On the other hand, there is shit like this. That and giant dragon flies that would probably try and eat you alive. So that meteor probably did us a favour.

I mean c'mon. You're on (what I assume is) an island nation. Chances are you're producing enough sugar cane for at least 2-3 distilleries per person.

Also, rum being incredibly flammable, they're probably the ones in trouble if they set it on fire.

Why does the mermaid have a butt? not an anus, but an actual buttocks?
>>

Weren't the dragonflies only possible because the atmosphere had a lot more oxygen in it back then? Something about fungi which could rot down wood properly hadn't evolved yet?

The meteor wasn't even the worst (Best) mass extinction
The best one was the great dying, which took place ~256 MYA and killed somewhere around 90% of ALL life on the planet. The best part is we have more or less no clue how it happened.

>>
>>53332298
The first planet wide extinction killed all life on the planet turning it from a carbon based atmosphere to a oxygen one. To be fair there was only one life form on the planet and it stretched across the entire world.

It was an ocean fungus.

>It was definitely an oxygen rich environment. That and since insects were the first animals on land they could afford to be big before amphibians came along.

I had a pastor that believed this was also how dinosaurs became a thing, since the oxygen-rich environment would let lizards grow much larger as well.
>>
>>53332509
The actual reason is because the common ancestors of dinosaus was part of the 10% of animals that lived through the great dying, and the globe was warmer then so it was easier for reptiles to get big
Also: Birds are reptiles

Oh, that gear is clearly traded (or, plausibly, stolen), perhaps in exchange for the rock sluts and fringed anuses they're stealing. Actual shark folk-art (or sharkfolk art?) is much less elaborate, being primarily made using coral, worked into shapes using tooth-sawing and skin-sanding techniques that gives it a smooth, organic look.

Shark folk have tremendous upper body strength and their powerful electroreception and sense of smell, even outside of the water, mean they can track their enemies down and subdue them hand-to-hand, without having to rely on short range melee weapons. At longer range, of course, sharkfolk can make spears of wood with tooth spearheads

There's rumours that the reason the forums were taken down and rebooted was because apparently Fen slept with a female member of the forums at one of the conventions he attended, then started to blackmail her for more sex and for her to keep the whole thing a secret from his wife. Eventually the girl dumped all the evidence in the forums before they were nuked, which is why the forums were reset and people lost their accounts and everything uploaded to the server.

Massive volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia is the leading candidate. Although there's conflicting evidence whether the extincion was caused by a "nuclear winter" type scenario where massive amounts of volcanic ash blocked the sun and caused a sudden short-lived ice age, or due to greenhouse gasses released by the volcanism completely fucking up the climate.
In fact, practically every mass extincion seems to be tied to a large igneous province. Even the K/T one. The asteroid impact is what gave the killing blow, but dinosaurs had been getting fucked over by volcanism long before that. Which one was actually the cause of the extincion is up to debate, though (i.e. would they have survived just the volcanism without the asteroid impact, or would they have died off anyway and the asteroid just provided a faster and more dramatic end).

On a side note, if there's any place in the world that's bound to be cursed by something horrible, it's Norilsk area in Siberia. Site of a massive nickel orebody (with considerable amounts of platinium as accessory) created by the flood basalt eruption (in fact, the creation of the orebody is likely a direct product of event that lead to the end-Permian mass extincion), later used a prison camp by the Soviets where thousands of prisoners were worked to death in inhospitable conditions (it's one of the coldest places in Siberia, especially when you taken in the account the near constant wind from the arctic sea). These days the leading cause of death for people living there is suicide or alcoholism (although to be honest that's the case in most of Russia). The place is also extremely polluted due to very lax adherence to any environmental laws, so if you don't die from suicidal depression you probably get cancer or something.

>Aim low, miss low.

The British Army during the Napoleonic Wars noticed a tendancy for soldiers to overestimate how high they were aiming due to the nature of the human eye and the lack of sights on firearms of the time.

