What are some /tg/ pleb filters?

What are some simple ways of identifying uncultivated swine in the game store or at the gaming table?

1. They roll stats without being told to
2. Their only experience is in pre-written modules
3. They've been playing for more than a year, but have only ever played some edition of DnD
4. Their character concept stops with their class and race.
>>
>>53045085
They play pathfinder
They don't thin their paints
>>
Their ability to type (spelling, grammar, etc.)
Their punctuality to the game
How they interact with other players before the game (bossing around or bullying, etc.)
How they interact with me as a GM (arguing constantly, insulting me)
If they play D&D, they're out. Everything else gets a warning.
>>
>>53045085
I ask them who their favorite superhero is. If their answer is Batman, I stop talking to them immediately. Any big name Avenger or JL member gets a warning and warrant further investigation. Almost anyone else should be good, but isn't an immediate red flag. And anyone who says a hero I haven't heard of gets an automatic pass.
>>
>>53045433
What if I dont care about capeshit?

What if I think picking favorites is for children?
>>
>>53045490
Depends on how you say it. If you use the word , "Capeshit" I know you will immediately dismiss anyone who does enjoy cape comics and you get out in the Batman group. If you just don't like them, you get out in groups two or three depending on exactly how you share not liking cape comics.
>>
>>53045085
Just see if they're aware of any tabletop game other than D&D. The majority of people think that D&D is a unique nerd thing and don't realize that it's just one game among thousands of others.

From my experience I don't think you'd even have to know of obscure things to not be labeled a causal. I went to my local game/comic/nerd store and was looking for a grid battlemat and the employee thought I meant the Pathfinder map products. Another time I went in and asked if they had Savage Worlds and the guy thought I was talking about a manga. Most people know nothing about the hobby beyond D&D.
>>
>>53045683
What if I don't read comics? What if the last comic I read was in middle school? What if my only experience with comic books is that 90's animated Batman tv show?
>>
>>53045683
Im just using capeshit as a catchall meme. Personally I think the entire mainstream comicbook continuum is creatively bankrupt.

Using the term "Objectively" to describe how correct you are.

The use has gone the way of Literally in normie cultures: In the context of /tg/ it really means "Entirely my subjective opinion, except I'm autistic and want to argue about it."

Pointing this out whenever someone uses the term will earn you a response denouncing your ability to argue against their point, which you can then reply to with further bullshit until the argument is so far removed from the original topic you're finally able to unleash your weapons-grade autism in order to make the thread absolutely unbearable. Whenever anyone insults you, you either thank them for noticing or berate them for not recognizing that whatever insult they used was too mild to be accurate to you.

Throughout the whole thread you're pointing out that you're doing this, then pointing out that you're pointing it out, all with purple prose and meta-humor, so it's really obvious you're being a troll, except the autist WILL STILL BE ARGUING WITH YOU. This means that no matter how cringey, retarded or insane you act, the autist is still worse because it's become obvious that he's not arguing for his point, he's just arguing because he has to have the last word. Even when you point that out, he STILL argues.

The end goal is to make /tg/ self-aware of how pointless this all is, and how some things simply aren't worth arguing with certain people, either trolls or autists, and recognize how easy it is to fall into either deplorable mindset.

No, it means you are a troll, anon.
No one who actually knows anything about the game uses the whole "everyone is a caster" line, because D&D casters have never worked the way 4e's aedu system does.
You gave yourself away with the very first line, and then tried to backpedal.

Superman, specifically the 90s and All-Star versions.

That seems a bit unfair. 3.PF groups are often violently resistant to playing other games, even for a one-shot. Instead, I'd ask them to name 3-5 RPGs that aren't D&D.

>>53045099
It's definitely a red flag.

We should have colonies for people who embrace their autism. I don't want them walking around in public.
>>
>>53045085

Try playing a few games with them and then ask yourself something like this.

1) Do they smell horrid?
2) Can they show up on time? Alternatively, if they can't make it to a game do they let you know that they will not be present?
3) If the player has problems with others, can they talk out their problems like an adult? If someone talks to them like an adult, how do they react?
4) Are they responsible enough to remember their character sheets ( if you let them keep them ), or other game materials?
>>
>>53046215
Well, this post actually contains a decent one.

