Last time on Song of Swords:
Jimmy provides Mass Combat out of nowhere
Skills are being fixed complete with skill packets
Brian Blessed is always appropriate
The new Time Commanders was kind of garbage.
Praise Kek.

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. The Kickstarter was nearly 300% funded, and we're on the fast track to kicking ass baby.

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:
http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread.

We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room, but now we have a much better way to play Audatia: Tabletop Simulator! The (official!) mod for Audatia is now up and running!

How hard is SoS to learn? Is there magic? I've been intrigued by these threads since mid last year, it sounds interesting.

Magic is still WIP so at the moment the system works best for low fantasy with out magic or adding the magic from call of the void that is a bit more developed.

No non-humanoid ones, unfortunately. Basically if you want a decent simulation of a HEMA duel, this is the system to play, but for anything else it's not going to be great

A few. There's a basic monster system in Call of the Void, but things are very much based on the regular combat system right now. They want that absolutely down pat before expanding.

What is Ballad Spain like? Did they undergo a civil war like Spain did historically?
>>
>>52957322
Ciervosia, often called "Cervantes" by the Albish-speaking world. Yes, it underwent a terrible revolution following the assassination of their King by anarchist radicals. It is now a popular conspiracy theory that the King was actually killed by ultranationalists because he was considering abdicating his position voluntarily.

Regardless the assassination plunged the country into civil war as revolutionary Left-wing elements seized control of large parts of the country, and the military and Nationalist elements fought to bring order back to the nation. The resulting civil war did not last long, by this time the Volgin Socialist Republic was itself collapsing and could not meaningfully fund the rebels, while Chiron was very much able to assist them. The Legionary Party eventually emerged on top, and declared Anarchism and Socialist thought to be a genetic disease. Great camps were established in which many hundreds of thousands of prisoners were experimented on (fatally most of the time) to find a "cure" for the mental illness. Eventually it was decided that there was no cure, and the remaining stock were simply executed.

Today, Ciervosia is one of Chiron's closest allies, and has embraced a eugenics program almost identical to theirs, albeit with different parameters. As one of the few countries with which Chiron has no contested territories or political disputes, they are perhaps the only country that suffered no meaningful losses in CWII.

I've been thinking about this for a while, Jimmy, but I have finally decided. I believe either Pain is too effective, or Grit is too weak.
We can sit here and handwave about how damage soaked by toughness are effective fleshwounds or about how "pain" and CP are abstractions, but when it comes down it
Pain gimps people way too quickly.

It's intended behavior, I know, for the wounds to add up and lead to a death spiral. That part isn't where I draw contention.
It's with how quickly and readily that spiral can occur.

I've been chewing on historical reports of knights continuing to fight (and kill) while disemboweled, and on how many knife and bullet wounds it sometimes takes to even stop an attacker (let alone kill them), but what really cemented it was all of that coming together while I was watching MMA, and hearing about how the contender had three fingers on his main hand completely broken during round 1, but elected to continue the fight and went on to defeat the then relatively unwounded champion.

Shock does exactly what I want it to although my players complain bitterly about Overshock. But pain just adds up so quickly. A single level 1 wound is all that even a toughened soldier will be able to withstand before losing dice, and with the level of CP every character I have seen played has? The next wound, even another level 1, will decide the fight. 10 v 15 CP can be hard fought, but you're still going to lose.

This part doesnt feel right. I shouldn't be so in-pain from getting my knuckles rapped twice that I begin to completely falter in my competency, and the historical accounts of the *heights* of grit simply don't see any play in SoS as it is right now- although the depths of it are exactly how I'd expect.
Maybe it's because there's nothing like Spiritual Attributes, maybe it's just Grit being relatively ineffective compared to the common wound, maybe I'm just an idiot.
But these are my thoughts.

The funniest thing about Laser Whales is that the game is supposed to be about adventure in space and exploration, but 90% of the lore is about how fucking horrible and dystopian the countries that you won't ever see are.

