Why do some people put such little investment into their characters?

Why do some people put such little investment into their characters? I hear all the time about players putting dick all effort into traits or a backstory or anything like that so they're just playing a bunch of numbers on a page. What's even the point? Is it just people who like the idea of playing tabletop more than playing the game itself? Unless you're very new or playing a very high lethality game your character should at least have a paragraph or so about where they came from, what led them to the party and how they generally act.

Why are people like this /tg/?

People speak about the best and the bad.
Lukewarm and goodish characters and experiences aren't commented or talked about because no one would care.

I guess it's the same reason there are so many that guy threads and no this guy threads.

The only times I've seen players put so little investment into their characters were all games where the PCs kept getting killed. Which makes sense, getting invested only makes it worse when the PC gets killed. I'd do the same, which is why I avoid high lethality games.

This.

It's why you rarely see 3 star reviews. 1 star because the service FUCKING SUCKED, 5 star because this place is great and I go there a lot and want them to stay open. 2 if they sucked but I feel a little bad giving a 1 so I soften it. 4 if they're pretty great but I have one issue.

Who the fuck reviews a 3 star place? You just don't go back.

I find that overthinking it before the character really comes to life at the table is mostly a waste. I used to write a lot of stuff for a character starting out, but then I'd find I wrote a different character than I ended up playing. Your backstory is there to give the GM plotstrings to tug on from time to time, and should be kept pretty loose.

"Its just a game lol, chillax"

They're afraid of dying in the first session. In order for an in-depth character, there needs to be a bit of an unspoken agreement between the GM and player that he won't murder the fucking Christ out of your character. Likewise, you'll attempt to fit into his setting and find NPC's to invest yourself into

Is he a big guy?

Speaking from personal experience I got into tabletop for the allure of an RPG that was not constrained by programming. I had no interest in roleplaying.

That said I still built 1k or less word backstories that affected how that character reacted to events because I don't want to be an asshole to the other players by not giving effort. Laziness is most likely the main source combined with the former.

because i see the character as a person that does only need about 5 to 10 lines to give a general idea about him/herself, everything else will be decided during roleplay.
something like 2 lines of background, then 4 lines of the most important personality points and 2 lines of appearance is what i usually write.
the other group members write about 3 pages of description, but the roleplayed character always turned out to be far less than that.

To them, a character is a block of stats to control.
