Alright, chaps! I need a character that can move aroudn the battlefield dancing and kicking ass while avoiding being interrupted by silly opportunity attacks.
I don't care the class, I don't care the multiclass, I don't care the build.
Chaps, build me a combat ballerina!
>>
What are some monsters that can make weird elder race beings for my science fantasy campaign. I already have Dao as crystal headed humanoids who seek to yank the wealth from worlds, and some Devils who are host to the largest crime syndicates in astral space.
>>
>>52879773
There are some that get unique options to where they don't really need them.
>>
>>52879773
Honestly I plan to either let ones that fit other official races have access, some of the Dwarf ones come to mind for Goliaths, or rework a couple to be similar but not copies.

Anons? I wanna convert the Phanaton for use in my homebrew setting: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Phanaton

Just how overpowered is this first draft?

Phanaton
Ability Score Modifiers: +2 Dexterity, +1 Wisdom
Size: Small
Speed: 20 feet, Climb 20 feet
Vision: Normal
Bred for the Treetops: You have a Climb speed of 20 feet and Advantage on Athletics checks made in relation to climbing and jumping.
Forest Ghosts: You have Proficiency in Stealth, and gain Advantage on all Stealth checks made whilst in forest and jungle terrain.
Fangs: When you make an Unarmed Strike, you can choose to bite your opponent. Biting causes your attack, on a hit, to deliver 1d4 Piercing damage. If you have the Martial Arts class feature, your bite attack uses your Martial Arts damage dice instead, although it is still Piercing damage.
Glide: So long as you are not Incapacitated, overburdened, or wearing medium or heavy armor, you can use your Reaction to Glide if you fall or jump off of a high place. Gliding negates all damage you would normally take from falling, and allows you to cover a horizontal distance of 20 feet for every 5 feet you descend.
>>
So I'm trying to figure out how to make the Undying Light Warlock work, but it seems pretty mediocre every way I look at it.

I mean, +CHA to Radiant and Fire damage seems pretty useful, until you consider that there aren't many Radiant spells and most Fire spells only hit once. Fire Bolt seemed the go-to cantrip, but unlike Eldritch Blast will only ever apply the CHA bonus once. Same with Sacred Flame and Radiant Hand.

>>52879936
Yes. One day we found them and killed them all. Then we went after Bahamut. And nailed him. And offered his heart to Tiamat, who ascended from her realms to burn the Astral and Material Planes for a thousand years.
And that's how our game ended horribly and we had to start a new one. A thousand years later.

>>52880062
A second +5 because fuck you that's why, the developers are throwing everything at us and seeing what sticks, until they vomit another PHB.
>>
I see everyone is interpreting Elven Accuracy to mean double advantage, but is that really what it's supposed to mean? I feel like they meant reroll the damage dice.

Is there any precedent for (effectively) rolling 3d20 and taking the highest?

So, once per short rest, a Half-Orc with this and GWM could do 5d12 + Str + 10 damage with a single crit? Without any class features.
Looks like I will be making my big-dick Half-Orc champion after all.
>>
>>52880045
Last thread autists were upset that some DMs give out advantage/disadvantage or let you auto pass persuasion depending on what you say.

They'd probably hate it even more if they knew I do other things so long as I can actually see the character doing it based off their stats.
>>
>>52880119

>>52880131
Well my Wood-Elf Barbarian might just be a good character now.
>>
>>52880119
It's the attack hit, if it was meant to reroll damage it would say so.

>Savage Attacker: Once per turn when you roll damage for a melee weapon attack, you can reroll the weapon's damage dice and use either total.

>Elven Accuracy: Whenever you have advantage on an attack roll, you can reroll one of the dice once.
>>
>>52880150
That's just stunting mechanics isn't it? I could see it working. As long as it's not required or anything, I play a guy who has 18 charisma when I only have like 11 for a reason.

I made a homebrew class that I put up here a month or two ago. I got a bunch of critiques and I think I've improved the class with them

There's new archetypes, rebalanced spells, and what was there before has been overhauled somewhat
>>
>>52880245
No its not wrong. Play a character you find interesting rather than a character that is "good".
>>
>>52880245

The Aboleth are the great seeders of life, they come down, when the worlds are young and covered in dark and warm seas. And they build their cities in the depths.

