of their victims and eat the marrow. they don't like the sunlight because in broad daylight the fact that they ere actually bugs becomes easier to spot.
>>
The skeletons worship the giant collection of lich skulls in space, but legend says that heretic skeletons (or skeretics) in the darkest, deepest parts of the skeleton cities attempted to create their own skeleton god by collecting as many normal bones as they could of all shapes and sizes and tying them together, forming a nightmarish skeleton spider monster. Mother skeletons tell their skeletonlings to behave or the Skider will steal their bones for its collection.

During the Human-Skeleton Guerrilla wars, the #1 used warbeast by man were hyenas, due to their natural, bone-crushing instincts.
>>
Skeletons can fuse together in times of danger, creating GIANT SKELETONS that are the combined strength of all of their parts.
These get almost nowhere, because of the squabbling of the legs and arms (and other parts) on where to go.
But in times of danger, when entire skeleton nations combine, these are very powerful indeed.

We've received mixes on how Skeletons reproduce. Have we reached a consensus on how?

Also, maybe Skeletons & Meatmen can be the equivalent of Elves and Dwarves?

Both pairs typically dislike themselves, and fight for years on ridiculous reasons.

Skeletons would be like elves because they are thin and agile. They also have liches who are great at magic, much like Elven Wizards. Meatmen are like dwarves because they are bulkier.
>>
Obviously, humanity thinks that they came first, and all the meat and bone based life forms either evolved from them or were created by dark magic. However, the skeletons believe that they were always the first beings, and that dark magic resulted in them being cursed with flesh and muscle. The meatheads think that skin and bone are punishments for not getting enough gains.

But human mothers' bones actually do become weaker if they don't get enough calcium during pregnancy. In that case, the unborn child's skeleton is formed out of calcium drawn from it's mothers' bones. That can result in serious health problems.

Humans don't know how skeletons do it, however. That's calcified information.
>>
okay are zombies just considered young zombies that haven't grown out of their flesh?
>>
>>53920016
>How does one determine truly genuine royal bones?
There's no way to know for sure, only supposition based on the extremely precise records of exact dimensions of the bones of recorded nobility.

Still, this hasn't stopped many famous and noble skelehouses from feuding over who has the real royal bones and who has clever fakes.

Naturally, asking a royalton to submit to the humiliation of a bone inspection in order to prove their lineage is the highest breach of protocol and decency, so they just go to war instead. After all, nobody has to know if you took the femur off of Lord Ribleyshire after the battle.
>>
>>53920083
Perhaps zombies are a result of humans with so much hatred in their hearts for skeletons that their bodies refuse to fully decay and release the skeleton trapped inside?

The zombie walks as a mindless prison, just to keep the skeleton trapped as long as possible, turning others into zombies so those skeletons can't be freed either.

There was a coolish movie I saw once where a species of bug was hunting some geologists for their bones, it made its nest using the skeleton and they would work together to move it about.
They kept "killing" the thing, rendering its old nest unusable, so it would have to hunt down a new target.
Movie itself wasnt great but the concept for the monster was 10/10 and cohesive throughout.

Due to a lack of vocal cords they used two languages at once, a standard sign language (which everyone in the setting could do to some degree) and something that everyone else had taken to calling "chattering" which was a clacking or grinding of the teeth (or sometimes offsetting of the jaw) which indicated emotion or intent. For instance, shifting your lower jaw far to the side and holding it shut implied sarcasm.

Basically, a skeleton could sign "That's a great idea" at you and if you didn't understand how chattering worked you got a completely different understanding from someone else.

It was a fun setting.

The wisest ones are fired at the sun where they join the immense matrioska brain >>53917557

The others, if their skulls are destroyed, collapse into inanimate tangles of bone.

Otherwise, a skeleton can choose to voluntarily give up his life and have his skull ritually destroyed, ending his existence and allowing his bones to be spread amongst his friends and family. As >>53917872 pointed out, the bones themselves retain some skill of their former owner from a lifetime spent with them. Obviously a skeleton can also give up individual bones to others.