They discovered that when ordered to aim at the torso of the enemy, the vast majority of shots actually struck a foot or so above the 'enemy's' heads, accounting for the often unexplainable lack of lethality infantry companies demonstrated during battle.

So the taught doctrine during this period was for British infantrymen to compensate for this by aiming low, at the enemy's knees or groin, thus producing a larger number of lethal upper torso hits. Sergeants and officers would remind their men of this prior to ordering volleys.

This mean the British infantry were significantly more lethal even than troops with superior discipline and drill, such as Prussians, but who didn't train with live ammunition and notice this discrepancy.

t. Man who has read all the Sharpe books.

If you know legit Marine Biology, maybe you can help. Is "ovaries" the right term for >>53338909? The angle I'm going for is that they're swollen and engorged, partially to maintain proper temperature for fertilization and implantation, but mostly as a mating display.

One of my favourite books growing up was 'A Natural History of the Unnatural World'.

Basically a fake natural history log book, documenting modern expeditions to encounter all sorts of animals from ancient myth, from Thunder Birds in the USA to Kelpies in Scotland, with accounts from the explorers/mocked up photographs.

Everything was written as though the creatures were real and being studied by biologists, which I really liked because usually there's this divide between Science! and Magic!

I always like playing character's whose motivation for adventuring is to collect and study species, like a fantasy Darwin on the HMS Beagle.

I'm not actually a marine biologist (or a biologist, for that matter; I'm a geologist and engineering student, with longstanding interest in paleontology and marine biology). But that doesn't sound very mammal-like to me. I'm not entirely sure if ovaries are the correct term (avaries are where egg cells develop, but I'm not entirely sure if fish eggs remain in the ovaries or are the moved somewhere else in the body before being laid), but fish that do lay eggs do sometimes exhibit visual change when they're carrying eggs ready to be laid (usually swollen abdomen from holding all the eggs, sometimes together with colour change to serve as a mating display). Most fish have external fertilization, so the female lays ufertilized eggs and the male ejeculates on them.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm pretty sure this picture contains one of the best images of a gulper eel skull on the internet. Which says less about my artistic skills (which are nonexistent) and more about how really fucking hard it was to find a reference picture. The best I found was a blurry scan from some marine biology textbook, which I tried to reproduce as closely as I could.

Right, so. How does a strictly marine, not coastal, civilization come about? Because I'm not happy with dude-armed fish in my setting which have achieved sweet stuff like grand architecture and metalworking just for the sake of repeating the archetype. For starters, I'd say ability to communicate and to use tools are required.

Gesturing is probably the first choice when you think of communicating underwater but there are a lot more ways to go about it as well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensory_systems_in_fish

But as far as tools go, live examples are mostly limited to spitting sand or water, moving rocks to cover something or as an anvil to bash some tough crustacean against it.
>>
>>53339533
Problem is rust and no fire. If you can solve those problems (usually with magic/unobtainium) the civilizations become a lot more feasible.

Copper and brass are also quite resistant to corrosion, I think. Few susbtances are entirely corrosion-proof, but plenty of metals are less susceptible than iron (which, aside from a few exceptions, does not occur in native form in surface conditions because it is so prone to oxidation).

This is somewhat off topic, but how large is a shark man's penis?
>>
>>53330382
First, we're going to make them fight us on our own turf. We'll hold a big party on the beach where we burn effigies of sharkmen and dump chum on the ground. When this draws them out, the ballistae teams we have hidden in the jungle will move out of hiding and harpoon the bastards and reel them in like the fish they are. Then we fill them with arrows and wait for them to die. Then we feast on their fins and display their corpses as a warning to the survivors.

Of course we're going after those the next day with fishing spears and helms of water breathing.

