As many as you can. I think it becomes perfect once you get in the range where almost no one but the most dedicated of waifu hunters would even bother to read all of it. It makes it more emotional by requiring you to say "stop, I found her" at some point, rather than looking through everything and turning the choice into a purely rational puzzle.

The choice only truly matters if you make it in a state of incomplete information.

Will you strum it during the day?

>The Magician needs a buff and some reduction on its respective drawback.
>Perhaps some offensive capabilities and the option to extend your lifespan (potentially indefinitely) at the cost of seriously fucking over others.
I'm not talking about choice balance here, I'm talking about the theme of the CYOA. It was meant to see what choices people will make/whether they'll make a choice if "classical" choices (of the type that were common back when this came out) were presented mostly as is but with their drawbacks being highlighted instead of their benefits. The problem with the magician in that sense isn't that its drawback is too severe, it's that it's arbitrary. It needs to be something that's very naturally an extension of the magician "choice", except it's the kind of drawback most people don't think about and needs to be emphasized (like how most people who "want to be the little girl" never think about how boring a neverending childhood may one day become, or how people who want to move to a medieval fantasy world never think about no longer having access to toothbrushes and toilet seats)
>>
>>52963033
Why are you in favor of taking a dump on someone elses work because you think youre super awesome and better?
>>
>>52963253
It's a CYOA with a lot of nice potential that was very poorly executed. As it is nobody likes it, it's very rarely posted and the most common comments on it are how shitty it is. If it were fixed, it could actually create interesting choices and get people to think about the meaning of wish fulfillment, which is what it was intended for.
>>
>>52963240
Except most drawbacks are going to deter the vast majority of anons, anon. You want something that will make them consider it regardless of the consequences.
I don't think a hundred years of sorcery is going to outweigh a thousand years of torment in the pits of Tartarus.

The drawbacks should be mandatory and optional both at once, showcasing just how much the reader is willing to give up, potentially.
Up to you though. I would ever edit another's work, personally. Unless asked otherwise.

If the choices deter them, the CYOA has achieved its goal of making people reconsider their ideas about wish fulfillment and the meaning of the choices they make. However, it means nothing if they deter them without having anything to do with the consequences of the choice itself instead of just being arbitrarily tacked on drawbacks.

The point all along was for the choices to deter them. You're supposed to post this, watch people get freaked out by the drawbacks then point out to them "well, those are the same choices you happily made on any number of either cyoa's." It's about a change in perspective.

I understand what you are going for but any choice is going to be arbitrary, honestly. Because you are going to define what magician is and establish drawback in context of that. And then people will just decide that no, I want to be different kind of magician.

Like the fantasy world in that sucks but lack of antibiotics for example is only problem if it also lacks healing magic or alchemists can't make cure potions. People also seem to favour picking high fantasy worlds, where magic can be basically expected to handle most things technology does for us, with exception where you are so rugged that sword to gut is minor annoyance.

Here's the opening paragraphs:

"This image contained a friendly Genie! He's tired of how Genies are portrayed in media and is going to do something about it. Instead of granting you three wishes and screwing them up, he'll grant you a single wish in the grandest way possible. Expending that much power will make him unable to grant wishes ever again, but it'll also sent him free with an immortal lifespan! He asks you to make your wish.

Be careful! He won't twist these wishes, but he'll grant them to the fullest extent possible. If you don't really want this stuff, don't ask for it!"

Then you can pick between 5 wishes, referencing different works of fiction where those ideas were taken to the extreme. It would have I mages that subtly reference the source works, so people who know them understand why that option is so powerful.

I would guess that a "perfect utopia" would basically please everyone forever, and the Sublime is described as being as close to perfect as can be ("if not actually being one", i.e. it could actually be a perfect utopia but we don't have a proper way of discerning between near-perfect and actually-perfect utopias). Also the near-utopian society is just your way of gaining entry to the Sublime.

>>52963626
>Which?
Any and all of them.
>Explain.
Let's have a go at it, then...
>Live forever
Two (or three) methods that I can think of.
1) Take advantage of the "negative situation" clause, either by considering that your desire of being a cute little girl not being met is a negative thing, or by getting someone/-thing to maim you until you start looking like a cute little girl.
2) Wait for a time and place where body modification possibilities include becoming a cute little girl.
>Always win
Have "not being a cute little girl" as your major obstacle, and just work at it. You'll eventually win by becoming a cute little girl.
>Wealth
Wealth can take many forms, not just currency and the like. For you, it sounds like a device that'd turn you into a cute little girl would be a great treasure indeed.
>Utopia
Do you honestly think that a near-utopian society (or the perhaps-actual-utopia of Sublime) wouldn't have the means to make you into a cute little girl?
>Travel through time
Like method 2 for "live forever", except you can just go there directly instead of waiting.

