When a RPG session is advertised as a game as seen the name Role Playing Game, then you would think that players come expecting to have fun and enjoy themselves wouldn't you? Entitled? No, perhaps not. No one is entitled to have fun. You have to earn fun, just like you imply. Rights? Yes, in a way, they do have the right to have fun when they show up to a Game of Role Playing and actively try to enjoy themselves, just as you also have the right to have fun being a dick. They also have the right to throw you out, but that depends on what you are doing and in what game. If the GM is turd, the players may welcome of even link arms with your shitdoings.

Strange that you should try to justify being a dick instead of admitting how cruel you are and sharing your ploys of ruin with us. I've had GMs who put me to sleep, and GMs who actively railroad, so tactfully (or sometimes non-tactfully) messing with the GM can be the only way to make fun occur. Similarly with players. Though my tactic would be to try and humiliate the problematic one in question, but pass it off as a jest in good humour. You can work to correct people's faults that way.

What exactly in the name "roleplaying game" implies characters are entitled to have fun? When you play Monopoly, are you entitled to have fun? I don't do this shit anymore, but once I was at the first session of a DnD game we kept meeting NPCs who would jump in our way and offhandedly mention rumors of a goblin infestation(a few miles from the capital of a HRE style realm, lel).

My character starts trying to get in touch with the authorities to get the king's army to clear it out. And for some reason the rest of the group starts going along with this idea. Eventually we're trying to set up meetings with royal advisors to report that these various lazy officials and military commanders are ignoring the problem.

The DM eventually just stormed away from the table after we went into a bar and started hitting on women there.

Except I still regularly run games for the same group I've been with for 5 years. I am basically a master GM. I'll have you know I've literally been paid, unsolicited, for my DMing. I've been offered almost 200 dollars just to DM a short campaign. My descriptions are unparalleled, I barely even need to prepare for my games anymore, and my players can hardly take the different. I strike the perfect balance between railroad and sandbox, between realism and "rule of cool" bullshit. But I am a tough GM and always keep the players on their toes. Not to mention I am part of the DM community and as such I have a lot of influence in the local RP community. If someone gets on my bad side, all I need to do is send a few text messages, and have them blacklisted from pretty much any roleplaying group within a 35 mile radius.

Just want to piggyback on this thread with a question, would rather post in an existing thread than start my own

To what extent is a party member expected to share his thoughts with the party? From the perspective of a player not wanting to be That Guy. Let's assume for a minute that you aren't evil-aligned, and you aren't planning to betray another party member or sell out to the bad guys. Is keeping secrets inherently a bad thing?

For a couple of examples. Let's say the party has a stereotypical druid who loves nature and trees and shit. The party splits up in town and the fighter learns that some faction wants help securing a powerful artifact that would advance their goals and is willing to pay handsomely. Let's also say that the fighter learns that these goals would bring no harm to any people, but could lead to the destruction of a forest habitat. If he misrepresents the situation when he brings the news to the party, leaves out the possibility of the forest being harmed, so the druid is less likely to object, is his player in the wrong?

Or, let's say a new character joins the party, and in-character there is a lack of trust between him and the other party members that goes both ways. The new guy finds a large sum of money by chance that no one else knows about it. Since he doesn't know how the other party members would react, he keeps it a secret and leaves it in his bag of holding. But whenever the opportunity presents itself for him to cover the cost of an item another party member has their eye on, he does so.

Or, let's say there is a plot point that comes up, like an old adversary from a character's backstory. The party asks what the deal is, and the character explains what happened in his past but decides to leave out potentially embarrassing details. One of the details left out end up being significant later on. So now the party member has to tell the whole story and admit that he was intentionally obfuscating the truth before.

The reason I ask is because I feel that keeping secrets is a normal part of how humans behave. There are things we tell our friends, things we tell our family, and things we tell our coworkers. The people I play with seem to expect to be in the know about every single thing my character knows. I also feel like part of playing a character is in how you choose to share information. If you just regurgitate the speeches NPCs give you every time, or relay every bit of scenery the DM told you about, you're not really playing a character, are you?
