I made a thread like this a few months ago and I think it'd be nice to have one again. If you put your heart and soul into something, I believe it'll have some merit, Whats the best thing about that setting you've been working on /tg/? Cool mythology? unique races? banking systems? Whats the one thing you can take away from your setting and say "this is balla as fuck!"

Been working on a crusader state sort of setting. Basically demons invaded and pushed several races off of one landmass and now they're trying to reclaim it.

The old noble families want their land back, the various mage orders are after their old towers and libraries they had to abandon, the church is doing their thing, and the people caught in the middle, who've been ruled by the demons for the better part of a century or two, just want to be left alone by the dickish noblemen.

Good times all around. Oh yeah, and the demons are trying to win some of the less enthusiastic members of the crusade over to their side. Still working on the finer details.

crusades are always pretty cool. I've been working on a setting involving aliens stranded on a sword and sorcery planet. still needs lots of work aside from reference photos and chicken scratches on microsoft word

I think I've found out the way to mix modern technology and fantasy adventure:

Removing capitalism.

Let me explain: Modern technology hampers adventure in the sense that we perceive the earth as a cloned city, over and over: the same houses where people work in the same offices and factories, all the cool places are now asphalted, all the wonders have been discovered, poisoned and taxed.

But if you put technology serving the interests of a single, benevolent dictator; there will only be the exact amount of technology that he deems necesary to the wellbeing of the peoples. Some inventors can hack government-approved technology into personal projects. Now your PCs can ride trains, planes, have radios, bikes, geiger counters, X-rays, cyber-parts, etc without technology being so ubiquitous to hamper the feeling of a wild, mysterious world, while also making the inventor class usable (a personal favorite).

>the same houses where people work in the same offices and factories, all the cool places are now asphalted, all the wonders have been discovered, poisoned and taxed
Sounds more like communism.
>>
>>53293224
Yeah, I've heard that capitalist description of communism already. And yet, is just what a capitalist city looks.
>>
>>53293350
Anon, this has nothign to do with the description of anything. I grew up in a former socialistic country. Fortunately I didn't spend much time of my childhood in it, but most buildings of this time were still there. You are full of shit.
>>
>>53293224
well, for this experiment, assume we're using a working version of communism, or, better yet, a third option: A king that is actually concerned for his people and earth, and to prevent resources from being wasted in consumistic, banal production (think on all the tonnes of shit that are sold everyday, wasting water, energy, petrol; and polluting earth in the proccess), and to avoid corporate wars and businessmen taking control over the country, this monarch has shut down free market.

All innovation and production is either coming from the government scientists, from freelance inventors (which are regarded as weird people among the citizens) or from illegal, subversive factions that want to overrule the king.

>Let me explain: Modern technology hampers adventure in the sense that we perceive the earth as a cloned city, over and over
That's because we explored and settled the surface thoroughly.
On the other hand there still are places nobody's been to. Just recently some explorers went to an abandoned Mayan or something city dedicated to a monkey god; nobody had been there since the original inhabitants got out. They apparently had a rather hard and dangerous journey in the forest to get there.
Then they got infected by flesh eating parasites after reaching the city.

I no longer believe this. The stuff I made years ago sucks. I'm getting better with practice, but I'm at least six years away from something that anyone else would even blink at. It doesn't bother me because I don't work for other people, but I'm not going to entertain any delusions as to the ingenuity of my current portfolio.

all the mithril in my world sits in one spot, right under a giant ass mountain that dwarves inhabit.
>here's the kicker:
as they have dug deeper over the centuries, they have found spots where the mithril is purer and softer than normal, but exposure to heat sets it just fine. those spots have always been accompanied by drafts of air that carry a faint moaning noise, almost like sobbing. finally, after mining through a particularly soft spot, with the mithril being almost a watery consistency, a chunk of rock broke away and revealed a giant eye, mithril pouring forth like tears.
turns out mother earth was buried under a mountain for some unknown reason and her tears form mithril over time.

so other then being buried under a mountain and thousands of dwarven toilets, why does mother earth cry? why is she entombed in the first place?

Dunno, Anon, during my visit of da US of A that was quite accurate.
Also, poor capitalist countries look exactly like that. Cheap mass buildings and projects aren't exclusive to socialists.

Trying to apply a bit of my background in total war autism (Europa Barbarorum and Broken Crescent and so on) to have a similar broad scope of ethnic groups, tribes, and all that. But that's nothing too novel since Hyboria has it and others do too.

I'm still on the map phase so not much else is charted out. A few nascent ideas are:

"Swiss Winged Elves" - maybe not winged but riding winged mounts, but the idea is the No-money-no-swiss swiss mercenary tradition with their insularity.

Albino Almoravid/Tuareg (so far as the appearance, not culture) either human or elf looking fallen Djinn. Possibly glowy eyes. Cannibalistic but not exclusively. Wear veils with just eyes visible or ornate decorative masks (wood, metal, ivory) in public/outdoors. Undecided if major physical superiority (dexterity or strength) to make up for smaller birth-rates. Almoravids had a neat thing about being this almost silent veiled wave of men who stood, fought and died stoically. Maybe some regenerative methodology to allow one that isn't decapitated to have a lazarus pool style rejuvenation. Possible that ruling caste dwelling over Arab/Yemeni humans have grown more decadent and luxury-loving (as late Almoravids did) while cavern/hill dwelling tribesmen retain the stoic rural spirit.

Satyr style folk inspired by the Herodotus comment of Thracians ("If they could unite they would conquer the world but they are too busy fighting eachother"), the military function/style of the Daylami and others in the Caucasus like the Albanians, Georgians and Median-Atropatenes.

Religion of the word, spoken and written. Knowledge of the divine tongue (think the true name of a demon) allows for a kind of magic. Largely more subtle and not throwing fireballs but that might be technically feasible.

You're supposed to make profit out of weird-ass biotopes of the great old underground ocean (and its' coasts).
>Whats the one thing you can take away from your setting and say "this is balla as fuck!"
Giant, lithotrophic, gem-eating magical arachnids who can make web out of said gems. They are very loyal and can be as intelligent as a six year old hunam.
The default race used them as a kind of living 3d-printers to make a bunch of crystal dreadnaughts.

>PCs are all bards in addition of their class
>Playing gigs they get buff tokens to spend later (retroactivelly statng what someone in the audience felt, how they acted, getting pieces of info about the town or just get combat buffs)
>every instrument has different bonus depending on situation
>bardic trade is subject to prosecution unless you sing praises to current totalitarist leader
>a revolution is gestating among the land (Still i need a good theme for it, because i don't want to copy anything from the real world to avoid falling into clichés; black opressed people, feminism, etc)
