Hey /tg/
So I'm going to run a metal gear game in gurps

>what would be the best way to run a game like this?

>whats a radical plot hook to start off with?

What metal gear are you going for? Action should be useful for all of them, with the crazier ones using Gun Fu and Powers. Martial Arts/Fairbairn for CQC.

In Metal Gear, you go big or go home. Don't be afraid to play it straight, either. I recall someone talking about a MGS game they played in where they were given a tutorial on the system they were playing in-universe. It sounded like a great time. Unfortunately, they didn't share any other information about the game with me.
>>
>>53201593
>Going Metal Gear.
Throw common sense and good story telling right out the window and shoot it so hard the mass it takes on collapses in on itself.

Ghosts, psychics, backflips off rockets! It's all good here baby.

As for a plothook, go for either a VR simulation or going straight onto a minor espionage mission.
>>
Op here I love spy movies and plan to do something in the earlier games.

What kind of bad guy should I make?
>>
>>53201593
1. PCs are completely mundane akin to Snake, that means no super powers. Metal Gear doesn't quite work as good when non-bosses can't even touch the characters.

Tactical Shooting book.

2. Rainbow Six-like team assembled by UN under secret orders from patriots to mop up PFs after the events of MGSV.

3. Lemme play man.
>>
>>53202316
>Implying that all the Metal Gear games (except 5, we don't talk about 5) didn't have good storytelling.
>>
>>53202744
That's completely true though. The storytelling of MGS reminds me more of professional wrestling over anything else.
>>
>>53201593
Depends on what you want to play, use basic set, high tech, and tactical shooting. Maybe mass combat if you want to do mother base.
Also, I want to play this.

A common theme I noticed is that its always a mission that seems normal, but gradually escalates into batshit insane plot twists.

There's also a lot of breaks between the main mission, which can be looking for a key, finding a weapon to get past a boss, or finding an npc to help them with something.

The players are sent to SAVAGE AFRICA to rescued a VALUABLE HOSTAGE. The hostage is a scientist, working on a weapon that will change the nature of war forever. It's widely assumed he has a nuke.

But it's no nuke - It's a Metal Gear! The scientist actually 'allowed' himself to be kidnapped, because he believed that displaying the power of this Metal Gear would make war impossible. Except another team of killers is sent in to do in the PCs and to capture the Gear for the Communists.

However, it turns out that the Metal Gear has already been tampered with. A virus has been uploaded that sets the thing to 'rampage'. It turns out that the military-industrial complex actually wants an incident to ramp up the threat of terror as a means of social control.

EXCEPT one of the members of the enemy team is a deep-cover double-agent, who plans to replace the Gear's nuclear warhead with a virus payload. What should be a false-flag attack could now have apocalyptic results.

Meanwhile, a man with NO FACE appears and disappears like a mirage, and warns the PCs that none of this is actually happening. He might have a point, when events start looping.
>>
>>53208164
That's awesome thanks
>>
>>53201593
>whats a radical plot hook to start off with
There are rumors that someone cloned The Boss.
>>
>>53208538

To go with that - there's a little girl who's said to be a clone of the Boss. The PCs are supposed to extract her. Except it turns out that actually, it's fake! There's a deadly biological weapon in her blood. Her father injected her with a formula that keeps it in stasis. The government wants the PCs to bring her back so they can captured this super-plague.

However, it turns out...The girl is contagious! The PCs are all already infected with the super-plague.

Except it's not a super-plague, it's a retro-virus! It was based off the Boss's DNA, and it turns people into super-soldiers. Well, that or it kills them.

However, it turns out - the virus is actually harmless. What it does is to impart the Boss's values and memories (fragmented as they are) via genetic memory.

BUT it turns out that within the Boss's fragmented memories, there's actually a key to a deadly secret the Boss took to her grave. A secret that dates all the way back to WWII and the Wisemen's Council.

The little girl is actually a powerful medium, who is supposed to assimilate the Boss's memories in the hopes of creating a new one. However, most people are deeply skeptical of the existence of mediums. She's not a medium, but she HAS met the Boss, who was influential in her development. In other words, the Boss imparted her memes to her. The girl has an eidetic memory, and has an accurate idea of how the Boss would act and what she might want.

An american remnant loyalist group, known as the Minute Men, have kidnapped an important scientist to build them a new secret weapon.

The players must infiltrate the Minute Men's base, which used to be an abandoned off-shore oil rig complex. The commanding officer of this mission is an advanced ai, and the tech specialist is Otacon. There they discover that the scientist is building a new Metal Gear. Metal Gear Solid Snake . This new metal gear is a complete synthetic replication of the world's greatest soldier, completely made out of nano-machines. It has the ability to merge its consciousness with other metal gears and control them.

