ITT: we use the description of our names to describe who we are supposed to be.

>First Name: The name you are more commonly referred to by is your Face name. Everyone can tell in an instant on what you do/who you are for a living.
>Middle Name: The least known name is your Hidden name, only reserve to those you get to know you. Hidden skills are a commodity to everyone.
>Last Name: This is your Surname, your family trade, and heritage. Every member of your family is brought through this way as a way of life. Whether they keep to it when they get older is up to them.

To worldbuild, every group of five surnames will join as five great families to create their city or nation across the globe. We'll discuss how they affect the each other as more nations arise.

>>
>>53595184
I always like starting with the surname to get a picture on how you grew up and then work on the first and middle names.

You were born into a life of nobles and really grew into the lifestyle. So much so were seen as the prideful Romans of Laurentum, home of the original Latins. But, your high life gets the best of you sometimes, so you like to settle down occasionally and do some homely things that you enjoy like owning and tending to an inn. Your brought up your own inn from the ground up as your pride and joy.

Iunno man.

>>53595309
We found our hero of legend.

I feel like i would be the creator of some kind of religious movement based on revering the Earth. A religion that will probably survive in time.

Taking a crack my City-Nation's description.

Conjoined by a uneasy union between the Tribes Along the Wastes, their struggle to survive was no more as there 50 year long battle for control ended in peace for a fruitful tomorrow. The Sand Shields guarded the mountain for years whilst thriving in their deserts. The Nobles of the Peak are the ancestors of the first combined tribes, a testament of their duty to protect their children in these harsh lands.

A special few of those children became great champions, blessed by the wills of the warriors and survivors to carry on their will to live. They all reside in high cliffside of the Mountain Men's cliffs and mesas overlooking the city at large. Without the natural barriers of their mountains, these people would've died off ages ago. And finally, The Order of Soil. A church, sometimes seen as a sect, of proclaiming the greatness that is the Earth we love on and all It provides for us. With their prayers, they provide miracles to guide the sandstorms away. And with their ire, it's said they can call upon their earth's might, elementals of sand and stone to crush our unseen enemy.

Expanding on the Order of Soil, as i was its maker.

The Order of Soil was founded quite recently, less than a century ago, when the wars began, albeit its roots go much deeper. In fact, revering the Earth was rather common in the Wastes, and had been done for centuries. However, no sort of religious order had ever risen. It was when the wars began and the people feared for themselves that more and more began believing in the Earth's secure stability. It was a wandering monk named Constantius whom had the idea of uniting all these people under a single light, so that their faith, together, would be stronger. And so, the Order of Soil was created. The priests soon discovered that when one places his belief in the Soil, it shall, in turn, grant a gift. And so, the Miracles of Sand were learnt and passed along from priest to priest. When the wars ended, the Order of Soil estabilished a foothold within the capital, and soon began thriving there.

City-Nation 4
A city founded by a band of mercenaries from the far away kingdom of Bourdic. This nation has a vast iron industry and flagstone is the most commonly used building material. The ruling house of this nation has a distinctive birthmark that every member has even those bastards the king forgot about. I'm thinking this city has had a fair amount of bloody succession wars since it's creation
>>
>>53601608

I don't know. Maybe the M.I.O.F.B (Have to find a better name) allows their soldiers to act as soldiers of fortune on their own free time, so long as they don't go against their country or it's interests. The ruling king probably has his own men, maybe like the Byzantine Empire. The king/emperor hires foreign mercenaries as personal bodyguards because they're more trust worthy then their own men which any bastard/sister/brother/mother/fifth cousin could bribe with enough gold, women, drugs, and prestige.

Ok, City-nation 4, or shall be known as Miofb for the moment to make things easier. I'm going to try to flesh it out a bit more, so get rid of anything you don't like.

The City Miofb was founded by the Blackwood, a very large, but disgraced, mercenary company that originated from the kingdom Bourdic. No one truly knows what caused the Blackwood to become disgraced and forced the whole company to leave the kingdom, but some sages believe the founding father Jorm Blackwood killed his employer, the king of Bourdic, in a fit of rage when the king insulted his homely wife. Miofb was founded near by a rocky coastline, filled with grassy plains and hills, and small mountains. The mountains are filled with iron, making the city of Miofb the greatest iron supplier in the area. The majortiy of the buildings in Miofb are made with flagstone, a tradition that was brought with them from the kingdom of Bourdic. The Miofb are a fairly aggressive and militaristic nation, but thankfully for surrounding nations, their aggression is mostly turn inward with bloody successions wars since the last king couldn't keep his dick in his pants. However, Miofb has been known to allow it's soldiers be used by other nations for their wars, for a price of course. Sometimes the price is gold and jewels, sometimes the price is the hand of a daughter or son, and sometimes the price is a favor.

Never owe a favor to a Miofbnesse. Never.