C. megalodon at least is theorized to have hunted by ramming its prey from below to stun or even kill it. Prehistoric "killer spermwhales" may also have hunted whales in the same way (spermwhales are quite interesting creatures in being highly derived form of large apex predator whale that survived while most of their relatives died out due to their specialized diet; also they've got the whole organic sonic cannon thing going on). Killing big things by ramming them seems to be a generally a good hunting strategy, as Cretaceous mosasaurs also apparently did the same thing (the tip of a mosasaur's skull is solid bone which according to skin impression was covered with large thick scales, allowing it to function like a natural equivalent of a ramming prow of ancient ships)
>>
>>53351503
Please explain the sonic cannon.
>>
>>53351538
The name "spermwhale" is actually short for "spermaceti whale", spermaceti being the name for a vaxy liquid held in an organ in the whale's head (which is why the whale has such a huge blocky head; the skull is not that different from other toothed whales, but there's a huge mass of soft tissue over the upper jaw). Said organ is locaded directly behind the phonic lips (the organ toothed whales use to create sound pulse for echolocation), and is theorized to form a part of a complex apparatus that acts like a lense for sound waves. Sound pulses from the photic lips pass through the spermaceti organ (which conducts sound far better than water), then bounce back through the melon. The pulse can be focused into a tight beam of extremely loud sound, which the whale can use to stun or kill its prey.
Spermwhales are the loudest animals on Earth, capable of producing sounds as loud as a jet engine, and being caught directly in the path of ones sonic death beam would instantly kill a human diver by rupturing their internal organs from the force of the sound.

As far as I know, they don't, but I might be wrong. Male sharks have claspers, which are modified anal fins used to hold onto female during mating, but I don't think they have a penis as such. Fish generally don't have a penis, although some have modified fins that fulfill the same function.

Them being actual marine mammals does make more sense than having a mammalian upper body glued onto a fish tail.
I prefer mermaids to either have more dolphin-like lower bodies or be more fishy all over, rather than half and half. Looks better.
>>
>>53357388

Imagine humanoid whale people would look like? Their heads would be massive if you had ones like sperm whales swimming around with their giant arms dangingly along side them.

More importantly, none of that shit would last long under water.

For an orc replacement you just need any race of physically intimidating, violent, belligerent, savages. That's why G.W. based them on football hooligans

So in answer to your question; yes, they could easily be shark-men if you want.
>>

That seems like far too small a tank for the subject contained within it. will no doubt cause health problems and early expiration.

Mermaids are not fish, they are like dolphins.

That means the females have pussies that grip so tight they will strip the skin off your dick, while mermen penises are prehensile and fire off like shotguns.

They find it easier than hunting sea harlots and catching their own starfish.

Also they just found the rum distillery, tasted it, one died, they now think its evil.

Really its just a buncha underwater savages being underwater savages.
>>
>>53330945
Can't purge them in their own enviroment.

Especially if they are smart. The deus cucks is hard to do if you can barely swing your sword and they can move around better than on land.
>>
>>53339533
They would either be very primitive, tough it would work- Metalurgy or stonemasonry is not the end all of an empire and many has risen up in the world without even inventing the wheel. What really is needed is a stable culture and fair laws.

Unless they are amphibious or living in air filled caves they would mostly live in motley stone huts or less generally just close to each other enough to ward of animals. Trading with other large "schools" of people for things from their part of the sea.

>>
>>53364078
Okay, but how?

You can't do a direct attack because its their invincible fortress and natural enviroment and you can't just salt the earth because the sea is big and they can just fuck off.

How do we deal with the sharkmen threat everyone? In revenge of our rum.
>>
>>53364119
Do what some anon did in another thread. Open portals to the netherhells under the ocean. Drain the fucking sees into the fiery abyss!
>>
>>53364154
But WE also need the oceans, for seafaring and food.
>>
>>53347367
So is wanting a muscular sharkwomen to crush me with her thighs and eat my corpse, but here we are...
>>
>>53364174
Nah
>>
>>53364174
Yep. That's why the anon said they opened other portals into the elemental plain of water. Oh and because daemonic sea life was popping up they briefly routed the water through heaven because it somehow made it holy.