If very few people get powers, then they can only do so much damage on their own before the world's militaries deal with them. If lots of people have superpowers, we have a MAD situation and things largely stay normal, as people are too afraid to super act out and receive super retaliation in response. There is some number of superpowered beings that can be too much for existing millitary forces but not enough that the average person can put a stop to shenanigans.

You have given so little information that it is entirely impossible to give you any kind of meaningful answer.
How powerful are the powers? Who gets them? Can powers be taken away?

0,1% is what, 8 million people? That's the population of Sweden. If even a percent of those (80.000 people) have "good" powers they could level cities.

I understand that you're trying to get you's and not actually working on anything or you would have answered these extremely basic questions already.

I'm guessing the author isn't doing an academic study.
Also, rather than complain about a missing option in the poll (that probably wouldn't provide much in the way of meaningful data to begin with), it'd probably be more constructive to list the reasons why each of the bosses/workplaces were deemed "not worth it".
>>
>>52963797
It's just a thought experiment that would make for an interesting experiment.

Let's say 0.1% get powers. Of those supers; 50% would get C rank powers: possibly useful, but no overt destructive potential, ex. generating a glass of slowly controllable water; 35% would get B rank powers: stronger powers, dangerous enough but not overtly lethal, ex. paralyzing someone by looking into his eyes; 14% would get A rank powers: lethal powers that put one far above average people, ex. the ability to become and manipulate smoke; 1% would get S rank powers, FORCE OF NATURE LEVEL/ EXTREME DANGER, ex. major telekinesis on a molecular level strong enough to pull down sattelites from orbit.

Maybe the numbers are off but that could be the general premise.
>>
>>52963878
>0.1% of getting powers
>50% of them are C rank
Rise the bar to 5% then it can get more interesting
>>
>>52963787
>And thus the perfect utopia would present itself differently to each participant, or some shit like that, I'd wager.
Which is the same as plugging us all into our own Matrix and filling the world with AI. No one should be dumb enough to take this.
>>
>>52963878
>thought experiment
As I said you're not making a cyoa. Don't pretend you are and clearly state this to begin with.

Converting this to real life numbers you're saying
>80 million get powers
>of which 40 milliion get kinda useful but not really powers
>of which 28 million get stronger but somehow not lethal powers but enough to knock someone out by looking at them
>of which 11 million can do something that's good but your example is shite
>8 million get FORCE OF NATURE LEVEL/EXTREME DANGER powers

Result? We all die. There will be at least 8 million of the world's population that would use this "S-level" power to kill.
Some girl got cheated on by her boyfriend? Why yes, pulling down a meteor to crush him DOES seem acceptable!
>>
>>52963940
>8 million

>>

>>52963940

Yes but doesn't this bring the superhero argument? of those 800,000 people will be dicks, yes that's human nature, but wont there also be people who are like "hey, people will be dicks, I could stop that for fame and glory!"
>>
>>52963946
Doesn't really matter. More than 5 or so S ranks would be the end of the world.
>>
>>52963957
The problem here being that the collateral damage from the fight would kill everyone. When you're tossing around tidal waves, giant earthquakes and tornadoes like punches, the world's getting fucked up regardless of what side you ostensibly were on. See: Cybertron
>>
>>52963940

>>
>>52963960

No.
Only a retard would risk his life for "fame". And how is that less selfish than taking money?
I've always thought that there's only two endings for superhero stories: Either the villains win because no one wants to die and the normal people accept their new place - or a "hero" is so powerful he can force everyone into his worldview, which isn't heroic at all.

Like >>52963960 says, unless you have a "hero" who can see the future and stop crime a la the Minority Report, there will always be someone who causes damage. Give one dick an S-power and he will kill millions before anyone can stop him.

Stop. You're making me want to be a level 3+ Esper in Academy City again. Setting would be perfect if you ignore the magic side of it.
>>
>>52963971
I would skip the "people suddenly have powers" and avoid the "how the fuck did the apocalypse not happen yet?" questions by doing what Hero Academia did. The world is set after heroes came, and they have already integrated.

I can't give you hard numbers. I think the best way to handle a superhero cyoa would be capping powers to your "A-level". That even the most powerful person can still be countered by specific power(s), or by sheer force.