SoS is an outlier of the Riddle game family because it lets wounds stack without restriction. I recommend reading BoB, Bovine, and Riddle/Flower of Battle to see how they handle things differently. Wound stacking, Pain, and Bleed are the three things you're looking for. Try them out with your players. If you find a good alternative to what we have now, tell us about it.

>often called "Cervantes" by the Albish-speaking world
Nigga why?
Your naming sense for Spanish countries is so fucking weird.

>>52960187
Literally none of that is accurate to real-world history.
The only part that's close is the part after the war is done where they persecute anarchists and socialists, and make friends with the nazis, but even there, there's details to quibble over.

>>52961011
I don't speak Spanish--my strategy for years now has been to use my name idea, and then wait for someone (like you) to correct me, at which point I change the name to fit the suggestions. That's how we went from Nisperoa to Nisperada.

Alright lads, the last thread iconic poll yielded pretty close love between the squire and Dwarven explorer. Have we any other ideas? If not we ought to start thinking of fleshing out the two favorites in terms of gear, style, and skills.

And then fecht them
>>
>>52963561
If this is for an Iconic Visionary slot, I'd recommend that we push a character who embodies our group well, but who also isn't so weird that they push people away. Premade characters are supposed to be easy to get into.

Personally, I'm surprised we didn't just default to Ohanedin Kenshiro. Possibly female. Aryan Elf musclegirl who does Wing Chun would be fucking based.
>>
>>52964414
Dion please, I know you have a build for this you love to trot out, but vomiting blood from every orifice doesn't make for a good campaign character.

>>52963561
The squire is attempting to be the chivalric ideal, so he'd be in heavier armor with a sword and lance as a minimum. The question that becomes from that is: how has that ideal been corrupted in his time away from home? What lands has he traveled to and absorbed lessons and acquired gear from during his exodus?

I like Jimmy's idea of incorporating a clover into his heraldry in some way; maybe he patrons ranchers?
>>

Alright gents I need some help cause I'm almost out of time. I'm a visionary noble backer for the KS and need to write up a character for the Lore bit that I get. Problem is I'm having a bit of difficulty writing something satisfactory and wrapping my head around the setting, and so I've come to you guys for help. As far as I've researched I know my idea is probably hard to pull off/write in a lore friendly way, which is part of the reason I'm asking for assistance. Continued in second post.
>>
>>52969385
Who and who?
>>
>>52969865
My basic idea is a possibly Karthak(i?) Zoph mage, who despite knowing it's wrong and incredibly dangerous, who is using necromancy and the undead to fight against some far greater threat (or using them to power a large portion of land... idk it was mentioned as an idea to me). But the basic idea is that he knows he's fighting a pyrrhic battle, and he knows that things are bad, and what he's doing is wrong, but that in his mind, the use of the undead abominations is the only way to stop this threat. Now the KS asks for all sorts of things like origin story, hopes/dreams, fears, habits, friends/allies, enemies, family, occupation, etc. and that's what I'm having trouble with. I also don't really know what threat in setting would constitute such dire measures. So I am here, asking humbly for help /tg/. I look forward to working with you gents.
>>
>>52965716
>Nice. Is the combat rules hard to learn,
With one of us teaching you, no.
On your own, yes.
The system is set up so that it's easy enough to understand that you could pick it up while watching a fecht play out on /tg/. That's how most of us got into it, watching John Galt's fechts and eventually realizing what was going on. Now with someone teaching you in the roll20 you can learn how it works real quick.
However, Opaque are terrible at writing books, so if you try to learn how the game works only from reading the PDF, you'll be entirely confused. Why it's laid out so you have a maneuver list before learning how maneuvers work is beyond me.
>>
>>52969865
>>52969907
I'll save us both many hours of second-hand autism by reading your idea directly. Bones and Claymore handle the art side, but I can pressure them into pretty much anything.
>>
>>52969991
Uhm. Thanks? What does this mean for my KS input? Because I still need to put something in for my backer tier and there's another step after this one.... Sorry to bother you?
>>
>>52970391
Relax mate, he's just saying he'll read it and you don't have to worry.
>>
>>52970391
What I mean is, do not worry about expressing yourself, we will absolutely take as much time is necessary to talk everything out. A fear many of you guys have expressed is that we might move too fast and not listen to you fully, and end up getting the wrong impression.

