Can I get a quick rundown on Rifts?

I bought a few books at the local thrift store, and "Vampire Kingdoms" was one of them. I flipped through it and it was pretty much just a bunch of shit about south american vampire lords or somesuch bullshit.

Is Rifts worth getting into?

>>53815302
Rifts is pretty fun if you like absolutely fucking insane 80s brand sci fi fantasy. And don't mind a clunky but somehow charming system.
Rifts is not worth getting into legally, as the company that makes it is run by a dangerously insane man who is also a huge scumbag.

Fun kitchen-sink world with magic, high-tech, psionics, aliens, wizards, mecha, pirates, robots, ninjas, everything under the sun.

Shitty 1980s pastiche rules with a million modifiers.

Worth getting into? Take the setting info and run it in another system.

There's a Savage Rifts version that just came out recently which has much better rules.
>>
>>53815291
>tl;dr world broke into various "zones" that operate under different natural laws and have different histories that, essentially, support a theme or genre of fiction. It's a kitchen sink setting dialed up to 11, a multiverse that lack the budget for "multi" and so squeezes everything into one world, and an excuse to game out weird crossovers. Steal the fluff and apply it to a better system, though. I know there was a SW remake of RIFTS, but I don't know how well-executed it was.
>>
>>53816504
>There's a Savage Rifts version that just came out recently which has much better rules.
Concurred. I've been playing Rifts since it came out in the 90s, and I've been looking for a better system to run it in almost as long. Savage Rifts is a great, smooth version of the game. Pick up the old books for fluff, but use the Savage Worlds version for the mechanics.
>>
>>53816525
You're probably thinking of TORG. Rifts doesn't divide the world up into "zones" or anything. It's just a big patchwork kitchen-sink world of science-fantasy.

>into "zones" or anything. It's just a big patchwork
That's essentially what he said. There aren't explicit zones but all the areas have genres or themes that are very compartmentalized.

>New West is TECHNO-COWBOYS & MAGIC INDIANS!
>Rifts Japan is NIPPONLANDO WITH CYBER-NINJAS!
>Rifts Australia is KANGAROO KOWBOYS & MAGIC ABOS!
>etc.

Basically Kevin & Co. have never come across a geographic cliche they didn't like and want to turn into a bitchin' OCC.

Thank God they didn't touch the mideast or it'd be all like MAGIC MUSLIMS & CYBER-TERRORISTS YO!
>>
>>53816713
But the areas in Rifts don't "operate under different natural laws" or "have different histories." That's a TORG thing.

Does anyone use Rifts or other Palladium games to run tacticool operator games?

I noticed a lot of military/ex-mil guys like Palladium a lot.
>>
>>53815291
>>53816268
I like thinking of Rifts as what you would get if you tried to create a setting where every 80s/90s action figure toyline was canonical.
>>
>>53818594
>Palladium games to run tacticool operator
There's Ninjas & Superspies, which I've heard good things about. It's supposed to have some very well done rules for managing a ninja clan/spy agency.

And being a Palladium game, you can pretty effortlessly drag content from their other games into it without changing a whole lot. A friend of mine says he's been itching to do a S.H.I.E.L.D. game using that and Palladium's superheroes system, but scheduling another game's a real bitch for our group so that's been on the backburner for now.

Funny, I'm working on a Heroes Unlimited thing right now, putting together every random chargen chart (official ones and some select fanmade ones, and making my own for stuff like Bionics and other gear-oriented OCCs) into one big document. One day I'm going to mail it to my players and tell them they have 24 hours to roll up something and bring it to the table.

It's a trainwreck of a system if you try to run it RAW, but by God it has some of the most fun character creation that spews out nothing but back-catalog Legion of Super Heroes members, who are all playable but all insane.
>>
>>53822540
Yes, the randomized chargen is hella fun in Pally games.

Care to share your bionics chart?
>>
>>53815291
>somesuch bullshit
That's an apt description of the entirety of Rifts.
>>
>>
>>53815302
It's pretty great honestly and you don't have to do any of the weird rules porting. The secret to running any palladium game is to make up half of the rules as you go. Don't be afraid to change how things work because the game works best when run at high speed and looking up rules turns the combat in to a bigger drag than it does in any other game.
>>
>>53818594
Yeah you can get some good results if you play palladium. Just restrict OCC's to what would be most appropriate and your game should run great.
>>
Hey, there was a pic of a nice conversion of a SAMAS suit in the last Rifts thread that listed the parts used. Did anybody save that? I'd like to try something similar.
>>
I'm interested in Rifts because it seems to be the only RPG that does mecha. Is the Savage Worlds version good for this?
>>
>>53821592
fuck you, that's dino-riders!
>>
>>53829680
No, the savage worlds version had no idea how to handle any of the hundreds of vehicles in the game so it pretty much just ignored them. Pretty pathetic honestly.
>>
>>53829680
There's a Rifts D20 Modern conversion around somewhere that can handle everything, but then you're playing D20 Modern...