As your players work through the mission, they discover that they are actually the clones of Liquid snake. Solid Snake's eternal arch-nemesis. Liquid snake was the one who actually designed the original concept of turning Solid Snake into a metal gear, and he was the only one besides the scientist who knew the self-destruct sequence. Unfortunately the scientist was killed by a PMC. However, the leader of this remnant group has Liquid Snake's hand as a totem somewhere in the base (Liquid was his hero).

If the players can get Liquid's hand and merge with it, then they would be able to convince him to give them the self-destruct code.

But as they break into the leader's office, they discover that he is actually the clone of Venom Snake (Liquid snake was his mentor). But when all looks lost and Metal Gear Solid Snake, Venom Snake Clone, and Liquid Snake Clone-Liquid Snake team up to take out the party, a new metal gear and Pliskin show up and saves them. Then they find out that the new metal gear is actually controlled by the advanced ai, that is actually Raiden's consciousness transferred into the metal gear (prototype for building Metal Gear Solid Snake).

When Metal Gear Solid Snake tries to possess Metal Gear Raiden, they get into a struggle to take control. However, this was all a trap by M

Plot: [COUNTRY] has NUKES and/or METAL GEAR. You have to stop them. The KGB, a prison sequence, triple agents and child-robot-assassins are optional.

>>
What is wrong with you guys? Foxhound was only one organization. Come up with your own naming conventions. Dead Cell had code names based on slurs.
>>
>>53214188

Foxhound used the same conventions as MSF/Diamond Dogs. Also how the fuck did Dead Cell have slurs as codenames? Vamp? Fortune? Fatman?
>>
>>53214252
Vamp (refers to bisexuality), Fortune (honestly don't know about this one), Fatman (obvious), Chinaman (obvious), Old Boy (obvious)
"Slur" may have been the wrong word, but there's an obvious pattern of being named after descriptive insults (except maybe for Fortune).
>>
>>53214321

Didn't know about Vamp, but I'd argue Fatman, since that was one of the bombs the US dropped on Japan. Old Boy is probably the same, since the other bomb was Little Boy.
This is the first time I've heard about Chinaman, though, wtf kojima
>>
>>53214348
Fatman was actually fat, though, so I think it's just a "clever" double meaning, like how Vamp also means vampire. Saying that Old Boy, who wasn't even involved with bombs, is a reference to Little Boy is a stretch, though.
>>
>>53214385

I'm just assuming Fatman and ___ Boy aren't a coincidence, more than anything. Especially since Kojima's from Japan and they have an entire industry dedicated to remembering they got fucking nuked.
>>
>>53201593
I think it's important to remember that Metal Gear is mostly ruled by "plausibility." If you could describe a plot point, character, technology, etc. to the average, untrained citizen and have them say "well, that might work/be true," then feel free to include it. Contrary to popular belief, Metal Gear doesn't let itself get all that far out there. It rarely leaves the grip of this kind of "plausibility."
>>
>>53214467
In any case, "Old" is included, and Old Boy was basically the Axis Powers version of the End, so it fits the insult theme.
>>
>>53214486
Better than the "lol i dunno nanomachines" theme I've got going, so I'll give you that one.
>>
>>53201593
>what would be the best way to run a game like this?
Everyone in the squad has a different specialty, but they're all special ops grunts instead of a good-aligned miniboss squad. Stuff like demolitions, infiltration, communications, and medical specialists. Teamwork and everyone's specialties are required to move through the complex the game is set in and beat bosses. There should also be a support team that provide most of the NPC dialogue and exposition, and to explain the concepts the game is running with.

>whats a radical plot hook to start off with?
DEEP IN THE HIMALAYAS, a secret facility has been constructed by the Chinese branch of the Philosophers, containing a secret nuclear weapons project. Your team has been instructed to infiltrate the facility, steal the data of the project, and destroy any prototypes they find. But the rabbit hole goes deeper when when the results of the human experimentation and cloning projects also kept at the facility conduct an armed takeover 4 hours prior to the team's arrival at the base. They plan to use the nuclear project, a Metal Gear, to wipe out life on earth.

Like others anons have said make it tacticool and don't give superpowers/supertechnology to PCs(give them to bosses instead) Take inspiration from MGS1-3 rather than 4,PW and V. Throw them into one giant hostile isolated place surrounded by enemies. Make them communicate through codec so when they split up they can still exchange informations and make plans.