Anyone who cares about being "inclusive" is a pretty good person to keep out.

People who hate D&D as much as him don't play anything.

> What are some /tg/ pleb filters?
Anything less than full immersion into the game process is an automatic red flag.
I'm serious, in my experience, anyone who describes his character with "he/she/it" instead of "I" is usually a shit player.

I've had the opposite experience. Players that know how to take the narrative voice and apply it properly, then switch for dialogue are on the same page and telling the same story. Players who use the first person in reference to their character when not talking as the character are often okay but seek loot and fame for "themselves" rather than letting their character achieve its own goals and deriving satisfaction from that.

The "airport test" i.e. "Would I want to be stuck in an airport with this person?"

Also, invite this person to spend an evening with you, doing something unrelated to your hobby. If you don't enjoy his company away from the gaming table, then you probably won't enjoy having him as a player either. Also, it can uncover other warning signs.

See the way you phrased this whole thing leads me to believe that you are a massive cunt with a superiority complex. Let's be quite frank your social skills are probably shit, and you compensate for your failings by telling yourself the lie that you are better than most people and that is why you can't get along with them. That's bullshit. Come down off of your high horse. If they are friendly, and maintain a decent standard of hygiene give them a chance. Don't look down your nose at someone who doesn't have your experience or knowledge, remember that you were new once too, and guide them to find what they enjoy in the hobby. If you just stop getting hung up on stupid shit i guarantee you'll be happier for it in the long run.

tl;dr don't be a neckbeard cunt, just try and get along with people and have fun rather than judging them for how they game, and you'll enjoy yourself more.

After a few years (read: 2) of tweaking the math, the game got to the point where a Fighter who has plenty of HP can be knocked down by a Level 2 Kobold. Combat takes five years if you're not paying attention and just spamming at-wills, people that have got a bit of knowledge take an hour max for some pretty deep and interesting combat. Not many needless and useless options, at least compared to other games.

Basically, your group just suffered from 4e's stupid beginning with a DM and a group that didn't quite understand the game. It's a good game that does its job (high-level fantasy; heroes becoming gods; light on roleplay details and heavy on the combat section) extremely well. If you're willing to give it another shot, you're gonna find something that was ahead of its time but due to external issues we'll never have anything like it again in mainstream.

It's about having a personal connection and being willing to spend extended periods of time with the person.

Better formulations of the question go along these lines: "if you were stuck in an airport with this person for 8 hours, could you handle those 8 hours alone with them?"
>>
>>53045433
Any superhero best known for being overpowered or somehow "perfect" or "the best" (Superman, Batman, Flash) is a red flag if someone calls it their favorite. Any superhero known for being underpowered or kind of a screw-up (Spider-Man, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Booster Gold) is a good sign. But by far the worst superhero to list as one's favorite is any Steve Ditko Fedora Man (The Question, Rorschach, Mr. A, or anyone who's obviously a reference to one of those three.)

Heroes are defined by their abilities first, flaws second. Superheroes much more so. When a heroic character is primarily defined by anything besides their strengths it becomes a confused mess. Note that I said, "heroes/heroic characters" not characters I general.

Put another way, being a Marvelfag just means you bought into their hype and marketing.

Also, pic related is worthwhile reading for just about anyone. Opens the eyes to the inner workings of fiction.

Favorite character is Mask of Fate. I honestly feel like the DC universe is more compelling when the A-List heroes(Justice League and adjacent) are left out. If I could reorganize the DC universe, I'd probably make Captain Marvel(Shazam) the Superman Equivalent, and basically eliminate every high-level hero in the series. From there we'd see more interesting stories about DC characters with a more believable power-level.

I'd still keep Batman in though, because when he's written correctly he is one of the more compelling characters, it's just he also has to be written to compete with Titans like Superman and The Flash.
>>
>>53051222
What powerwanking? Flawwanking is missing the forest for the trees. I think it's telling that you find recommending nonfiction books without pictures which analyse fiction to be something worth banning a person from your table for.

I'd argue Patroclus was a decent guy, given that he's the only one who treated Briseis like an actual person. The guy was a fucking war machine though, and I'm 90% sure he gets the most named kills in the Iliad. he also probably topped Achilles

The best filter for people is to see how personally they take things. A good sign that a person has their shit together mentally is that they have a sense of perspective about what situations warrant what emotions.