I promise, that will not be the case. Art takes fucking forever, that means we have tons of time to discuss details with our clientele.
>>
If I wanted to run a high lethality one-shot for a group of PC's taking part in a castle siege would this be a good system to do so?

>>
>>52965716
>is there more a basic fighter guy can do than "I hit it"
How do you want to hit it? Is the key question, as you have to pick where and how hard you're hitting things, whether to stab or thrust, feint to different attacks, chop shields, knock blades out of the way, push cut, half-sword, murderstrike, hook people or their equipment etc.

For the record, I don't consider the Nazis to be any more or less evil than the other major powers of that era. Communism, Crony Capitalism and Fascism are all equally guilty. The specifics may vary but I really don't care what excuse a country gives for its mass executions. A dead man is a dead man is a dead man. It doesn't matter if he died of Typhus retconned to choking on Xyklon B or died crying for his mommy in the basement of the Lubyanka building. Murder is murder.

Also after reading through the PDF I saw an infection system and was wondering if there would be any plans to implement a disease system?
Although as a player and DM I feel like it would not be very satisfying to lose a character to a plague, any tips for making the risk of disease more engaging?

Undead aren't really an accidental thing in SoS's home setting. They're products of intentionally corrupted spiritual fire in each organism capable of sustaining one. I suppose a magical disease or plague could result in undead but I'm not really sure how you would combat it as a player without magic of your own. Perhaps certain herbs or rituals could cleanse you of the infection, or divine help. As for how undead are a threat in SoS it's simple. They. Will. Not. Stop.

Undead suffer no pain or bleed, are insanely hard to actually kill (usually requiring abssolute destruction) and never get tired. To a man in armor a single weak undead may not be a threat. But two, three, fifteen? They'll overwhelm him, that's not taking in to account the fact that as undead age, corrupt and kill more they become smarter and more powerful. PC level undead have all the benefits of undeath and average or better intellect anf ability to use weapons, armor and tactics.
>>
>>52983320
I noticed the hard to kill thing, does that mean that beheading a zombie or destroying its brain doesn't seem to stop it. I imagine that unarmed/unintelligent zombies would probably rely on grappling and biting to actually grin someone down, but even an armored character knocked prone doesn't seem like they'd be in too much trouble with a zombie pounding on them, unless I don't understand how the damage is calculated.
>>
>>52981204
Is this an actual thing, or is it one of those gamergate things where someone just comes up with a conspiracy condensed into one meme filled text wall picture?
>>
>>52984023
I haven't heard of it, but a company hiring someone who used to work for a merxenary unit would be very easy to prove, and doesn't sound to unusual desu.
>>
>>52983984
The issue is that the weakest undead is in olympian territory when it comes to strength, approaching and surpassing he physical human maximum as they progress. 8 strength is where the damage model kind of begins the breakdown, making you a threat to plate armor without anti-armor weapons like polearms. Grappling an entirely untiring and physically superior opponent is even worse, the undead can just throw all of its dice at you every round without much fear of reprisal, why does it care if you hit it? It doesn't feel pain and only takes half shock. Its only purpose in unlife is to cause misery and death. When grappling it gets it strength in additional dice to act with, meaning it is pretty likely to break bones, strangle you or throw you so hard its like you fell off a building. That is only one, undead are rarely alone. So while the one has you grappled and is breaking your arm with agonizing slowness and inevitability, the other one is cackling in your face as it lifts your helmet and slowpushes a dagger through your mouth. Undead are terrible man.

That's because it is. In kind of romantic way of looking at lovecraftian gods, I guess.

Genosus demands work from you. You do not get to choose. You are, by definition, a slave to his will, a worker with no other purpose than build his monument, until he leaves leaving you in the void of darkness.

Boccanadessia owns you, like one would own a flower. The moon is the garden where you will forever be held, in form of a flower, singing along with her song until the day she decides to pick you up, or until Boccy leaves the garden to die.

