Surprisingly large for a british bird, too. They got reintroduced and followed the thermals on the motorways and railways because they spend a lot of time soaring around looking for food and just generally enjoying flight. Long-running war with crows.

I've used penguins in games before. Ridged, xenophobic, cold in manner, extremely protective of their clans. Attitude is kinda like dwarves but as migratory raiders rather than miners. Fight in dense formations of pikeblocks or shieldwalls.

The birds are actually rather pretty so i figure an anthropomorphized version of them would be as well. At a distance they would appear like attractive, albeit dishevelled humanoids, but upon closer inspection you'd start to notice how awkward and weird they are and of course their distinct odour.

I'm not sure how they would be viable in a society, hell i am not sure how they survive in nature. That said i kinda want a stinky bumbling hoatzin-man sidekick who always disapears moments before dangerous situations occour and reappears shortly after it's safe again.

Maybe they just live at the outskirts of society doing the nasty jobs that other races dislike, ie. garbage men. That said i like the idea that they would just try to fit in as best they could and that society at large wouldn't necessarily be able to recognize them for what they are. They'd be slightly incompetent at everything they do, but somehow be able to mostly dodge serious implications of their failures.

The names were stupid but I had a few broad generalistion for them.

World Claws were the flightless harpies. They were medium sized but typically came up to about chest hight of an average human. Their wings have degraded into raptor like claws and they have considerable dexterity with them but they fight primarily with their talons even going so far as to commission mithril leg armor and adamantine claw extensions. They take after various flightless birds like peacocks and ostriches

Fisher Kings were small sized harpies who are really good at swimming and usually tend to look like vary varities of penguins.

Cloud Dancers were the ones that can fly and have the largest variety in body shapes.

Pitohui are one of but a handful of birds that use toxins to defend themselves from predation.

The shoebill is scary.
The Shoebill will stand there, motionless as a statue, and wait for some poor lungfish or baby crocodile to swim by. Then the bird will pounce forward, all five feet of it, with its massive bill wide open, engulfing its target along with water, mud, vegetation, and probably any other hapless fish minding their own business. Clamping down on its prey, the bird will start to swing its massive head back and forth, tipping out whatever stuff it doesn’t want to eat. When there’s nothing but lungfish or crocodile left, the Shoebill will give it a quick decapitation with the sharp edges of the bill and swallow away.

Oh, I am playing one of these in a current GURPS campaign, we were allowed D&D inspired races, and I got away with putting birds, dragonblooded, lizardmen, and such in a blender, upgraded the claws to talons, because why the fuck not. Think feathered kobolds but violently effective.

Anyways, since I'm a GM I couldn't resist world building.

They're a hegemony of city states. Inside the city states the basic unit is a group of Hoatzin called a wing, with a minim of 4 members. Sometimes families, sometimes not, often not in many cases.

They're Shamanistic, but not a full out theocracy, there's three branches beyond civilians, Civil, Holy, and Military. Civilians form wings and leave them as they wish, for rulership members of all three branches of goverment come together.

Because they lay more than one egg at a time they can be very prone to overpopulation, to that end they enchant members of the military to be sexless (the spell is easily removed) and it is only removed once they become officers or retire. There's a cadre of them which are basically brainwashed and their intelligence throtled.

That cadre are specialized bodyguards.

Shoebills strike me as the kind of guys you'd meet in some Gothic mansion, telling twisted tales of macabre, morbid madmen or sinister scoundrels in their study, all of them with more truth than the party would feel comfortable with. They would be cold but not openly hostile, just this eerie, super tall bird dude who's been through some dark shit but brushes it off calmly. And always having that piercing stare, never flinching, rarely blinking.

Like just imagine your party going to one of these guys to collect info on some plot thread, never sure if the scary bird man might flip out on them for any kind of slight they make against it. Could also see a dude like this having a bit of dry wit and a Laconic sense of humor. Maybe a trophy or two to show off that they're not all talk.
