What's the most ridiculous fantasy race/species you've ever seen at the table?
>>
Yuan-Ti, or those weird rainbow winged wolf things (can't remember name)

Those fucking backwards-hand tiger people

why are their goddamn hands backwards

why
>>

That's why.

He was awesome. The second pic eventually became another PC's character when he lost his first. We became the setting's version of the guys from Cho-Aniki cross with Hans and Frans, constantly searching for the sacred protein to achieve maximum gains.

Unicorns were brutal creatures who defended various holy sites and lived in wild nature. They could take down dragons.

Sadly they also became tied to purity and virginity and femininity, but old school unicorns were pretty beast.
>>
>>53116625
Just a unicorn, maybe a cleric or favored soul of Mielikki. Not anything that would require a new civilisation to justify.

Also, where did you get that idea?
I didn't quote OP, nor did the guy I replied to,
>>
>>53113001
Basically all of them in Talislanta.

But it so overdoes it, takes the whole idea and runs full steam so hard that they all work anyhow.
>>
>>53115806
Now, in all fairness, Google didn't exist back in 1975. It also didn't exist in 1979, or 1981. I'm looking at some pretty old monster manuals right now, and, to be quite frank, I'm surprised Gygax got as much right as he did. Have you seen that old book where he stats various myth figures? I used to have it, but lost it. It was first ed., too, so it still had Cthullhu, before lawyers had to go and ruin it. That one was awesome, and showed that sometimes, they actually did the research. Like the stats for Monkey. That son of a bitch is fucking broken, even by the more open standards of OSR.

So, Gygax occasionally got some stuff wrong, or a little off. Bear in mind, he (and Arneson, I guess) had to make these things work in his system, and his settings. It is a shame that Rakshasas were one of the only ones introduced at first, considering how awesome fighting an Asura would be. Or that dude with the ten heads. Or the blue guy. Or the other blue guy.
>>
>>53116706
>>53116625

>Sadly they also became tied to purity and virginity

Agreed

>femininity

Disagree
>>
>>53116946

They are tied to benign expressions of female sexuality, the enjoyment of the sexual sensation of riding without breaking the hymen, even though they have a long, scary 'horn' to penetrate with. So they're pretty much the 3rd base of monsters.

The only real problem I ever had with centaurs was that I was not sure which part of the body to cover with a loincloth.

Anyway, I really like this picture. To me, it emphasize the whole point of playing a centaur, and why everyone who forbids non-core races on grounds other than established setting reasons are the ones who kill fantasy gaming and roleplay.

I don't care if you don't like fantasy races as characters. They lead to many more options for roleplay and storytelling. Such as a fucking joke of a horse-guy going down a ladder rescuing a girl. This would be nice to see in my games.

Homebrew race from a homebrew Pathfinder setting one of my friends made. There were technically 5 seperate races, but you could easily treat them as one with 5 sub races. They were birdfolk, called only by the name of the type of bird they resembled. Not quite like kenku, they were humanoids with a few sparse patches of feathers, light builds, and a pair of functioning bird wings sprouting from their shoulders. There were swans, hawks, hummingbirds, and crows. Each got a fly speed, but hawks were fastest.

Mechanically they were powerful, but still fairly balanced. The fly speed advantage wasn't as big a deal when 7/10 NPCs can also fly, since these birdfolk made up a pretty big chunk of the setting's population.

You maybe would have a point if the war was the US vs Vietnam, when in actuality it was North Vietnam vs South Vietnam with the US helping on the side.
>>
One of our players is that guy and he used to run games until we forced him out of it. His homebrew setting was a mix of Dark Souls and monstergirl anime tropes. The races in his magical realm were humans, not-dwarves, not-dragonborns, not-tieflings, and monstergirls. There was a fucking race of bee people. And he tried to have us fuck at least one in each campaign. But I'll emphasize the bee people part.

Not even close.
I know in retrospect the path history took seems like the only one it could of took but thats really not the case.
If you go back and read what people actually thought after the vietnam war and what people did after it you realize that america came seriously close to losing the cold war because of it.
Only the deft political maneuvering of nixon (whatever your opinion on watergate is) and the soviets making the same mistake in afghanistan during the 80's is what allowed america to come out on top.
So no losing vietnam did not help america win the cold war.
Not that winning would have helped either.

I use them as the unexpected result whenever mortals try to create artificial infernal races to do their bidding. They tend to leave no trace of their creators and hide their presence, over the centuries they inspired tales of vampires and similar creatures. There's a ton to work with in real myths and the default D&D version is just one narrow view.

We didn't win the cold war, the commies lost it because, once again, Soviet-style central planning (AKA Marxism-Leninism) doesn't actually work over the long term as an economic system.