The various slave species, foodstuffs, and experiments sometimes lay fallow, especially when a colony collapses. And they grow to take over their worlds. Even adapting to land to take over the uninhabitable dry parts.

One time we saw Bahamut get stabbed like a punk ass bitch in a divine tavern. We also met his mom and his long lost brother, who were also platinum dragons because our DM wasn't terribly original.

Ironically, we never actually met a normal metallic dragon, even though dragon worship was main religion of the region. We literally met more dragon gods than actual dragons.
>>
>>52880430
No, because the "you must attack or take damage" timer starts at the wrong time for you to want to do this. When you rage, you want to attack or take damage before your next turn starts. So on your next turn, if you stopped raging at the beginning of that turn, it's too late to refresh your rage anyway.

I think this bit of homebrew is ready for a dry run if anyone's game. Mostly, I want to see if the damage output is what I expect, and whether the CR adjustment I have in mind is appropriate. No RP or fluff for this go around, just good old fashioned number crunching and dice rolling. Initial tests on my own seem promising, but there's no accounting for a player's mindset. Hence this test.

If you're interested, drop me a line on Discord (ELH#5618) and we'll figure out a good time to sit down and do it.

How do these racial feats work? Do they replace one of the basic racial feats you get when you select your race or do I take them as normal feats when I level up?
>>
>>52880845
>Io

So this is something I get a bit mixed about. Io got cut in half and became Bahamut and Tiamat. Is Io somehow not dead after that? I mean I would understand since gods are sometimes incomprehensible but I haven't heard.
>>
>>52880870
Normal feats, you swap an ASI for them or take one as a variant human start.
>>
>>52880893
Are you questioning the overpower of the overpowered Io, mortal?
>>
>>52880870
If by "basic racial feats" you mean your racial features, then no. They work just like any other feat.
>>
>>52880925
I'm not questioning it. I seek to understand.
>>
>>52880893
Even though Io was clearly killed and divided into smaller chunks in that engagement, Io is the patron of the Draconic Pantheon in perpetuity, and could not be written off as "Dead" and continues to still grant spells and prayers to its clerics. It is likely that the other dragon gods are simply emanations of Io rather than being wholly separate entities themselves.

Published adventures off the top of my head that use Persuasion/Deception.
Lost Mine of Phandelver: Negotiating with Yeemik for the hostage
Princes of the Apocalypse: Convincing the Druids to fight the Bugbears
Hoard of the Dragon Queen: Reminding Talis of your friendship
Sunless Citadel: Lying to Yusdrayl about the fate of the dragon

If you don't get XP for bypassing combat by talking (rolling dice or just using reasoned arguments), then you are playing badwrong-nofun.

There is an Epic Tier Quest in the 4e Dragonborn supplement book that has the player either retrieve the hearts of both Bahamut and Tiamat and combine them, or convince one to devour the heart of the other. This will cause Io to be restored.

How rare are archers in your games?

>>
>>52881226
Yeah, that was my reaction. My favorite part was when we had to spend multiple sessions convincing the various sects of the dragon religion to stop quibbling over vague doctrinal issues.

I have to admit, though, it was kind of funny when the Bahamut sect's issue was that Bahamut wasn't talking to them enough. It turned out he was basically too busy getting hammered at the god bar to pick up their calls.

I envy you. Every rogue I've played with has either been a halfling obsessed with stealing from every NPC and sometimes other players. The worst by far was a kitsune assassin back in 4e.
>>
>>52881825

I wish paladins didn't have that shit associated with them. When there's a player that actually knows how to paladin they should be cherished.

And often when its not edgy 'I'm above the law!' its stupid in the exact opposite way - cheesy 'I can never kill anyone!' Neither of those is right.

Jesus christ. I can see why you would be wary of them. It makes me sad that not enough people play Rogues that understand "Gee, we just got a pile of gold from that dungeon but I'm going to rob this guy for 2gp cause I'm a Rogue, lol". At least the downtime rules give a reasonable course of action for if they want to rob someone.

>>52881886
Very true. Not enough people realise that a Paladin is like a Lawful Good Fighter that tries to do his best and follows and Oath. As long as you try your best to do what's right, are willing to admit when you're wrong and follow your god damn Oath then you're a good Paladin.

