Never played a possessed character because possessed characters are played by the DM. It was not fun, because my character was possessed by a demon and TPK the entire party.

This is my thought. Like it's you, you're present and conscious, but for one reason or another you've been forced or otherwise persuaded to act against your own interest. You have become an obscene joke of your former self, deriving pleasure out of something that should cause you horror. Like being a cuck.

Yes and no. In the end run it depends on the player. Do you trust this player to accurately play as his possessed character. If no, you're going to sadly play the possessed character yourself (since the new being is now in control of the body). However, if you do trust the player, then they can do the heavy lifting.

Take the traditional form of possession, like the girl in the exorcist. We think about her actions as being purely controlled by the demon. But let's look at it another way. She is conscious, she is aware of and even (as we can see) derives pleasure from her actions. The demon isn't jacking into her body and controlling every thought, it's more suggesting a different, admittedly drastic, change of personality. Maybe there's been promises made, coercion, both, but the character makes these choices actively. When the spell is over they are inconsolable not just because they went through a horrible experience but because they were a willing participant.
Idk I was thinking something like that could work. kind of a twin peaks kind of possession.

Hmmmm, I get what you're talking about. You could speak the player secretly about the demon coercing/persuading them, and see if the player accepts what the demon is bargaining. You could also have the player make saving throws when it comes to decision. For example, the character wants to retire early for bed, but the demon wants to party hard the night away (after all, it doesn't get into the mortal realm that much). If the player succeeds in saving, they go to bed early (with maybe some grumbling in their head) but if they don't save, they instead get the feeling that "I'm not that tired and that barmaid looks pretty hot. Hmmmm some beer wouldn't hurt too" and then it can slowly spin out of control. The more times the player fails their saves, the harder it is too keep the being at bay.