I'm personally not 100% convinced of the mechanics because, for instance, a church is certainly holy ground but that doesn't mean the toilets and drinking fountains are filled with holy water but yeah, sure, osmotically obtained holiness added to the water.

There were two forms of life. It was the ones that excreted oxygen as a waste product that "poisoned" the planet and killed off the competition.
>>
>>53364212
I mean, the portal to the plane of water wont exactly suck or shit out water, even if it did let it trough thanks to the internal pressure of it.

All it would most likely do is create a really weird looking vortex.

Meanwhile the fishmen are being underwater vikings and raiding your other coastal villages. THEY CANNOT BE STOPPED!
>>
>>53364174
No, see, because you have portals you just open up into a dimension with really decent sales on seafood. Also check out OP's pic again. That fucker clearly isn't very nomadic. How far could he make it with those stubby little legs? Clearly these are local boys who are tired of your whoring and drunkenness thus they attacked the local rum and beach whore industries. This means you merely need to ascertain their location so you can surgically strike with hell portals. No need to wipe out the entire ocean, you fucking psycho, only, say, 2% max just to be sure. Maybe five if feeling particularly vindictive.
>>
>>53332509
This actually isn't a terrible bit of logic, though the two things are probably unrelated.

Lower oxygen level is, however, why we don't have dragonflies the size of birds anymore. That's probably for the best.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meganeura
>>
>>53364288
>you can surgically strike with hell portals
Well good job fucko, now you got sharkmen and DEVIL sharkmen raiding your coasts.

Wizards, no sense of right or wrong.
>>
>>53364267
Do not trust this poster. He is clearly an agent of the shark people.

Sharks are far more sensitive to light than humans, so without the ocean to filter they're going to have some problems with glare during daytime raids. The kingdom will merely dress it's strongest warriors in bikinis and wigs and have they prance around giggling to lure the shark warriors in, then it's party time!
>>
>>53364333
You missed the part about dumping massive amounts of holy water into the ocean to keep levels topped off.
>>
>>53364327
Kind of off-topic, but I always wondered whether some of the animals back then (or even before) ever had civilizations or tool use. I mean, we can probably deduce from the evolutionary record that it didn't happen, but there's some huge spans of time that are low on data. Plus, we would never know they were there if their ruins had completely decayed.
>>
>>53364267
>the portal to the plane of water wont exactly suck or shit out water,
You clearly aren't using the right portal, matey.
>>
>>53338995
This is very confusing to me, though I've only ever fired ranch guns with iron sights. I always learned to aim slightly above whatever I was firing at, to accommodate the round dropping.

What is it about muskets that caused this behavior?
>>
>>53364353
Well it could work if not for one big stick in the cogs.

The church would come by and be all "oh this is a holy site now." and then you can't go there without hearing the preaching and you know that a sailor wont exactly abide by the church rules.

Also dilution, I don't think holy water has the viscosity to remain seperate or even sink fast enough to not be diluted by the hellportals EVIL water.
>>
>>53364384
It's probably just bullshit.

>British soldiers in X were the best at Y because (some convoluted explanation over several paragraphs).
>>
>>53364340
If we're doing fun with portals at the moment, there's always the joys of the bag of holding. Land mines that when stepped on shove a tube with the rolled up portable hole into the opening of the bag of holding. When done send in the peasants to fill in the resulting holes in the beach and have them walk around a bit to make sure there aren't an unaccounted for mines.

Or if their eyesight sucks, sure, mockup beach babes that when grabbed trigger the same thing. Drop the fuckers in the astral plane.