I find it a shame not enough DM's are willing to punish people for breaking their Oath. I understand no one likes hearing "You fucked up and lost your class" but if they completely break it multiple times they should lose it.
>>
>>52881928
See I don't get how it can be so hard. As a paladin, there is a time to talk. And there is a time to fight. Tongue. Sword. Tongue. Sword. You're supposed to know that you can do both and when either is appropriate. That bit is supposed to be why you deserve the powers of your oath.

>Proper authorities

How about the ones that get tied up on thinking they have to obey the unjust laws of a land... because its the law there? No matter how corrupt the ones who made it are.

Especially if its because the paladin is lawful good. You're Lawful GOOD. You believe that the law is good, and good is the law. If its not good... then its not the law.

I am loving the downtime rules.

Especially the DC 2d10+5 ones. Pit fighting and gambling. You know what you are getting into, but can't guarantee anything.

I wonder why they put that in order to gamble a week away, you need to put at least 100 gp down. That is two years wages for a skilled laborer.

You still need to cover lifestyle expenses during that.

Sort of new to 5e. What is the rule for characters switching weapons in combat? How my friends and I have house ruled it was (for example) going from a ranged to melee weapon was free but you couldn't draw your shield or off-hand weapon for free until the next round. If you wanted to fully equip with both hands, it would cost your action.

What is the normal practice though?

>grapple rules + jump rules
How does that work?

Grappled: Speed goes to 0.

High Jump: 3+Str, if you can move 10 ft. (3+ Str)/2 if you can't.

So, you lift someone up with a standing jump, and then what?
>>
>>52880838
That looks like what the leucrotta (sp?) should've been, fuck the horrendous art in Volo's. Good work.
>>
>>52882692
4e is... closer to a video game RPG than a tabletop one in most of its mechanics. I didn't look deep into it until recently, and I've played so many fucking games that the rules were immediately familiar.

And there's a lot of tabletop players that are/were butthurt about video games. And then right when people were trying to process this... it came. Pathfinder. 4e lead to its creation. But the poor thing didn't mean to.
>>
>>52882798
When you grapple someone your speed if halved. This means you have 15ft of movement.

Play a Goliath and make your height 8 feet and you only need to jump one foot to slam someone.

You can jump 1 foot 15 times per turn... for 15d6 damage and a free prone at level 1.
>>
>>52882798
But YOU can move at half speed, so you can use your speed to do a running jump and cause fall damage and prone status to a foe that's shorter than you.

Then it has to use an action to either get out the grapple or having disadvantage and if he breaks he has to use most of his movement on standing up...
>>
>>52882798
You're not Grappled (the condition) while grappling.

That said, while dropping people from high up is get them prone (in addition to some damage depending on distance), so it's little different from using Shove to push them to the ground. Unless you're built for super high jumps, in which case the damage can be meaningful.

>Falling
>A fall from a great height is one of the most common hazards facing an adventurer. At the end of a fall, a creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it fell, to a maximum of 20d6. The creature lands prone, unless it avoids taking damage from the fall.

You need to jump at least 10 ft up, or you have pulled the foe onto your shoulders. Grappling just means your tussling with someone. You can't even jump that high, using the usual jump numbers. 3+Str = 10 requires 24 Strength, in a system that caps off at 20 in all abilities (barring magic).

You're 8 feet tall and according to the PHB you can lift things above your head equal to half your height.

You lift him up and he's 12 feet in the air and then you just need to jump 1 foot to slam them.

"When you move, you can drag or carry the grappled creature with you". Carry means you can literally carry the creature as long as they're a lower weight then you can life (Thank you Powerful Build).

Same as Nuclear Druid in the "No DM will let you do this" but with pure RAW there's nothing stopping you.

Honestly as long as you realise the Character has to be able to lift the enemy with their carry weight it doesn't seem as bad.

Against humanoids or orcs, yeah it'll fuck them 9 ways to sunday. Against anything where you don't expect the party members to be killing 1 enemy a turn at least then it's likely too heavy to lift.

The game might not give monster weight but I'd rule no on bears, small dragons and other real threats.

>>
>>52882842
To be fair, the most common video game meme for 4e is based on a misunderstanding of the rules. Stupid people think that because every ability is well defined combat wise, they can't use them outside of combat. I played a lizardman barbarian that was amassing enough gold to buy his own swamp, he had planned to live the rest of his days lazing around in the murky waters.
>>
>>52883076
>Push, Drag, or Lift. You can push, drag, or lift a weight in pounds up to twice your carrying capacity (or 30 times your Strength score). While pushing or dragging weight in excess of your carrying capacity, your speed drops to 5 feet.

