Does anyone think the Imperium is too big? No real "drama" possible.

>Oh no, thousands of worlds were destroyed!
>Who gives a shit?

On the one hand, I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for.

On the other hand, that doesn't mean it necessarily makes for a good story, so I agree.

That is the whole point of the universe.

The losses, the gains and the stakes are so high that it makes it seem illogical they can take it so easily and so lightly to lose a solar system, a fleet or an army.

It shows the dark nature of the universe. It says "Lives are worthless, all who enter despair and stare into the dying light" and sets the universe up for it's whole point: Shit is, has, continues to be (and will be) fucked.

It also provides a large enough universe to have the space to allow players to make their own armies and shit for the table top game. Along with leaving the writers and game makers to never worry about them writing the universe into a corner. Since they can say that shit is fucked and nothing has changed, they can do that as much as they want.

Still, it could be done better. They really need to get the numbers a bit closer to what would be possible and needed...

Are black crusades, huge WAAAGHs and tyranid fleets not real enough?

The death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic

The loss of a planet is a rounding error

Drama ranges in scale. Personal level dramas are just as compelling as global or galactic level dramas.
>>
>>52754510
they cant really write well, so they hope to get the 40kiddies excited by using big numbers
>>
Scale is a problem 40k's writers have no intention of solving, and it goes both ways.

>Siege of Vraks
>intended to be a bloody costly slog highlighting the brutal nature of the setting
>fewer military dead than the second world war in twice the time
>>
>>52754510
40K is all about overdoing things, OP.

>fewer military dead than the second world war in twice the time
They shame the Emperor with their slacking.

40k works a lot better if you ignore ANY numbers provided by gw that're attached to anything with a real value, i.e. thicknesses of armour, size of armies engaged in campaigns, that sort of thing, because gw (and fw) have no fucking idea what they're doing.

As an example, the old armageddon campaign book had a list of all forces involved in the back and if you added up all the guard deployed they came to something like 40,000 guys, which, in context, is about the same number of troops as new zealand put in the field for the italian campaign in ww2.

So, the best solution whenever a number/concept with inherent numbers is given is to ignore it, hope it's been attached to technobabble (megajoule or whatever) or hope, like Abnett has slowly done with the Ghosts, that the definition of whatever can be stretched, as the Ghosts are still a 'regiment' made up of 'companies' (nominally 1k-1200 men/10 coy.) but now seem to deploy in brigade strength with X number of companies as the story demands.

Like unit stats, points costs, or miniature price.

The whole point of the scale is that it means the galaxy is a big place with room for "your dudes" and custom stories that won't have an impact on the setting as a whole or feel out of place.

Also
>But the universe is a big place and, whatever happens, you will not be missed....
>>
>>52757678
They never really pose a threat though. The black crusades are always defeated, and while the Imperium loses X billions of people and Y thousands of worlds, it doesn't really make any difference.
>>
>>52754694
40K doesn't exist to tell a story.

The story is always going to be second to krumping the most gitz possible.

When it was first released, sure. You're in denial if you don't think they're desperately trying to create some pathos now, though, even if it mostly boils down to wanking over space marines.