Tool use is hardly unlikely since we're finding out it is actually pretty damn common. Whether or not they got up to building Atlantis, well, yeah, that's unlikely. Dinosaurs with tools? Why not. Dinosaurs with dwellings? Possible, I suppose, but at 65,000,000+ years they're extremely unlikely to find any significant evidence. Evidence from humans is lucky to have lasted over 10,000. Nothing would last on the surface. We're lucky what little has lasted as-is and the fossil record is woefully incomplete.

The mezopotamians managed to make an empire without the wheel and the chinese invented gunpowder but didn't have guns. The romans had fucking concrete for gods sake.

Technology is not a straight line. There has most likely been societies in the past with certain technology that died out and lost the info.

>>53364119
Nets. We'll just use their instincts against them.
>>
>>53364578
True, but those were all very modern human civilizations.
>>53364353 was wondering if there were extinct(?), intelligent animals that had developed civilization and advanced tool use.
>>
>>53364616
We would've found their remains with their technology. An entire race does not just die without their things, archeology has proven that.

But sure, its possible. Its also possible we are the only intelligent life in the universe (intelligent in human standards.)
>>
>>53364353
>ancient earth life
>developing civilization and tools

This has always been my favorite theory about the Greys/Reptilian aliens; they are, in fact, highly-evolved natives of Earth. Plausible deniability when government officials say that there are no extraterrestrials.

(As for what they have been doing for the last couple of dozen million years, and why they allowed mammals to infest the planet, no idea.)

It made for a fun episode of Voyager.
>>
>>53364384
>What is it about muskets that caused this behavior?
A lack of ballistic understanding/general knowledge.
Fire arms are a relatively new technology, as is general education. Back when muskets were cutting edge tech most people couldn't even read, and many suffered from iodine deficiency, which lowers the IQ by a significant amount.
>>
>>53364413
You open the portals at the top of Hell, so the water flows OUT of the ocean, and is sort of a waterfall of seawater into hell. Did you miss that part?
>>
>>53364717
Well then we're back to the fact that we got a sinkhole into hell and if dwarf fortress taught me anything its that it usually spells the doom for the entire place.

Also that you got a big sinkhole into hell, you know the whole area is gonna be dried up and you'll lose all those treasures of the seas.
>>
>>53364687
Actually, I was referring to the behavior of the muskets, my bad. It sounds like the recoil was imparted before the round left the barrel.
>>
>>53364769
Or by draining the oceans you've rendered those treasures accessible without extreme magicks to survive underwater at crushdepth.

Besides, how badly do you want these shark bastards dead? They FUCKED WITH OUR RUM.
>>
>>53364848
I dunno man, rum is good an all but satan is kinda not worth the trouble. We got the backup grog after all.
>>
>>53364413
That's why you research one-way portals, baby. Gotta think this shit through before you post.

The real problem is what to do when angelic, demonic, and elemental ambassadors show up wanting to know who is violating the fuck out of their sovereign planar borders. The key at this point is to blame the sharks. After all, just look what they did to your innocent distillery and rather less innocent beach babes! Clearly this is some ne'er do well seafood. Oh and also you need to keep an eye on your fellow co-conspirators because if it looks like they might flip on you you have to have another portal preferably to an undead realm because you don't want this fucker to die since if his soul reaches heaven or hell he'll just rat you out.
>>
>>53352179
>Those horrid little fairies scared me as a kid. Moreso than the gigantic monster shark. Weird.
That's because they evolved from people.
>>
>>53364876
Oh fine, you big pussy, then use an elemental plane of fire.

It's clear you don't deserve rum or beach-harlots, though, so you don't get to participate when we rebuild.
>>
>>53364931
If we go this freestyle then the sharks would simply go and stealthily make it look like you were the ones to voilet the NAP making hell send their tactical mall nukes to your suburban rum and child sex slave facilities. Voilating the NAP making you counterattack with your drugged up researched magic fireball children to start a war (whoops can't write that on my anarchist unfunded site.) against hell leading to your free demice and further and continuous violation of everyones NAP