Obviously Reynard is actually in league with the pope and goes rogue on his Cathar masters at some point. And probably the disease isn't actually the black death, but some kind of brain fever that makes people docile and religious - the idea is to have a means of population control without creating the reduction in labour that led to a worker boom and a reduction of the nobility's power from the actual black death. And IDK I guess the crown jewels of both countries contain the minds/souls of their kings and the knights templar want to secretly resurrect the actual companions of Charlemagne by stealing Joyeuse. They'll create a perfect cross-European monarchy led by eternal, perfect knights with perfectly docile peasants.

Something like that, I'll roll with it as we go.

You can't do tactical espionage in a team, regardless of what those spin-off games tell you.

The PC's should be the government black ops team with weird powers turned rogue, and the antagonist should be the spy trying to save the world from them.

The timing for this thread is pretty perfect because I was just about to make a Metal Gear thread myself.

I also want to run a campaign and am looking to a system that can handle both, the autistic gun porn and tacticool-ness that would make a /k/ user wet and the batshit powers that people like Psycho Mantis, The Pain, and Quiet have.

I thought about using a Superhero system and just hoping that it also has the tacticool part down, as far as I know Wild Talents is the successor to Godlike which was about superpowers in World War 2 so it should have good rules for gunfights, right?

Or would you recommend another system?

Even better. The fight takes place in a nightmarish rally-race arena, and there's periodic air support that drops in pods with motorbikes in them, both of which you have to avoid or get exploded.

Also, luchador mask, bare chest, high collar, and fights with a chain.
>>
What are some interesting naming conventions for boss squads besides just using this Foxhound inspired one >>53203504?

Looking back at the naming conventions we know about there seems to be plenty of freedom in what they can be
>[Adjective or noun that describes their general modus operandi]+[thematically relevant animal]
>I honestly have no idea what Dead Cell had going
>[The]+[Emotion they cause or just anything that sounds cool if you put "the" before it in The End's case]
>name of a weather phenomenom, in Mistral's case descriptive of their native country

Concept wise I thought about maybe a unit that uses colors and things associated with the color, red can stand for rage and blood but also for royalty and love, blue often expresses sadness but also stands for water/the ocean and calmness etc.

I'm thinking that someone's name just being "Yellow" or "Green" is too little but I'm struggling to come up with a second part, maybe it could be like in Foxhound where the second word is more decoration than description.

Anyway to give the color thing a Metal Gear kind of twist I'm thinking that everyone in the unit is assigned mutliple different colors, person A could be both Blue and Crimson while Person B is both Yellow and Scarlet.
My idea is that the unit is made of brain washed super soldiers and each soldier has multiple personalities, each one assigned a different color. The color that gets called to a mission is the personality they take on for the duration.

The multiple personalities stem from the people responsible for creating the super soldiers having trouble giving them proper brain capacity to remember all the stuff a super soldier should know so to trick their brains into having a higher capacity (according to metal gear science logic) they give them multiple personalities that each can individually reach the memory cap and be experts in different fields.

Blue's amazing at sniping, red knows everythomg about explosives. They are the same person.

I second the first post's recommendation of the Action series (Action 4 in particular is mai waifu). How about sultry older woman with a cowboy motif that makes use of a lever action rifle, a sawed off double barrel shotgun, and a revolver that she only uses during cutscenes and a climatic final showdown at high noon with you?

>>
>>53222135
Or perhaps a Christmas Cake veteran recalled for one last job.
>>
>>53222312
That's fantastic.

All her entrances are foreshadowed by the sound of spurs clicking on the ground, and her costume is half wild west burlesque, half desperado gunslinger.

Metal (Band) Gear, the greatest stage know to mankind. Upon it, your shreds can reach the entire world, amplifying solos with enough force to burst eardrums and destroy buildings.

Now a rogue band of the greatest musicians in the world has taken control of it, and threaten all that you know with its awe inspiring power. You have been chosen to infiltrate their facility and prevent them from activating Metal As Fuck Gear. Go forth, and rock!

You know what, fuck it. I want to play Brutal Legend Gear.

>Mysterious feral child found in a mountain range during an OP that otherwise didn't turn out. Doesn't speak a language anyone can comprehend but is extremely good at shimmying up just about anything. When he gets angry it inexplicably begins to snow.
>Fighter Snake
>Genome soldier who revered Big Boss but found himself pretty terrible about the art of stealth in general. Instead, he worships Boss's legendary combat prowess, and seeks to emulate his tactically sound, yet bombastically effective combat style.

>Sole survivor of some 3rd world village that had been utterly wiped out. Wields a bow. Rumored to be able to commune with insects.

>De facto leader and aging member of the now defunct Diamond Dogs. Wants to bring back the glory days but struggles to find a place among the glut of contemporary PMC's.

Team of losers and cast-outs struggling to survive. Sometime shortly before or after GotP, I imagine
