What does your character do for a living when adventuring isn't paying the bills?
>>
Ask the undead whether or not he could use their material possessions.
Act of charity = Religious pardon.
>>
he runs a business, but adventuring and risking your life is fun and the rewards potentially greater, so why not?

My last character was a punk rocker orc shaman Shadowrunner, so when he needed a place to crash and didn't have the cash, he would mind control women at clubs and get them to take him home, but outside of that he was a punk rocker, so he played gigs and made the crowd go nuts with his mind magic. That did him pretty well when he was sparse on the better paying jobs.
>>
>>52689426
Gets paid in advance, and the things he stabs aren't trying to stab everyone who enters their house.
>>
One would join a crime syndicate and work his way through the ranks

Another would settle down to become a full time blacksmith

The last would likely just die, they live to adventure cause they're obsessed with fame.

>>
>>52689426
Well, my last character would go back to pit fighting and maybe a little body guard work on the side. If he's offered than he will take any jobs for the local crime lords that require some muscle.

The one prior to that is a professional soldier, serving as a war wizard for his country. So he's got a job. If he's not being sent on a quest for his country then he's training others at the academy.

Before that, he's a scummy thief with a gambling problem. He probably just gambles his most recent haul and lives off the winnings. Always paying his thieves guild dues.

Prior to that, as a miner turned fighter he could probably go back to that life but would likely take up work as a caravan guard before returning to mining.

My Stone Sorcerer is a nobleman by deed, merged his house with another through marriage and adventures to discover the source of his power while his step father and wife run their lands. He doesn't need money, if he needs money while adventuring he can probably loan it from a local Lord with the promise of repayment.

One does mercenary work. He's since loosened up the definition of the word to include being a caravan guard, bodyguard, and that guy who beats on the fucker who slept with your wife.

When he's not doing that, he doesn't pay bills. Tax man doesn't know where his shack in the woods is, and he's content to poach the king's deer and fish in the king's river while he maintains nobody knowing where he is.
>>

Nothing, he set aside a personal stipend from the massive amounts of money he is making from killing vampires, because they turn into crystals when they die in this setting and those crystals are a primary ritual reagent and thus always in high demand.

But I bought a little kitty bed for him and everything! It'd be better than sleeping near the woods at the edge of town.

I don't have a character right now, so I'll talk about my players.

They took over a goblin fortress, poured tons of money into it, and started a hunter's guild. They pay bounties on dangerous monsters. The bounties are paid by the sale of monster meat. The players keep their loot there and go back when they want to train.

It's a very successful place, since now that the goblin lands are conquered, their fortress is sitting right on the new main trade route.

If he had to? Probably simple manual labor, really anything that was available.

Mostly though he trains. This involves hitting rocks a lot and incessantly practicing his martial arts in other mind numbingily dull ways. Which is fine because while dumb as a post, he is essentially the Forrest Gump of martial artists. He both enjoys the activity for itself, and if he gets bored (unlikely) he knows he HAS to train. This is not optional.

As a result, he has basic principals but he's the "lawful stupid" party member. His reaction to everything is very unnuanced and black and white. He will deliver the judgement of the heavens if this is appropriate. If action is needed he will not hesistate.

Also immune to many forms of subterfuge because he Trains and Delivers Judgement, and he's kinda dumb. You try to talk him into doing the wrong thing, he calls bullshit in a crude but basically correct fashion and punches you in the face. A lot.

If you go on adventures, you're an adventurer.

Doesn't mean you have to be a professional adventurer, but you're still an adventurer.
>>
>>52689426
I've 3 on the go at the moment:

One works as a cop, the adventuring happens around that.

The other's a paladin, of the hold no material wealth variety. so when not performing holy works he'd be supported by the church and or the donations of the faithful.

The last is a deranged killer who believes murder is the highest form of art, and I'm not sure the concept of bills even factors into his world view.
>" bills?, who can put a price! On 'my', ART! "
or something along those lines

My Shadowrun character worked a bunch of part-time jobs (mostly in a maid cafe), and ran a youtube channel where she talked about shadowrunning while wearing skimpy outfits.

Relying on a nearby church or something. He's a paladin knight-errant, not a businessman.
Besides, almost every church knows his order as the holy equivalent of spec ops commandos. They may be a little scared of the reputation, but there's no way they wouldn't spare a meal or a bed.

He's a low-ranking (almost) officer in the local militia. The pay isn't great, but food and lodging is provided.

So I guess he'd spend time there, perhaps trying to climb the ranks. If that doesn't work out, there's always the family farm.

He goes back to being a bodyguard for a minor noble or being what is essentially the sheriff for the town that noble owns
>>
>>52689426

This is why taking Survival as a skill is important. You just buy some hole with adventurer funds, don't bother with utilities because it's medieval times, and hunt your own damn food. And if you accidentally too much food, then just sell it to the butcher for a third what he charges, not like you need money anyway.
>>
He's a fur trader during his spare time, though he occasionally sells monster bits from kills too. He actually keeps a list of what seems to be in frequently high demand so he can get hold of it when the chance arises.

One character hires himself out as a bodyguard, bouncer, hired thug, mercenary, arena fighter, anything fighting related that isn't joining the town guard or local military. (NE Male Human Fighter)

Another just hunts and lives off the land (TN
Male Dark Elf Fighter), or at least he used to. These days he's so rich he could adventure for another thousand years, feasting and whoring every chance he gets and still not have to sell of any of his magic items.

Another heals the sick/wounded with his innovative magicks (CG Male Human Wizard, specifically a Hemomancer), or at least he used to before he became a vampire (complete accident I swear). He now feeds on the blood of those he has deemed guilty when he runs out of "donations" for his research/food stores.

My take on the halfling thief character owned a tavern/inn and ran it in his spare time. When he came back from a particularly lucrative adventure with enough money to buy the competition, I spent the rest of the session playing monopoly rather than DnD.
His tomb is a pyramid made of platinum btw.