All three - humans, skeletons and meatmen - are right. However, it goes a bit deeper than that. Humans and skeletons were indeed both first, as some bones were imbued with life spilled over from the imbuing of humans, becoming skeletons. A few centuries later, mankind and bonekind had advanced their science to a level where they could replicate other mythical beasts in physical form...which backfired, as many of the mythical beasts rebelled against their creators and threatened to bring an apocalypse. In desperation, the scientists began to separate humans into three component creatures - skeletons, meatmen and skinwraiths - in order to eradicate their own creations. A few more centuries later, the three new races kill the last mythical replicant, but not without cost - killing the electricity-consuming Ramuh necessitated a return to the dark ages, before electrical engineering when steam was king. the long battle had taken it's toll on all the races, and only the skinwraiths remember anymore, trying to get their amnesiac fragments to reunite by showing them the skinwraith's role in this. A skeleton inserted into a meatman results in a demicreature - the wight - and inserting this into a skinwraith results in reunion of a given human converted to the three species in the first place. Of course, the disfusion technology which created the three races wasn't perfect, and fusing three fragments of different humans results in an unstable individual called a patchwork. Even if the fragments are of the same human, the skeleton or the meatman may not remember everything from their human life leaving the resultant human amnesiac, or worse, a patchwork, and born meatmen are useless in fusion other than as filler to patch up where the original isn't enough.

Secondly; I'm guessing we're all good with having skeletons of both genders but since they don't have genetalia I'm thinking the should be functionally hermaphroditic, I'm not saying all skeletons are gay but it makes sense to me that two lady skeletons can have a child together
>>
>>53925488
since bones can be switched it seems that they wouldn't be locked into certain professions, they can take a human body and keep the horse head, while a human skull could attach to a horse and fulfill that duty
>>
>>53925462
>the skinwraiths are just trying to return everyone back to humanity
>because of the ravages of time on memory and the different beliefs the skeletons and meatmen have, the skinwraiths are just seen as monsters trying to keep them in fleshy prisons.

The skeletons can reproduce with any skeleton of any gender, but since memory fragments are kept in their bones, they still consider themselves men or women depending on who they were (or who they wanted to be) when alive.

Skeletons are the only remainder of the post-post-apocalypse Undead Necromancer god. Earth is completely lifeless, they wander on Earth, only held there by gravity, and new skellingtons are made (well, discovered) by systematic digging for bones.

I was thinking about adding a side note about vampires being a failed fourth prong of the disfusion process, being intended for aquatic or aerial combat, but turning to vampires as written about in >>53918341 with an obsession of extending their own body with the blood of others when something went wrong, and being the offspring of the four who were created before the vampire prong was shut down as a failure.

But i reasoned it'd go over the character limit and sap too much of the setting space. Oh well...

>tfw you keep writing skinwalker when you meant to write skinwraith
>>
Due to their lack of comprehensible STRONG BONES, arthropods who keep their skeletons on the outside are seen as Uncanney Valley monsters. They took the first steps in the right path by keeping their skeletons on the outside, but they messed up the skull, the ribs, the bone-rattling. Even worse, they filled their skeleton with meat, which is even more blasphemous than having meat on the outside of a skeleton.

While a fleshy prison is horrible to a skelly, it's far worse to carry that prison around inside oneself. This has led to many metaphors and symbols in literature- someone who cannot escape their past, whose past limits and artificially restricts them bringing suffering, is referred to as a crab or a spider. Warlike skeletons who wish to use their STRONG BONES to spread their own internal suffering to others are likewise tied to scorpions.

Ancient human artwork featuring skulls are interpreted by the skeletons as prophecies of the glory to come, and use them as evidence that even the ancients understood Skellyman supremacy. Practically all Death symbolism that didn't get spelled out directly is liable and likely to be seen as the predecessor to Skelly culture, a subconscious desire of those old skeletons to free themselves, or even coded messages between the imprisoned skeletons of that era.

