It used some out-of-genre terminology (powers, the role names) and derpy naming conventions (steel serpent strike!), and that really pissed people off.

The actual system is a mixed bag. Low-level characters are boring (instead of made of tissue paper like most D&Ds), and there's not enough descriptive text for what things do out of combat. On the flip side the tactical combat is pretty good, the monster designs are great (especially the later monster manuals) and the balance is respectable.

I kinda want to make a MMORPG where being a wizard is limited, like you need to hold some item to access to ( the OP ) magic and there's only 50 per server.
Not connecting for at least 30 hours per month, so around one hour per day, would make you lose the item and make it respawn randomly somewhere in the world.
Could be looted from your body.
Death while holding the item results in permadeath and you have no start from scratch ( normal death would be the standard MMORPG fare ).

Would make for a great dynamic i think.
Wanna be the badass, go on a quest to find one of the item, make a big faction and g assail one of the wizard.
The wizards could go full Emperor, or just be on the run, wreak havoc there then teleporting before the attention is too big.
Wizards allying to protect themselves... Except you get a multiplicative 50% boost for each item you hold.
Maybe eventually one wizard gets to hold all the 50 items, becoming the god of the server... Until boredom makes him suicide for a fresh start. Maybe give to the ones reaching 50 items some mechanical boost for inter-wizard wars incentives.

Normal players would still be able to play the game normally, conquer land etc, just with wizard being big wild-card. They'd be relatively powerless against them too, maybe add some expensive in money ressources and time to obtain elixirs and shit making one guy immune to magic, maybe mechanically balance it so that 50 max level fags can overpowered a full-buffed wizard in melee, requiring around one month to farm the elixirs, less if more people help.

Maybe having each different servers having different rate of all these variable to keep things interesting.

Not nearly as much as 3.5; martials can do more DPR to a single target than a caster, and the caster only has so many spell slots for AoE stuff. And with the addition of the Concentration mechanic, making it so the casters can only have 1 buff up at a time and have to not lose focus on it by getting hit, they can't just derp around with Greater Invisibility + Haste + Fly on them and casting save or suck spells.

The only thing casters have over martials is out of combat versatility, and that only matters in the later levels when they get the more powerful, world-altering spells - which they can only cast 2-3 times a day at most, because you don't get extra spell slots once your casting stat starts to get high enough.

I'll invest in it in five or ten years and see how it goes.
Keep the graphics simple and low-poly, heavy-emphasis on customisation, in-game shop for the lewd customisation...
Making sure you can gift the in-game shop stuff should encourage whale to spend more, too.
Maybe have an ingame-shop only inventory slot that function as a tabard for FoF purposes.

The wizards should be able to do terraforming, so the engine need to handle that too. Dofus does it, but it's easier for them. I don't want a 2D game, but a 2D one.
Maybe give an interface like black and white to the wizard, except their sphere of influence is based on the position of their avatar.
Maybe some faction can align with a specific wizard to integrate their land into his sphere of influence, regardless of distance.

Still didn't decide on whether the wizards are immortal for some time after becoming one for giving them the time to acclimate with their new power. Also some way to specialise, though i want to make sure all wizard have access to all powers, so it'd be just some bigger number instead of mechanical changes.

Maybe i should look up countries where codemonkeys are cheap ( but competent ) and move there.

But seriously I like the idea, a sandbox idea like this is something desperately needed. No idea on where to find cheap code monkeys that could do the mmorpg networking, honestly programmers in the states are already cheap enough I would think. Hell, if you were serious I'd would actually help

The options available in 4e are many things. Interesting is not one of them.

The setup of your campaign has a lot more to do with the relative power of spellcasters and can go a long way even without changing the ruleset.

A megadungeon campaign with time pressure and gobs of random encounters, for example, is a lot harder on casters than a narrative campaign with only a handful of setpiece battles and lots of time to prepare.

In a dungeon-crawl, Wizard utility powers like Fly or Teleport are less useful underground, and a high encounter rate forces careful rationing of combat spells. Some D&D-style rulesets have individually more or less powerful casters, but the limitations on casters are much more meaningful in dungeon-crawl scenarios.

So, I just picked up DCC RPG from Goodman Games. It's an AD&D reskin of 3rd. No feats, No skill points every level, no 14,478,342 XP, it's a beautiful streamlined system that is not only fun to play. But they hired a bunch of the old TSR artist to do the artwork. Not enough people know how dope this system is.