/tg/ often sounds like a bunch of anime characters from a slice of life comic that manufactures conflict out of petty shit. The truth is that whether or not somebody is going to make good company for a few hours has little to do with what TV shows they do or don't watch or any other gatekeeping bullshit like that.

Hiding your power level is a great way to watch people without distractions. Nerdy interests cause a sort of buildup within people and when they congregate, this causes a release that tends to put people's emotional guts on the table. Don't give in to this desperation haggis that ends up being made when many people of niche hobbies meet.

You are not your favorite anime. Nothing truly matters, and imagining unhappiness is a choice, not something that just happens to you. Act like an actualized human being and you will likely accomplish two things.
1. The conflicts on the tabletop become trivially easy to solve.
2. You draw out others to act like you do.

That is how you screen people. And if you don't enjoy each others company, that's not the end of the world. At least you saw yourself for who you are and not petty shit like whether or not you think stunt bonuses in an RPG are stupid or not.

A) or responsibility (spider-man), he has no real investment and takes things with a grain of salt. aside from revenge, which is kind of minor, he just does it for fun. in a world filled with mostly serious chariters, he is nothing but light, whih is relatable. i do my best to not worry about anything, dispite the planet being torn apart by the seams.
so am i still a red flag or what

The only things that're stuck in the '90s are the 2012 reboots of Bloodshot and Harbinger (excluding Faith, of course). They're cool and have great concepts, but the tone is way too fucking depressing.

XO Manowar, Dr. Mirage, Shadowman, Ninjak, Quantum and Woody, and Archer and Armstrong are all pretty good. Hell, I'm pumped for Secret Weapons to drop because Livewire is a goddamn beast (and she's fucking hot but that's just a bonus to me).

Of course, I'm only familiar with the reboots and not the originals, so what do I know? I'm just a stupid n00b.

Yes, you're a red flag. You like that Deadpool lacks a sense of responsibility, and that lack of (what I think is) a necessary component for life could (note, COULD and not WILL) carry on into games. Maybe you choose to do stupid things in game because, "lol, responsibility? ", or just never think about the consequences of your actions, I don't know.

Or, you could be a fine and acceptable player. I don't know you.

>Tl;Dr: i need advice on making a wolf character for 5e
I'm making a 5e human variant ranger and i need some advice. in the backstory, my character (named Byron) was cursed by the goddess Melora when he struck a priestess in one of Melora's temples. He was given the form and attributes of a wolf as punishment.
what attributes should i give him. where should he be strong and where should he be weak? i know that its a fairly unique character, but my DM is super lax with the rules. one of our party members has an eye that detects life, for example. what do you all say?

It isn't really fair to run these filters. Some poor anons don't get to pick a good gaming group, they have to take what they can get.
>>
>>53047664
Deadpool is a risky pick. The person could either be "lolsorandumb", "4th wall breaking is awesome!", or "Chaotic Neutral, lol" faggots who you need to purge with fire. However, a deadpoolfag could also be the rare patrician who likes deadpool as a deconstruction of the comic book as a medium and a parody of the formula, in which case you have someone who is either a blessing to your table, or a saboteur in the darkness.

>Anyone who wants something special made for them on their first game.
If I know you, we've played a few games, and you haven't earned my annoyance, you can show me your half-goblin techno-ninja, or whatever the fuck. The first time, you are playing a core race in a core class.

>Anyone who smells like shit
I get it. Some of us have odor control issues and there's nothing we can do about it. But this is one fucking day that you will be interacting with people. Roll around in some cheap-ass deodorant if you need to, tape some air fresheners under your arms and in your asscrack, I don't fucking care how. If you reek like cheap deodorant and body spray it's still less offensive than your stank, and I'll probably let it go for the effort.

A few things that determine if you get a game 2.
>Arguing with me
A casual reminder or questioning of the rules or a modifier? Fine, I make mistakes now and again. A question of character motivation when I say you do X? Great, I like that you're paying attention. But if you actually try and start a fight with me over a damn tabletop game, you don't come back. Nobody has time for that shit.