And in lovecraftian fashion, they aren't the end all of gods. There is something bigger that they belong to. So, at any moment, that something bigger could command the sun and moon to leave this world, leaving everything in it to void with no light or song. And that's when the dark watchers will descend into the world.

Just tweak the stats if you want it to be a bit less ridiculous. Right now the undead are the opposite of what they usually are, they'll fucking stomp weaker characters.

In most Zombie fiction the key to defeating the zambambos is planning. Zombies are only dangerous if they ambush you. Here though, they'll kick your fucking ass even if they see you coming unless you have serious firepower or high levels of martial skill. I'd say reduce their CP and mobility dramatically.
>>
>>52988839
Don't start them at STR 8. Go with 5 for normal zombies and 6-7 for extra nasty ones, like fully armored zombie men at arms.
>>
>>52988839
>>52991254
>>52991355
What these guys said. It is also a matter of if you want to do away with the durability system too. Make it so that any wound with the dead effect to the head will kill them if you want brain zombies. You can also just play them a little dumber, make them easily escaped and avoided in small groups. The scary thing about zombies in most horror media isn't physicality but their alien nature and the fear and panic of people around them.

Make your players and their companions make fear tests and what not. They should be worrying about the macro game with an undead outbreak, keeping them away from cities and keeping the population calm. Keeping infrastructure working and shit.

>>
>>52992899
One of the biggest complaints about the weapon list is that the average person doesn't know what some of the more obscure weapons are, or when they're appropriate. A perfect use of the wiki would be to provide a picture of a weapon along with a rough period and location of usage.

Very much in line with Jimmy's religious philosophy. "A 19th century land surveyor loses his mind over the colours out of space, a 14th century peasant just gets out of the way."

It's a very occult way of looking at religion. Of course God is a monster, have you ever been outside? The whole world is monstrous. Religion is about contextualizing the monstrousness of the universe so that it is acceptable.

Which has more fun crossover potential?

People/polities from Tattered Realms in Blue Rose or people/polities from Ballad in Blue Rose? You could have a fleet of UCUC vs Chiron fighting a proxy war to influence the world. Or some renaissance kingdoms with equally foreign ideas trying to split up the world between them?

I'm thinking of Blue Rose since it's where the Palinka Effect comes from and because it's a very utopian setting, in contrast to Tattered Realms and Call of The Void.

I made a Mage and Acolyte classes that fit with my own setting. Since the Tattered Realms have that cool Pyromancy and Sorcery thing I don't think it would fit.

I based the mechanics for Mages on a 15 or so year old Korean MMO I loved as well. I just made a few schools of magic that you can pay proficiency to get easier and cheaper training at it, and after paying a certain amount of arc and school prerequisites you can get to advanced professions, like Elementalists, Pyromancers, White Mages, etc. So in the end it's more of a thing to fit my own desires for a low power magic system than something that would actually benefit SoS

On this same subject, I served in the Marine Corps in Iraq. Entire divisions were outfitted woodland camo. In a desert. It's pretty embarassing when the Germans in WWII, who were starving to death in some places, were able to outfit their men better than what is ostensibly the wealthiest nation on Earth with the largest military budget by a factor of 5.

A part of this is actually intentional. Part of the USMC's internal narrative is that it is the underdog, the brass never assigns enough resources to the corps. Except it does. It absolutely does. But most of that money is deliberately wasted so that the Marines don't come in under budget, because Republicans cut funds if you come in under budget. The Republicans have a fetish for the USMC, so this is one area where they overlook wastefulness because muh patriotism, but only to a certain point. So the corps wastes 5 billion dollars worth of ammunition at the end of every fiscal year, but they don't splurge on uniforms and such because these are considered peripheral expenses, and thus frivilous.

I imagine militaries in Ballad, which fight actual wars against actual opponents, do not have this funding problem. Camouflage would be considered a high priority. I'd actually really like to talk to Jimmy about this subject because hte setting seems very interesting when it comes to camo, I'm curious about how lighting works there, each island has its own sun? Is most "light" actually starlight? It'd be cool to think about that.
>>
>>53022652

>>
>>53022701
That's mostly banter. It's just grunts shitting on officers because most of them are college grads with high-minded ideas. The older officers get, the more the guys like them because of the hero-worship culture. Look at how people idolize fucking Mattis, it's almost a parody at this point.