A classic (and racially insensitive) practice in skeleton theater is to put on human plays with the Skelton actors wearing poorly made fake skin costumes, usually made from rags or cloth. They go through the play, mocking the plights of the living through their over the top acting. All dead characters are played as normal skeletons lying on stage, with added dialogue where the skeleton will directly talk to the audience to mock the events.

Chattering has two sublanguages
Common Chatter is what most non skeles see and know, and what skeles use to communicate in public or with strangers, friends, associates, etc. This version typically uses only the head and shoulders to show meaning.
Intimate chatters, also called Royal or Family chatters, is only used among family, very close friends, royalty (Its expected lower nobles use it when speaking to higher ones), and loved ones. This version uses the entire boney body and generally can give more emphasis to certain phrases.
For example: I love you in common chatter means they're good friends, but in royal chatter it means intimate love when said by rattling the ribcage or an extreme show of loyalty when the knees are involved.

Skeles can take well into adolescence to fully grasp royal chattering. It is considered to be the pinnacle of skele language as it is impossible for any fleshy creatures to communicate with it.

Examples of skeleton cuisine include:
Burgers with excessive amounts of cheese, typically several varieties matching the volume of the meat patty, with the patty being braised in milk before being fried. Served with fried cheese curds or cheese sticks.
Milk braised steaks, typically cooked for long periods similar to barbeque.
Skeletons are master cheese makers, milk not storing well for long periods on the rare occasions there is surplus made them develop many techniques for cheese making. As such skeleton rations are dry cheeses with hard rinds. Also made for the populous in the form of crackers.
Ice cream is a common summer treat, the skeletons have created over 1 million different flavors. Ranging from pure cream, to vanilla, to roasted beef.
Yogurts are popular, and serves as baby food as its higher in calcium then regular milk. Seen being given to baby skeles, and to wounded skeletons to replenish bone mass.
Powdered milk is another ration food, however the skeletons have found a way to make powdered yogurt and cheese as well.

Some male skeletons really like the obviously fake, "bolted-on" plastic bones, some want natural extra ribs, some prefer the standard 12 pair.

There's an ongoing and vociferous debate on skeleton imageboards over whether it's gay to be into cartoon male skeletons with 13 pairs of ribs and uncommonly wide hips.

How does the Matrioshka Brain function in the hierarchy of the skellies? Obviously being so huge and made of so many important skulls, it must be incredibly smart, but does it directly influence the actions of the skeleton governments? Is it simply a voice that most skeletons should listen to, but don't necessarily need to, like a giant parental figure? Or perhaps the brain just floats there in space, doing nothing but inspiring the skeletons to collect more bones and advance skellington kind.
>>

It's a superintelligence, and it knows exactly what it needs to do to create the best outcome for skeletonkind. Though few aside the highest of priests and liches truly understand it, all skeletons find great comfort in its existence.

So as to make it a perfect blend of different societies getting along well in pursuit of flesh? or do they forget and get molded into skele culture?
>>
>>53946013
Are you saying that people making "communities" ruin it, or shitposters calling them out ruins it?
>>
>>53946470
Because most skeletons are generally different than the people they were when they were alive, they more often than not wind up adopting the greater skeleton culture rather. However, since memory is still a factor hidden deep in their bones, the skeletons will subconsciously gravitate towards activities and situations that appealed to them in life. So if a skeleton was a samurai while alive, and they found samurai armor while scavenging for bones, they'd have an impulse to wear it.
>>
>>53946491
>>53946538
So I'd say it's a bit more of the former than the latter, though to a human or meatman onlooker the skeletons would appear to have a mostly homogenous society.

