In most east asian mythology, pointed ears are sort of a general indicator for demons, gods, and all manner of supernatural creatures. This is why they tend to give elves huuuuge ears to differentiate them further.

Moreover, elves were sometimes considered leftover spirits and false gods under christian dogma

The real reason though is the artists were probably asian, and in Japan at least pointed ears = short hand for oni/supernatural. Which is why anime elves have huge fucking wiggly leaf ears, to differentiate them.