>>
>>53022966
I wouldn't call it that, none of the officers get a kickback or anything, they're just aware that if they come in under budget, the budget might be cut, and the way the requisition system works is retarded because bureaucracies are always retarded. You can't explain to senators that the costs vary depending on what's happening that year, they can't put that on a ballot. It's easier just to use all the spare budget in firing drills and stuff.

Corruption would be if the officers were selling guns on the side or something like that, and the brass takes that very seriously. Only the CIA is allowed to do that.
>>
>>53023042
One thing that's almost corruption though, is that every branch basically embezzles funds for secret R&D. The Air Force is by far the most guilty of this, they've been developing shit under the table for decades now, and they get away with it because the produce results. The Corps doesn't really do that, or if they do it, they don't produce anything cool so they don't get credit for it.

I'm sure the Navy does this too, but the Navy is a fucking black hole of information. Trying to figure out what the US Navy is doing is like pulling teeth out of a duck. There's nothing to grab onto and if you manage to pull something out nobody will believe it was real anyway.

It's the social climate. People only cared what whiny tumblr types thought for a very brief time between 2012 and 2016. Then they gained enough cultural capital to humiliate themselves with massive cringey SJW nonsense (I dislike that term but it's a colloquialism), so now now the dominant internet culture is very much swinging towards the sort of irreverent nu-right iconoclasm that le edgy nazi jokes represents.

Also look at Easton himself, the guy wears "X against Racism" T-shirts, as though anyone except Andrew Anglin believes racism is a good thing. It's like saying "X against Chemical Fires," no shit everyone hates chemical fires. It's pure virtue signalling, but even he is willing to try to get into the Pewdiepie market despite the Nazi jokes. Just goes to show that practicality outweighs idealism every time.

Hell look at me. I'm on /tg/, a board with an EXTREME resistance to /pol/ ideas and I've gotten away with saying all sorts of hideous stuff as a joke. The narrative that le SJW menace has the power to punish people for being funny is dead, the worst you get is some dipshit Antifas showing up at rallies and getting the shit beaten out of them by dudes dressed like Spartans, and what does that impact anything we do? It doesn't. They have no power. The only constraint on people like us now is our desire not to turn our businesses into cringey soapboxes to preach politics. I certainly don't want to do that, and I doubt anyone else does. As long as you aren't trying to use your fun game as a way to brainwash people I don't think it matters what you say anymore.

Wish the people running the internet would just get with the program already. We're dealing with society-wide Streisand Effect right now and it's only going to get more embarrassing for the doofuses who think they can police what people say and think as time goes on.

Couldn't you at least imagine me as something interesting, instead of a cartoon character? I should be like a David Icke-tier conspiracy theorist. SoS is actually my vehicle for revealing the lizardman infiltration of our government to you impressionable young people.

You know I was super into Kropotkin when I was 20, I'm actually secretly an Anarchist. It was all a long ploy!

I feel like it's more of both, the sjw types are firmly entrenched and proselytizing in the colleges which naturally leads to more people taking that opposition stance when normally they'd be more moderate. Personally I really like to troll the ultra progressive types with alt right statements, and I'm a freaking socialist.

I literally heard some nerdy white talking about how much he hated white people at a party last weekend. I interjected that some of my best friends are white, but I don't think he got the joke.

I think many people feel the same. I wonder how history books will remember this era of fad-ideology. Or, is this how it's always been?
>>
>>53049180
Some of that shit is also becoming less extremist, though. Like, go down to your local middle school and ask some of the new generation how they feel about pronouns and genders. They may sound liberal as fuck but a lot of times what it really boils down to is that they are fine with using "they" for a singular specific person (as opposed to a singular non-specific person, which has been common for centuries) and consider someone else's gender to be their own business.

Not really related, but at the same party I had some crazy hippy try to convince me that "Vikings fought Dinosaurs," no fucking joke.