Dont forget the extra bone males have :^)

Good. But what about Matryoshka god-skull?

fake and gay meatman parody

>their Necromancer equivalents use flesh to create living beings
>>
>>53949801
Call them Carnomancers. And unlike flesh golems, they literally mastered the act of creating living organisms by building them around a creature's skeleton, resulting in the regular version.

Such an art is obviously considered highly unethical and absolutely disgusting.
>>
>>53949718
That too is a hive mind of the greatest skeletons, floating in space and acting in the best interests of all skeleton kind. I think this anon's breakdown was great. >>53940341

So, between the meatmen, ooze parasites, the zombies, gnolls, and skinwraiths, which race poses the greatest threat to the skeletons?

Humans might be a threat too but I imagine that in this setting with so many races determined to kill or transform them, humanity really gets the short end of the stick.
>>
>>53949825
Carnomancy could be a really effective torture strategy on skeletons. Imagine making a skeleton come back to life, but their personality is still that of the skeleton. You've trapped them in meat and flesh again, and have taken away all of their perks of being skeletons.
>>
>>53950042
Being trapped inside a prison of flesh sounds like a hilariously cruel way to punish the worst of the worst in their community.
>>
>>53949893

Should be a canine race, it would be fucking hilarious.
>>
>>53950135
The gnolls are acting as an answer to the "dogs like bones" race. Some other posts suggested that the humans used to use hyenas against enemy skeletons since they eat bones, but the hyenas turned against everyone, evolved into gnolls, and now go around chasing anything with bones to eat.
>>
>>53950075
Speaking of the worst in their community, what crimes do skeletons commit against each other? Stealing people's bones is an obvious one, along with stealing milk/cows from the milk farms, but what crimes can skeletons really do?
>>
>>53950389
Well, one thing that would be hard is stab someone.

Anything else a human can do, a skeleton can probably also do, not including anything involving bodily fluids, including rape.

Then again, as long as skeletons have a sex drive, there can probably be rape even without any fleshy bits.

Stealing bones that have fallen off their in body to repair themselves?

>Are you saying that people making "communities" ruin it, or shitposters calling them out ruins it?
"Communities", yeah.

The best games are made by a single dictator, who then farms out the playtesting to /tg/ but retains total control over the rules and fluff. Otherwise you get someone with good intentions who wants to collate everything to make it "official", which chafes other people because they view the collator as an interloper who came late to the party.

Are zombies just animated skeletons with ablative meat armor?

>>53951223
See
>>53920129

It seems to have the most support as how zombies work in the setting.
>>
>>53918975
Skeletons are fond of insects and the likes in general due to them having their skeleton on the outside.

Sorry mate >>53925856
Skeletons have a weird relationship with bugs.

>I don't like this thing, its not the thing I like!

Yeah, that's exactly the thing I was talking about that causes so many /tg/ projects to collapse.

Sucks that you want to start an argument with me for some reason, but whatever.

I've made a doc for this
You can only comment, but if you want moderator access to approve and directly edit it, ask for it in the doc.

Do you plan on summarizing or just taking posts directly and plopping them into here? Not wondering out of a preference, just wanna know what you're thinking for this doc.
>>
>>53952621
It could technically be both. The skeleton population is huge, and it's even bigger if you expand the setting to include the other planets the skeletons might be going to. Some skeletons might see exoskeletons are terrifying and symbols of abomination, and others might just be happy that the skeleton is on the outside for the world to see.

>/tg/ we need to learn how to get real nuts again.
yes
>We need to make a setting, but not one with some big complex backstory to start out with, no fancy shmancy philosophy. We just need one simple idea and to go wild with it.
YES YES YE-
>We need an overplayed meme as the setting.
Fuck you and everything you stand for, OP.
>>
>>53953527
Sorry you can't enjoy the setting, anon. But if you agree with the sentiment, you can suggest a different simple idea and see what /tg/ can do with it.

I'm lazy as s***, so you just put it in, and I and the moderators approve the comments.