Probably the worst problem with Rifts is that its layout is absolute shit. For example: I was in a Wormwood campaign as a Priest of Light, a class that, among other things, cannot be attacked by a certain enemy (worm zombies). When this came up, I had to look in three different places in the rulebook to find that rule, and the place where it was made the least amount of sense.

This. Rifts is already so unbalanced that it doesn't matter if someone gets the wrong +3 bonus or -1d6 damage penalty to some roll. It doesn't matter. You'll be rolling fistfulls of dice that have no bearing on reality anyway.
>>
>>53831020
That's what happens when you cut-and-paste text blocks for physical press printing rather than using layout software on one of them new-fangled computator thingies that Kevin's heard so much about.
>>
>>53829680
Yes, it is. Don't listen to >>53830590
He's being a fucking idiot. Savage Rifts has had three books come out so far, instead of the dozens of books that Classic Rifts has. You're not going to get the same amount of gear porn, but Savage Rifts has an advantage in that there are actual rules for creating your own mechs and vehicles in the Savage Worlds Sci-Fi Companion.
>>
>>53833115
At least they finally started using computer layout. It only took them until like 2010 or so. Unfortunately, they also discovered Poser at the same time, and a bunch of their covers are shitty half-finished CG instead of decent art.
>>
I tried the same thing about a year about but those books are almost impenetrable
>>
>>53829680
Rifts is weird in that the shitty rules are part of the charm. Savage Worlds has a functional port, but it's like having the monster in a Kaiju movie be CG, yeah it looks better but the crappy costume is part of the genres charm.

Honestly I'd like to run the setting, just start from what's written and work out what would happen logically.

What would happen is the Coalition takes over the world, because they have a bigger airforce than the USA, and thousands of mechs besides.

Oh dude me too nothing kicks up the drama and the action like spending a hot benny right when things start getting intense. Great way to cool off!

I gotta say Savage Rifts is my FAVORITE new game. I'm so glad I supported it, it's essentially the best game I've ever played or read, tons of drama every session. So much drama! I love it. What's your favorite Savage Rifts character guys?

Me too! I love the way Bennies work in Savage Rifts, they really add a ton of unique drama to every session. My favorite Savage Rifts character is definitely the Juicer, having to choose when to use your Bennies and your Juicer Burn really just cranks the drama up to 11 every single session!
>>
>>53839094
I completely agree, the interaction between the multiple awesome Characters in Savage Rifts really gets dramatic when Bennies start flying around the table! Some of my favorite Savage Rifts Characters have made it through a ton of really dramatic and awesome adventures by using Bennies in a really dramatic and awesome way. Savage Rifts is really the best game I've ever played!
>>
>>53839123
I feel like I must have spent a Benny to meet so many other great people who love a good adventure filled with drama! Wow, I didn't know the Savage Rifts community was so active! I'll have to spend another Benny on telling some friends that now's the time to get into Savage Rifts!

You get occasional gold among the dross after Book 3, like Federation of Magic and Wormwood. But for the most part, Rifts books become a slog of gear porn and new classes instead of actual setting information.
>>
>>53844035
I think everyone just needs to accept that RTT is never getting finished, and the only decent things to come out of Palladium for the foreseeable future will be them licensing out their IP to other companies who are better at management and production.
>>
>>53844072
The trolling of the Rifts boardgame was a pretty good product. I don't think anyone was naive enough to think a project with most of the PB fulltimers on board was even remotely coming from an independent company. About the only one not working on it was our good buddy NMI
>>
>>53844124
On the one hand, I really would have liked the Rifts board game to succeed, since I would really like some quality plastic Rifts minis. On the other, with the number of Palladium staffers working on the thing, there was approximately a 0% chance of it not being a clusterfuck.
>>
>>53844053
Australia and Canada had some decent world info.

>>53815291
Post-apocalyptic RPG where holes in time and space opened, and everything poured through. The system is uses the basic system that they used for all their games, with the exception of megadamage. For some things, like mechs, you roll 1d6, and each point equals 100 points, so normals hit go splat. It was somewhat silly with some good ideas, and apparently very lucrative for them, as they released 80 books.
>>
>>53844035

>>53844922
Probably not. The vampires in Rifts aren't really anything like the JoJo vampires, though the Palladium folks like anime enough that it might be a minor one.
>>
In my opinion Rifts goes for the over-the-top post-apocalypse fantasy world with no reservations at all.

And then proceeds to do absolutely nothing interesting with it, just reusing ideas and tropes from other things.

>>
>>53844922
Palladium's writers didn't start directly ripping off jojo's until recent rifters introduced a stand-user O.C.C..
So it's either a happy little coincidence or someone hearing something from somebody else which happened to involve "South american vampires" which made an early writer go "Cool!" without looking more into it.

Because as >>53844972 said, rifts vampire lords are nothing like jojo vampires.