But the hardest part about making a superhero cyoa I would think is the actual powers. You need so many varied powers to appeal to everyone, balancing them will be insane.
>>
>>52963985
Yeah, clearly no one would stand up to the villains, people are cowards who never risk their life. I mean, look at real life - no one ever stops the criminals, they have scary knives and guns and fists. How could anyone ever stand up to them, even if everyone else is at the same powerlevel? That's impossible.
>>
>>52963017

I think one of the things you may want to look into is the basic psychological "reasoning" between making each kind of classical choice. For example:

Artiste: What kind of person would normally choose an option that would make them a "great artist"? Say you decide that this is the kind of somewhat pretentious person who believes that art itself is valuable. If asked, they'd say that contributing to the world of art and culture is their highest goal. Or perhaps that they "want to remembered", or know that they've "contributed to humanity". So make the drawback never being valued in one's own lifetime. You produce works which you know (literally, in this case) are great and would change culture but you'll never get to enjoy any of the fruits of your labor. For as long as you'll live all you'll experience is ridicule. This forces such people to ask themselves whether they really care purely about art for its own sake, or whether a small part of them really wants fame and fortune to go with it.

You may decide that people who choose Terminator are adrenaline junkies who want to live in an action film, or edgy fucks who think murder (and its assorted paraphernalia like guns and blades) is the coolest thing ever. If you decide on the first group, make the drawback that they're being hunted by some sort of nefarious organization who'll constantly threaten their lives - after all, what's the point of living in an action film without danger? For the second group I think the current drawback is actually fitting. You wanted to kill a lot of people, didn't you?

For the Hero: people with a savior complex or who want to be admired/worshiped/valued as heroic figures? Make the drawback that some sort of terrible threat to Earth shows up. An alien invasion, a rival superhero, something like that. Great power, great responsibility.
>>
>>52964025
What's the essential fantasy being fulfilled by someone who wants magic powers? That's a pretty fucking broad definition.
>>
>>52963992
Sorry. All I meant is I'm too cynical to think someone with these powers would use them to be a superhero, without doing it because they want the fame.
>>52964018
How many criminals do you know that can pull down a satellite ("S-level")? Who can suffocate you ("A-level")? Who can paralyze you with a glare ("B-level")?
Don't pretend that a knife is comparable to a power that could let you turn oxygen into uranium. You make a fool of yourself when you compare two things that cannot be compared.
>>
>>52963971
I think any super power setting is going to have to deal with the fact that human rights as envisaged during the enlightenment don't really work anymore.

Like, how do you possibly treat SAVIOR, the guy who can literally eradicate cancer across the entire planet with a thought and Bill, the hobo who just pissed himself, as equal in any meaningful sense? Even if Bill cleaned up his life and became a model citizen, there is a huge gulf in terms of how valuable he would be to society compared to SAVIOR.

The only model we have of a situation even remotely similar to that is having a Noble class, but even then the disparity was never as clear or wide. All current power structures are going to have a very hard time continuing their existence if supers suddenly sprung up, but liberal democracies in particular would be hardest hit i think.
>>
>>52964064
If Boku no Hero Academia taught me anything it's that the extreme literal hero worship that would take place in a supersociety would basically ensure a steady supply of wannabe heroes in it for the fame, money, etc.

Heroes would be the equivalent of movie starts, rock stars, and general celebs. That it's dangerous is irrelevant.
>>
>>52964064
Raising total powerlevel doesn't really matter, as just like criminals will have overpowered powers, their heroic opponents will have them too. Balance will remain the same.
North Korea hasn't nuked anyone yet, as there are other people with nukes who have something to say about it, though this is a bad example.
>>
>>52964072
I'm going to go full weeb, summon my meidoragon knowledge and say in such a society there would be basically 3 paths of thought.

1. Supers should protect and lead society, using their powers to guide humanity to a superior way of life.

2. Supers should destroy or enslave humanity, dispose of the old world order and redesign the Earth to suit its new apex leaders.

3. Supers should stay out of human affairs and live like spectators, NEETs, hermits, etc.
>>
>>52964101
Yes, that is the case in the very noblebright Hero Academia.
What happens when the number of villains steadily decreases? That's a plot point I don't think they ever dealt with and it does annoy me.
Look at all the Electric villains at the end of season 1. I think there's even a kid who asks him why they don't get an honest job as a generator.
It makes no sense to have an amazing power, and risk your life to be a villain (in a world where superheroes dominate).
>>52964117
>balance will remain the same
I don't agree. The level of destruction a villain can do increases drastically.
To use your scenario we go from an angry guy with a broken bottle for a weapon, to an AK47. He can do more damage to civilians even if the cops switch to guns too, instead of batons.

Yes, your example is bad. North Korea is a country. Firing a nuke takes time, and it can (possibly) be shot down.
Now imagine a guy on death row discovers he can create a nuke.
Before a hero can find him - and a hero who can survive being nuked - he will have murdered millions.

All it takes is one guy with a strong enough power.
>>
>>52964154
Your 1 and 2 are basically the same idea, with different levels of authoritarianism.

