The gorget is a great looking and practical piece of armor. If your chest plate resists an enemy projectile weapon, chances are the projectile is flying apart. The gorget prevents fragments from flying into the weak knock join.

I just wish they had squatted the old marine models entirely. So some grognards will be upset for a short while. Long-term implications of Primaris Marines look grim.

Still have no idea what I'm going to even paint them up as, since I'm not really into starting a new army right now. As the sexy new Custodes are what brought me back to 40K a few months ago, and still need to buy over half the army and Inferno.


Current ideas are either 1 of each for the Imperial Fists and their successors (was going to do Celestial Lions, but I'm already making an army that's entirely gold). Especially if I can get a lot of swords together, so I can do a "Feast of Blades" gathering.

Primaris use their own patterns. Auto Bolter just seems like a Storm Bolter equivalent. Bolt Rifles are just up-sized Bolters, so they probably have extra range. Assault Bolters are miniaturized Heavy Bolter SMGs.

The classic Bolters are still used by everyone else since Primaris are too big.

No. Vaguest rumors say regular SM will have an updated box, although I have no source for that and they seem to have gotten one recently already.

Fluff says Primaris (and associated equipment) are a new type secretly created on Mars to help bolster the Space Marines. They're getting doled out to existing Chapters as reinforcements or made into new Chapters wholecloth. For the foreseeable future (of maybe four years or so until 9e) OG Space Marines are here to stay. If they do get all changed into Primaris, it's likely to be a gradual phasing out rather than a total squat.

Originally it was a setting and models without a ruleset, intended to be a for a system along the lines of WFRP. Even well into the development of 40k as we know it now, after the release of the 40k rulebook, it was still way closer to what we'd think of as an RPG system than our modern wargame. There was a lot of room for homebrew, and kitting out your units was more like designing your D&D character than a modern squad. Look at the original dreadnaught rules, since you said you're interested in the development of the franchise. White Dwarf 100 has four pages of material for how to stat and equip a dread. It's so detailed and in depth it's probably more complicated alone than whatever 8th is gonna be.

I'm not saying that's better, or anything, but it definitely used to be more of a setting for your imagination to run wild in, compared to the narrative universe we have today.

I have a few issues with these marines.

1. No beakie helmets, the gorget will get in the way.
2. It's a bit over-designed, the finds on the kneecaps would just annoy people in real life as they would stop you kneeling properly and would just get snagged. The control panels on the arms are also a bit unnecessary.
3. I really don't like the flying guys but since they're a new scale none of the old stuff will fit so you're a bit stuck with them. I guess you could put some old jump packs on them but they probably wouldn't look right.