>Creepers, perverts, and other degenerates
I know you're fucked up. We're all fucked up. I'm no exception, I'm pretty fucked up too. But what we can all do is shelve that shit when we are expected to act socially. Nobody needs to know what you want to fuck, or what you fapped to last, or how you are gonna rape that bandit/princess. If we aren't playing an ero game, fuck off, we don't care.

>Teamkilling fucktards
There can be compelling reasons to turn on the party. The first time loot drops is not that time. I don't care if it's "in character", you agreed to play a game in which your character and these other characters generally and vaguely cooperate towards the same goal. If you made a character so against this theme that you come into direct violent conflict in under an hour, you didn't do your fucking job of making that character.

Seriously though, like ill play other systems, cuz there are plenty of decent systems i dont mind and if someone else is GMing for once i aint gonna complain, but when it comes to GMing I hardly see a point in using anything else but GURPS. I like to start with the senses. #1, odor. If I can't tolerate that, then they need to go bathe, because my nose barely even functions, and the rest of my group are not so tolerant.
Next up, appearance. I'm not gonna bar people from my table for having dyed hair, but I've learned the hard way to watch out for borderline insane SJWs when I see certain colors and cuts.
Touch is next. If a handshake indicates any kind of residue that would get onto character sheets, dice, or worst of all books, I'll take note, but if they have their own copies of any books they need it's not an automatic disbarment.
Voice: this one's petty, but I strongly dislike nasal voices, and if someone's voice aggravates me, I may not run the game as well as I ought to.
Taste comes last, and is where the senses thing falls apart and I start to judge the person under the exterior. If they can't stop babbling about anime or cartoons, their character concepts start and end at race & class, they seem overly obsessed with 'edgy' shit like drugs or vivisections, or they're belligerent and abrasive, those are all marks against them.

More than three marks against and I generally won't include someone, though up to two marks are negated by extenuating circumstances like friends' recommendations or requests, or (in the case of oneshots only, lest a campaign be destabilized) women I'd like to get to know better and flirt with after the game.

They play or have more than passing knowledge of systems other than D&D.

One system is more than enough, and one that is popular, widespread and readily available enough.
You're either a tryhard, pretentious nerd-equivalent of a hipster with your obscure little systems that noone else plays, or just a humongous loser that has nothing to do in his lone little life other than wasting time on various iterations on same shit. Yes, it's all shit, just different flavors of, so you can just grab the one everyone agrees on, and not argue which shit has more corn kernels.
My group and me have healthy lives, girlfriends/wives, jobs, other hobbies and we hang out outside RPGs, and no time to waste on various systems just so we could claim nerd cred.

You're complete garbage. You read heroic fiction for the flawed characters. Flaws in heroic fiction are fine but they are not the point. No one is initially drawn to a superhero for their flaws. The superpowers are the hook. No one sticks around unless there are good stories. Flaws are no guarantee that a story will be good. What makes a story good in heroic fiction is overcoming adversity through one's strengths, skills, abilities. There is a balancing of the scales. A proper hero has recognizable, admirable feats and strengths juxtaposed to obstacles and adversity that stands in their way whether internal or external.

I mean, take a look at you. Your adversity is indeed a flaw. You jerk off to a hero's flaws and discard their strengths and their feats in overcoming them. You don't understand genre nor storytelling as much as you think you do. I can only imagine someone telling you a personal anecdote in which they overcame adversity but then you bitch about them powerwanking themselves. What an insufferable dweeb you are.

In conclusion, I would not like to spend eight hours alone with you at an airport. I would not like to play at your table nor have you at my table. You are a pretentious sperg and your disapproval of me is flattering by implication.

So there.

That depends on if I'm discussing/describing the character or being in character.

OOC I'd describe my character, there's no ned to try to convince anyone I'm an Imperial admiral in his 50s commanding an Imperial-class. So if the ISB honcho's player digs around a bit I could tell him "You're pretty sure Beaufort has expensive tastes in Coruscant ladyboys but you're pretty sure he's not living over his budget."

IC I'd mix it up: "I march right up to that bloody window staring down any mercenary fuck with opticals on the bridge. 'Intensify forward firepower and focus the lead Imperial or will I have to beat these people to death with my dick?"

But even then I might choose an outside perspective, describing what the guy does.