So, a goliath might be able to have the carrying capacity to not have their speed drop (because lifting up a foe should slow you down).

No direct ruling on if lifting a foe takes an action, but considering that the grapple took an action, and pulling a lever (use an object) eats your action, lifting should be an action.

So, congratulations. Two actions, for probably two turns of combat, for 1d6 (no modifiers) bludgeoning damage. Oh, and they might win the grapple contest, or try to escape. And it only really works with tall PCs (goliaths). Jumping up for the suplex can add 1d6 damage, if you somehow boost your jump height to 10 ft, which would normally require 24 Strength.

>>No direct ruling on if lifting a foe takes an action, but considering that the grapple took an action, and pulling a lever (use an object) eats your action, lifting should be an action.

This is where the whole issue with it comes in. Obviously this isn't RAI, no one could argue that 15d6 damage at level 1 is a reasonable thing.

RAW, Rules as Written, the rules in the book. There is nothing saying you can't lift your grappled target above your head with no action. They have never clarified it requires an action.

No DM will let you use this but from a purely RAW perspective there's nothing stopping you. We're talking about RAW and you've just made up some new rules to counter argue. Your rules a good and I agree with them but they're not RAW.

Some things don't use your action, but your bonus action, or none.
And what uses it or not is decided by the DM.
Who will probably say what you said.

"You normally interact with an object while doing
something else, such as when you draw a sword as part
of an attack. When an object requires your action for
its use, you take the Use an Object action. This action
is also useful when you want to interact with more than
one object on your turn."

No.
A search action means they have already lost sight of you and are trying to find you.
A contest like this means that the foe is aware of you being here and is trying to keep track of you, as defined in contests (PHB 174).
>>
Warning: autism incoming.

Is rolling for your HP upon level up a meme? From my understanding, seeing as how this is literally the only point in the game where you're allowed to round up, you should always take the average.
Just take a bard level up as example, hit die is a d8.
>Take expected value of 4.5, round up to 5 by default
or
>Roll a 1, 2, 3, 4. Get worse outcome
>Roll a 6, 7, 8. Get better outcome
>Roll 5. Get equivalent outcome
The way I see it, there's a 50% chance of getting a worse outcome, and a 37.5% chance of a better outcome, and a 12.5% chance of equivalent outcome.

Would it be disingenuous to add the 12.5 and 37.5 to say there is a 50% chance of "equivalent OR better outcome"? I ran some stuff through Excel and it seems like you should always take the expected value rounded up.
>>
>>52884031
The opposite. Rolling 5-6 times (once per each PC or enemy on the field) everytime something hide is a mistake. WotC know that and that's why they develop passive perception system.
>>
>>52884048
Fuck and of course I mess up on something simple... That should be 28=8+5+5+5+5

Good DMs will allow their players to roll hit dice, and then take the average if it's higher. This gives them a reliable increase in hp, so they can handle appropriate CR monsters, but adds a sense of fun and excitement to leveling up. (within approved boundaries, of course, see DMG)

Good plan. Between CON being better then DEX and not really needing a high STR I'm actually surprisingly not as starved for ASI as most Barbs. My DM allows level 1 feats so I'll pick up Elven Accuracy and start with something like this.

15, 14, 15, 8, 13, 10 and then up STR and CON at 4. After that I pretty much just pick up Dual-Wielder with my next ASI and the rest in CON.

> who dislike 5e because it's very boring and it doesn't offer the level of customization that say, 3e offers
Are they actual retards by any chance?

Sure, the 3ex's offer a level of customization but you literally have to wade through a staggering amount of shit, non-options, options that actually hamper and weaken you and way overpowered options, which basically amounts to a similar number of options offered by 5e, with the added condition that 5e's options actually work as intended out of the box.
>>
>>52884315
So, 3.pf faggots.

Typically they think dnd was always excel spreadsheets and tier lists and that powergaming is the norm for every group. Get out while you still can.

Also you totally can powergame in 5e, it just isn't as bloated like 3.pf is. Tabaxi, GWM, 2h paladin, etc.