Had the USSR been doing from the beginning what the Chinese have been doing since the late 1970s - quasi-nationalist one-party dictatorship + free market economy - things might have turned out differently. Perhaps very differently.

He's right about us being the Nationalists International, though. It comes from being internet autism given human form. Where else do Australian posters use Finnish memes to try and influence a French election?

The coming Nationalist regimes will have much more connection and camaraderie between them then their globalist liberal democratic counterparts ever did, as their brotherhood is and will be forged through struggle, rather than from being forcefed the same ideology from on high.

We will see, in the end, if anything changes. The fact is, though, that the modern Nationalists are more connected and willing to work together than any of the so-called international movements that came before.

I've never had someone try to play an unusual race purely because they thought it was cool.

It's always to try to get at some broken power, which is always why it isn't allowed.

Birdman? Trying to get access to free flight.
Centuar? Trying to get ridiculous movespeed or size.
Snake Person? Oh I guess that's fine... oh you picked monk and you're going to spam poison bite get the fuck out of here.
>>
>>53131409
While I agree with getting immediate access to flying can annoying to balance, I don't think centaur are too problematic rules wise. Give them the Goliath's count as one size larger for str checks and carrying and give them a natural hoof attack. The most annoying thing would be trying to navigate dungeons and things are a horse person.

Before something escalates out of this, I meant that anyone should google something before complaining about it, such as the reverse handed tiger-people of the first posts in the thread, which were quoted in the post you quoted.

It has everything to do with your post unless you replied without reading, but you wouldn't do that, wouldn't you?

>>
>>53133390
No. But you are being intentionally obtuse, for the posts mentioned in my post where complaining about the "non-authenticity" and "simplification" of the original mythological creature, while also complaining about the fact that they made up the backwards hands, which are a defining trait of the creature.

This, you should understand, is not about aesthetics and everything about it being a real mythological creature.

And your last line is nonsensical, and you should work to fix that. By googling something you are meant to find superficial and easy to access data, such as a wiki page.

I once had a player bring a literal monkey to the game. An awakened one, sure, but he was a monkey. Weird part was that he went out of his way to hide it, even OOC - even after we'd all learned what the character was.

I was in a D&D game where every goddamn halfling in the setting had orange skin, green hair, wore maroon shirts, white gloves and white bib overalls. in fact they were the ONLY race in the setting that had the technology for bib overalls. and they were called the Oompa-Loompa halflings.
We, the PCs decided they were too stupid looking to live, so we set out to kill every last one of them. I'm talking Pol Pot levels of death. After the first 10 the DM quit giving us xp for killing any of them.
Once we had reduced their population to double digits, we were told OOC that they had an important place in the ecosystem and were the only beings that could eat a particularly invasive plant, and their shit (containing the digested remains of this plant) was what made magic happen, and our actions had destroyed the world.

Yepyep, deporter in chief. It came up pretty often. Still, it's good to secure this achievement.

Funnily Obama and Trump have a great deal of overlap in terms of policy in some areas, moreso than Obama and Hillary or Trump and other GOPniks. Their biggest differences are stylistic and in terms of which sectional constituencies (e.g. blacks or whites) they pander to more.
>>
>>53141254

They were created by the last race of "Lords" who went around experimenting on stuff with magic to make servitor races. These things -- called Lazarui -- were kind of the "staunchly atheist science believers" of the setting. They also had cities built under the harbors of coastal cities.

It was actually the US vs Vietnam, Anon.

The vast majority of the US's war effort targeted the South. Its civilian population recieved most of the bombs and all of the gas.
Actions against the North were mainly geared towards keeping them from effectively interfering as the general US plan was to reverse the ongoing commie infection of the whole of Vietnam by means of divide&conquer. Thing was that the South never fell to their puppets for good, no matter how many people they gassed and other world powers prevented them from escalating the war towards the North.

Not exactly a race all on it's own I guess, but thanks to my GM, my bard went from being a half-elf to half-elf/half-catfolk.

Had it in my backstory that my bard had never met his parents, having been dropped off at the Church as an infant, but that his father was an elvish noble and his mother was one of his maidservants. Turns out, I never explicitly specified my mother was human, so the GM decided to take liberties and introduce a catfolk NPC at some point, eventually having a reveal that said NPC was my bard's mother.

Not a twist I was completely ready for, but I can roll with it.

Star Wars D6 - The Hoojib

These little squirrel rat things are force sensitive by nature and can eat/feed on electricity.

We had a player pick one as his species for a Jedi once. He went around drinking enemy ammo packs whenever we did a covert mission.

Oh I have no issue with brewing Orcs and Orogs, if you don't want to put much effort into it, you could simply design them as stronger half-orcs with sunlight sensitivity.
However, I'd have to find a homebrew game, or join a game in which I'm the only one asking for, and using homebrew, which some fucker will probably turn into a That Guy story here.