3 is going to run into the problems of being racist, being impossible to enforce, and pissing off a lot of people who can do stuff like juggle tanks and mindrape cities. It draws a line in the sand, says anyone who has powers is no longer human, and then expects those people to still act as if they're human.
>>
>>52964173
The random and late way Quirks manifest ensures there will always be heroes and villains. Look at Kaachan, top of the world ever since he was a kid, what if he had manifested a different Quirk, one like mind control? Would that have changed the way people treated him, made him bitter, and turned him into a villain? What if one of his bullying victims manifested a strong Quirk? How would that shape his personality?

The world is full of injustice. Assuming you can't predict strong supers and make them grow up in perfect bubbles, shaping them into heroes, there will always be villains.

I'm pretty sure that if I were to be given superpowers now, in my 20s, I'd become a villain in some people's eyes out of sheer cynicism even though I could live an easier life as a hero. Emotions aren't logical.
>>
>>52964215
Humans are irrelevant. I'm talking about these paths from the perspective of supers.

It depends on what you're going for. But Noble Dark presents the most opportunities for adventure. If you prefer super hero antics Noblebright might be a good choice. Neutralbright and some grimbright are for "comfy".
>>
>>52964439
That's the narrative, at least. There seems to be considerable disagreement with that in reality, though.
>>
>>52964364
>>52964385
I also like Brimbright, oddly enough. The idea of being a rank-and-file kind of soldier but in a setting where that isn't a shit job just seems really appealing, and I'm not even sure why.

If it could also manage to be Comfy on top of that, I think that'd be like, my ultimate CYOA.
>>
>>52964467
>Brimbright

Fukkin' typos! I meant Grimbright.
>>
>>52964364
The entire grim- side of the spectrum goes against the structure of CYOAs.

You laugh but Lovedagger IS the superior setting. No edgy bullshit, no endless space wars, etc. It's court intrigue and political romance of the highest level if done properly. I imagine that if such a series were to be released decades ago, it would be a hit.

>Nurgle's
>(aside from his diseases becoming less disfiguring and more of a Victorian "cough blood, be pale") aspect as the Lord of Entropy turns him, in the Lovedagger setting, into the Lord of Despair. As the ruler of emotional stagnation, he governs dark romances whose passion has died out, and both parties know it, but neither has the courage to kill so they all linger in unhappiness.

How can you not love this? It's like literally out of one of those old shoujo stories that are so sappy and overly dramatic you can't help but adore them.

Shitposting requires being alive, which requires some kind of attachment to life or something about it, which means that your will to live cannot be 0. There's still more initiative in shitposting than there is in being dead and thus doing objectively nothing, and choosing something over nothing (whether it's doing nothing or committing suicide) is a result of an exertion of will.
Even if your being alive is a result of not being able to muster up the willpower or effort to an hero, the fact that you chose one thing that entails living over another thing, no matter how bothersome, that entails not living means that you have some active will to live.

Depends on what direction you want to go with it, if the player is just taking a couple of options, in kind of a limited scope, maybe just have a party of female adventurers, and they need a healer, but since that's more of a "man's role" in their society, they've been looking for a healslut to tease.
Or pick one of a few waifus, (warrior waifu, cleric waifu, witch waifu, etc) and then have the rest of the cyoa focus on the player, so you can have an effective duo, and be useful for your waifu.
Or you could just build a party of waifus to accompany you, and be as powerless as Generic Isekai Main Protagonist #1374.

I think it'd be nice if we could pick our carer from a variety of options.

Like if you want to be an adventurer you can choose to go with the lady knight as her squire and work to keep her alive

If you want to live a comfy live you can go with the sister of a convent and assist her in her daily duties feeding the poor and converting others to the faith

If you want a life of gold you could join the female merchant and sail with her across the strange and exotic lands acting as a trader and shiphand as the situation calls for it

If you want something more dirty you can run off with an assassin and learn the tools of the trade from her killing political dissidents and petty lords for a hefty price

If you want a quiet life you could instead join the widow and keep her company on the farm tending to the livestock and watching the seasons roll past one by one as years pile up.

What might be a good drawback for the Athlete? My first thought was maybe to make so you have to lead a healthy life (can no longer enjoy junk food, etc.) but the whole point of the choice is getting the benefits of leading a healthy life without having to work for it. A drawback needs to be an aspect of the wish but it can't by itself invalidate it.

I don't see why the current drawback is so bad. You burn twice as bright twice as fast, what's wrong with that? It's not like actual high level athletes can expect to retain their abilities for too long. 25 years of godlike physique is more than the majority would get. It's enough to win 6 Olympics, for Christ's sake.