>I'll just walk over to this tree to get sneak attack after being seen.
It's not exactly that anon I'm hiding as well. What if there are more trees or potential locations I could have hidden why would they suddenly know I'm at that exact tree? If we allowed an active perception check what's the point of the search action if your making it so they can be done on other players turns? Also, that would highly weaken the hide action in general.
>>
Does anyone else throw situations at their PCs without any clear solution in mind?

this game is not balanced around magic items, they are either a commodity or a plot hook. it doesn't matter how useful a magic item can be, it can't exist on its own, by its own merits, it necessarily must serve some purpose to the dm.

on the other hand, dark souls rings are part of the player agency to achieve it's goals, and they can venture to get them without anyone's else consent, hence serving an entirely different purpose for the game, even if they serve a similar purpose for the character.

How would you emulate a shadow priest?

I'm torn between a warlock and trickery or death cleric.

Yeah he said that if anything all the features a Monk gets that require Monk weapons should say "When you use a Monk weapon or a Kensai weapon".

In going through the MM to find a good-aligned dragon for my edgelords- I mean party, to fight, I came across the Gold Dragon. Their weakness breath essentially makes you have disadvantage on STR saving throws, then somehow expects you to succeed on one to get rid of the effect. That can't be right, can it? No other dragon breath double dips like that.

Well, yeah, it's pointless to post home brew because provided there's an equal level of understandimg, people will arrive at the same conclusions regarding mechanics. So people will just come up with the same shit on their own if they need it for their games. I'm just killing time here before the next thread came around, which it has now.

I'm pretty sure higher level monsters are made with the intent that the party has some magical weapons with them or else all those resistances completely fuck the martials.

>Aetherborn

>Second Sight
>+1 Wis
>You gain the ability to sense the 'essence' of creatures nearby. You can determine the position and type of creatures within 30 feet of you. This applies even through walls.

>Aetheric Vampire
>+1 Con
>In place of eating and drinking you can use an action to choose to devour the aether of a living or recently deceased, no more than 5 minutes, creature. You do not devour its soul or any such but the physical bindings of a creature (I don't know MtG lore, correct me if wrong) reducing the creature's body to ash once complete. Gain temporary HP for one hour equal to the hit die of the devoured creature.

>Decadence
>+1 Cha
>You gain advantage on all Cha based rolls when appearing or in an environment of excess or luxuriance as well as advantage on carousing rolls.
Should I be saving these or naw?

Golds are the equivalent to Reds, they're the mack daddies of metallic dragons and not to be trifled with under any circumstance.
>>
>>52886144
Yep, that's what it is. Just gotta hope you roll well on both rolls.
>>
>>52886196
You're writing them, it's up to you if you feel like you've been putting enough effort into them to save em or not. Might as well in case somebody pops in two weeks from now and goes "anybody got those home brew racial feats somebody was posting"

How does one get resistance to water/earth/air damage?

Hmm
Ice
Bludgeoning or force
Lightning/Thunder.

I've never played D&D before but I find myself in the position of Dungeon Master for my group of friends (who also have never played D&D before). I'm still in the process of planning our first campaign, and all the guides and tips I read say start small, but my group isn't really interested in starting small and wants to jump into something big (they want to do the Tyranny of Dragons campaign). Can I handle something like that if I've never done anything like this before? It's a lot to take in, there's so many more rules than I thought and I'm using up all my free time just trying to memorize the important parts of the manuals.

Don't memorize. Get a one page cheat sheet and go from there.

Me and my friends started 5e with LMoP, but dropped the game due to bad DM.

My friend decided to DM with HoTDQ, he handles it very well, biggest mistakes I could point out are things like giving wrong checks (Perception instead of Investigation) and letting players stay on the same tile of combat, no biggie.

Just play with the PHB/DMG at your side and you should be fine.
Best hint I can give is to tell your players to not go rule-lawyering midgame, it's better to play wrong and get stuff done than halting the game to discuss rules (i.e. same tile on combat was fixed next session).

Also, somehow WotC thought making a bunch of combat inside Greenest was a good idea, if you're playing online, be sure to get some extra maps, like this one: http://imgur.com/a/Qjszl

Thanks I'll watch for that.

I figured as much, cause nobody is expecting a perfect play-through for the first campaign, but I'll be sure to move things along if people start pulling out the manuals for every little thing.