Not, "the ancestors of the Scandinavian peoples might have had to combat and hunt megafauna," nope, "Vikings fought fucking Dinosaurs."

Good things and fun times only.

President refuses to step down. Here's the source of these images:
http://imgur.com/gallery/bBGCL
>>
>>53063548
Turns out that when your economy is going to shit and people have constant shortages of basic necessities, people will only tolerate you shrieking about how it's all the Americans' fault rather than actually making positive changes for so long.
>>
>>53063548
The entire country's economy was based around oil because their last president was a retard and their current president was a bus driver and they refused to diversify the markets instead using the funds to buy shit for themselves and gibs for the people to pacify them and nationalizing all of the industries that might've saved them and drove them into the ground by installing inept party apparatchiks in the place of actual professionals in charge of them. Then Fracking happened in 'Murica possibly threatening OPEC's stranglehold on oil production and the Saudis went "nope" and flooded the market to drive prices down in the hopes of killing the Fracking industry in its infancy but this destroyed the Venezuelan economy and now they're eating dogs.

So they're rebelling pretty hard because they don't want to starve to death and there are only so many dogs in the country but the police are all drawn from the Party so they're loyal to the government so the retarded system is now collapsing. Good times.
>>
>>53063740
Mind, fracking in America isn't why Maduro (and Chavez before him) constantly bitch about and blame them; they just spin up sensationalist fiction about more general economic sabotage and spying and invasion plans.
>>
>>53063548
It might have something to do with that time they printed ~50 billion Bolivar in ~50 days at the end of last year.
>>
So did the AHCA go through?

>>
>>53063832
Oh sure, it probably wasn't what the Americans were trying to do either, an unintended side effect. I don't think anyone expected the Saudis to snap like they did.
>>
>>53063948
It has always struck me as hilariously perverse how revolutionaries who get in power just love to pretend that they're still revolutionaries.

What a meme country. It's like it was designed by a teenager playing NationStates.
>>
>when Americans riot we talk about how the tactics of the Venetian stick wars would be appropriate to modern political fighting
>when the Venezuelans riot we talk about politics and communism
Not sure what this means, if anything.
>>
>>53064531
We are an enlightened people, clearly.
>>
>>53064490
Was there something communistic about the Venezuelan regime?
>>
>>53064633
Actually more socialist, but the rhetoric and the whole "nationalize all important industries" things were pretty communist.
>>
>>53064513
Well it was, it has no value now. I think they've switch to the U.S. dollar and if I'm correct then the irony is getting insane considering at least one government press release called the monetary collapse a U.S. plot.
>>
>>53064531
There's no good footage, is the problem. American LARP-politics aren't the same as people who are desperately starving fighting the police, I think they're a bit hesistent to show the stuff, so we don't really know what's happening yet.

It'll never be as fucking bonkers as that mess in the Ukraine was. I remember Jimmy joked that he doubted anything would come of that. It's the only time he's ever been categorically wrong about a political prediction while I've known him.
>>
>>53064876
>I think they're a bit hesistent to show the stuff
Who's "they"? Footage from both situations is almost entirely from people on the ground, the mainstream media doesn't care much in the US and are actively suppressing it in Venezuela.
>>
>>53064876
Jimmy's mistake was probably because as an American, his knowledge of geography is very poor and so he assumed that Ukraine was a European nation, when in fact it is clearly an Asian one.
>>
>>53064975
Your mistake is assuming Ukraine is an Asian nation, when in truth it is the worst of all, a Slavic nation.
>>
>>53064513
Technically it's the Bolivar Fuerte. It was revalued from an older period of severe inflation in 2008.
>>
>>53065166
So the previous currency is the Bolívar Débile?
>>
>>53065154
Slavic nations also enjoy a spot of ice puck, so they can't be the worst.
>>
>>53065195
>coming soon for 2017, the bolivar mas fuerte

spelling's wrong I know but I don't know the codes for spanish accent marks off the top of my head

If you enable the international keyboard you can switch between that and the usual with the windows key and space bar.

Or 0768 is the combining character that works with any vowel.