Why not? Of course, those tunnels weren't dug too close or into main cities, that'd be an issue. The trade outposts with the tunnels are foci of military power as well, to deal with the risk of ambush

>>
>>53602918
Lowlands have slower, warmer waters. Combine this with the beast mastery and the tunnels suggest the area is difficult and dangerous to navigate above ground. So lets say it's a jungle. The jungle is known as The Snarls, the cavern system is known as The Winding Paths. Invading forces know them as the Twisting Catacombs, for self explanatory reasons. Not sure on a name for the nation yet though.
>>
>>53603015
Oh yea, i like that. Maybe a kind of town wide mission to keep him coiled in the spring probably through our faith since a lot of us have holy connections.
>>
>>53603015
Well first and middle names only represent the individual, not the nation at large. The challenge here is to create a place with only the 5 last names shared, none of the first.

But as long as you guys have fun I guess it doesn't matter so much. Maybe the Full Names we present are the founders of the City-Nations and they present some of their own Individual Influence? That could be neat too.

I would want to say WR with a splash of B for Miofb, but I can also somewhat seem them as RB with a splash of W for order, since I'm seeing them as an ambitious and passionate sort. Badgers are creatures of foul temper and nigh unstoppable fury.

Son of Jack being hidden perhaps means you're secretly a bastard. Or perhaps instead if we translate "Jack" to "Man", you would be "Son of Man", so perhaps you're secretly a Half-Breed, which may make the Badger bit a tad more literal. Maybe you're actually a Werebadger?

Working name for our city-state: Sanctus Tal
We are a nation with a monotheistic leadership and a polytheistic working class that is still making the transition to a single god. The two God families make up the central leadership, since they are the ones chosen by God. The learned one family, being the smart ones, act as bureaucrats and scholars. The military is lead by the unknown battle family, them being a group of former warrior nomads who settled and intergrated into the normal populace. The bent grass family are druids who believe their nature powers come from the monotheistic God. They serve as magic units in the army, apothecarie, and mediators between the elites and the still nature worshipping general population.

Can I get an update on all the city-nations that have been created and can I also get an idea on how the other city-nations see each other? I'm the guy that was working on Miofb, but I've got no idea how to flesh my city out, so I'm hoping that hearing more about your cities will help me. Thank you.

Of the named ones, we have D'Gensib, Fobes, Miofb, Nascolind, Sanctus Tal.

Son of Hugh here. Fobes seems to be the kind of people you trade to get exotic animals or their furs/bones/meats as well as jungle fruit. They're probably seen as a little creepy what with the constant animal companions and fascination with fear. I can see uneasy peace being held with bordering nations, tolerating them more so they don't have to deal with the Twisting Catacombs and Snares. Basically the reason in TES why the Empire made a treaty with Black Marsh

Yup, this is what I get for having a middle- lastname combo that implies I'm my own son Jakob Jakobsson. Honestly at a loss for words at what this would imply. A young, up-and-coming entrepreneur seeking to overthrow his fathers business, much like he had done to his father before him? Before you ask, yes. It is a trend among the men of my extended family to have those two as well.

So in what CN does a jackass like me belong? Miofb?

The Mountainhold of Kar Annis
A small but rich city-state, perched on the slopes of the Annis Ara trio - three tall mountains spires jumbled together.
The three-limbed valley slopes are forested, and much of the city's food comes from there - hardy hunters spend their time tracking game to bring back to the city proper, their enduring stubborness the city's lifeline.

Once, the city was known for its great mines, though in the last centuries they have dried up and been emptied. However, the city endured, building itself a new name on the backs of its traders.
A knack for brokering metal trades became a knack for brokering peace deals, and the great university was founded, carved into the peaks.
Kingdoms the world over clamour for the men and women of this great school, for everything from border drawing disputes to peace talks to drafting war declarations.
Owning a diplomat from Kar Annis is a fine boast in many courts.

The city is defended well enough by its placement - the mountains mean no large force can ever advance unseen and unassailed and the city's food stores run deep inside the rock, more than enough to outlast an invader. Kar Annis does, however, have a small and fierce standing army.
Only the most ceremonial of positions in the Stone Soldiers actually has the ancient traditional granite buckler as part of its uniform - most of the force simply use metal - but the legend of 'the men who have shields and hearts of stone' has done much to bolster the city's reputation of impregnability.

However, the city's storied reputation hides a dark secret.
Perhaps the thinner air does strange things to some men's minds.
Perhaps some men simply cannot cope in an enclosed city perched atop the world.
Perhaps a dozen other things, not yet considered by the learned men and wise women, are what rots away at the heart of Kar Annis.
But, regardless of reason, there is a stark truth; in the mountains, madness runs on swift feet.

Based on the City-Nations we've seen so far, only a few of them belong on continents based on the geography, mainly my fucking desert. Other than that, the majority of nations that do make sense could be neighbors.

I think the plan so far will be to have the nations neighbor each other based on number order unless their geography doesn't coincide with them, ie: deserts next to jungles or islands next to tundras.

The Wolfheart Tribes of the Windstorm Valley, a loose confederation of tribes that formerly were made of raiders. The Windstorm Valley is crossed by a large river, which flows from the freezing peaks of the Deathsnow mountains – at the edge of civilization, the tribes are the monster’s first target, and obligatory passage.

Normally this would lead to groups that really like to defend themselves, but not the tribes. Fierce raiders, imbued with a religion on the virtues of strength, courage and leadership, they started pushing further and further up the valley, fighting monsters every day. They believe that they’re the people chosen to protect the civilized folks from their dreaded foes, and thus push harder and harder, fiercer and fiercer, faster and faster, every day until the monsters retreat. In a way, it’s a bit like giving the fiends a taste of their own medicine.

The tribes are mostly self-contained within the area they claim as their own – big city-states would only lead to disaster, even when claiming large amounts of unpopulated land under their protection. However, there is one center where they meet. The councils are hosted there, with the most capable leaders of the five tribes deciding amongst themselves the future foreign policy of the tribes, from signing alliances with peoples further South to the strategic impact of their raids into enemy territory.

In addition, upon returning from every raid, there is a celebration amongst all tribes, with plenty of singing and drinking, commemorating the glorious tales of heroes past – and current, too. These can last for an entire week, impressively enough.

The tribes call themselves Wolfheart because of the first great hero of the Windstorm Valley, Lars Wolfheart. When asked the meaning of the name, they claim it is “wolves can act independently and be very dangerous – a wolf pack is far, far more dangerous because they have a leader. We are as wolves. Evil is our prey.”

>And these vital trade routes are the main reason for its meteoric rise to power.

Landlocked, yes, but surrounded by mountains, a la Afghanistan. It's hard to pierce due to its mountainous terrain, but said mountains allow for a large amount of trade to be forced into the long valley. There, the heartlands are fertile, the people are rural, there isn't much industry to speak of, but there is a large military presence and a high amount of infrastructure. A merchant would tie his horse to the side of the road, and go to sleep under the night sky. When he wakes up, the horse and all his belongings will remain.

Not that one has to sleep on bare ground, as the region is also famous for the way taverns and villages line the main road.

The House of Learned had a devoted their considerable intellect to propelling Sanctus Tal into greater victory and dominion in the name of our Great Tal. They employed a system of spies and information networks which brought to them the latest news and happenings within the nation.

When Sanctus Tal encountered another community the House of Learned would send their tendrils into the foreign populous and quietly learn of their beliefs their classes and resources, any valuable information and knowledge was taken to the library and transcribed.

Of course if the foreign body proved resistant to the solicitations from the preachers of the God Market, information on how to dismantle and invade and incorporate those left after the carnage is given directly to the exalted Warrior Born.

>>53603273
The ruling class of Sanctus Tal are those who are born of the House barring the closest resemblance to god. These 'Tal'est are the paradigm of what all in the nation aspire to be, strength, and divine beauty among the traits. Some of the lesser tribes and communities brought into the fold worship the Tal'est as gods in their own right, and those of the Veil of Grasses tolerate such heresies, as the transition to the religion of Tal from a polytheistic religion takes time, gently reminding that the Tal'est only represent Tal in the mortal world.

The power the Veil of Grasses wield is revered with the more established of Sanctum Tal, its healing and offensive magic is honored by Warrior Born, and those integrated into society still remember the gentle lifting of the veil and parting of the grass which showed the true light of Tal to them.

Preachers of the God Market want to share the greatness of Tal it is not mandatory to live within the realm, many religions are tolerated and kept peaceful at the God Market. Of course that is after they have submitted to the military might of the Sanctum and various taxation and mandatory tributes..

Maybe apart from the main city-forts were most of the population lives there are also small forts of like 20 people pushing further and further into the wilderness, more like colonial outposts than actual cities, run under martial law by a veteran warrior.
Most citizens have military and survivalist trainning and as a rite of initiations to maturity, every citizen must spend a year at an advanced outpost and bring back a trophe. Those that do refuse to go or don t collect a trophe are seen as weaklings and second class citizens and delegated the lowest tasks (cleaning septic pits, washing floors etc)
They are a very superstitious people, and while they mainly belive in a organised religion they are extremely in touch with shamanistic practices

One of you, a group of soldiers and warriors they except recruits only you must oass series of tests/undergo hardships, something like this. From the lowlands, are the assassins/secret service of the twisting catacombs? All familys are helped by an ancient breed of their own tasked to the bennifit of the needs of its master. This was one of the gifts of the beastcharmers on founding date(someone from fobes help out here)
>>

The Sons of Hugh are priests, healers, and scholars. The religion as referenced >>53604751
is about overcoming fear and embracing the world for what it is. Their teachings better allow those who learn them to navigate the Twisting Catacombs, which are still not fully mapped. They are gifted with an owl as their beast.

The ruling class of Fobes is a council of the 5 major families, each managing the city in their own way while staving off whatever lurks within the jungle and beneath the surface.

I believe that beast charmer has gigantic roosters >>53602353 or basically chocobo to help them hunt and capture prey. Don't know about the other houses

The nobles are also monsters, naturally. Mainly vampires, but other, more powerful monsters too. They're great strategists and not only use their military strength but also their cunning diplomacy to never be faced with the many foes that want to destroy them. When not sowing the seeds of despair, discord and destruction, they live a life of debauchery, lust and degeneracy.
