A 2/2 for 2 that shocks your opponent for activating non-mana abilities.

Who the hell decided that this casting cost was okay? Even 2R would have been a better argument than this.

Especially considering the top decks in standard that rely on activated abilities of artifacts

>>
>>52675147
Bruh, if your opponent doesn't remove him immediately, this WILL deal 4-6 damage through fetches to your average deck, not even counting any other activated abilities. Either you have a must-answer creature to get your opponent's removal out, or you have a super fast clock.
>>
>>52672854
We gonna see a rise in Boros Burn over Naya because of this? You'll want to cut down on the number of fetches in your deck for facing it in the mirror after all.

>>52676805
When he was doing his pilgrimage he was throwing the gold around for charity. The egyptians didn't rip him off, but he did wreck the value of gold across the sahara, so he bought it back with interest to try and fix it. Then a lot of the gold ended up in the hand of italian traders who took it to Europe and ended up so wealthy they funded artists and scientists. You should know what happened next.

What does that have to do with anything? Musa funded tons of schools and scholars himself. The Italians didn't need to do it for him a hundred or so years later. Timbuktu was big shit.

>>
>>52677589
Looks powerful in the right deck, but realistically it'll probably only see play in casual and EDH.

Turn 2 with a single mana dork ramping for 1 isn't terrible, but if you really want to abuse it you need lots of creatures and that's not happening before turn 4 at the earliest. And then you lose.
>>

>>52677951

>>
>>52677944
>>52677951
Also standard doesn't have a 1cmc mana dork, so it's ramping for 1 (mayyyybe 2) on turn 3 at the earliest.

If you want early-game ramp there's probably a better card than this one. Its real potential is in getting 3+ lands and I don't know what deck be able to reliably do that. Elves, I guess?

>>52677957

I've been thinking, lately WoTC has been designing Planeswalkers with Ultimates based on Magic's Story. For example, Liliana the Last Hope summons up her army of Zombies, and Nahiri the Harbinger summons everyone's favorite flying spaghetti monster and destroyer of planes.

So, what if Gideon's Platinum Angel-esque ability foreshadows something in the story?

That ability seems almost like Gideon's last stand; the Gatewatch cannot lose as long as Gideon lives. Could this mean the Bolas is going to kill Gideon??
>>
>>52678068

>Magic's Story

>So, what if Gideon's Platinum Angel-esque ability foreshadows something in the story?
See that new card Gideon's Intervention: his ultimate ability depicts his ability to defend people because, you know, he's basically a paladin. It's just what he does. Big whoop.

If he dies, I'd be upset only because he hasn't had a significant character arc. He's a very flat character, and offing him before he's had any real development would reek of Wizards simply trying to up the stakes with drama. I don't care about the character. I don't care if Bolas wins or loses. I do care about Wizards' ability to tell a coherent story, and they never fail to disappoint. Let the guy reconcile with his faith, you don't need to kill him off to do that.
>>
>>52677923
>implying any of these masterpieces look good

I think stoneforge mystic doesn't really fit in either, since it is more of a build around card.

Hazoret looks really good
Rhonas looks slightly better I think (also green bias)
Oketra's isn't good because she's too small in her own art
Bontu's is ok but most of his figure is in shadow
Kefnet's is pretty decent
>>
>>52678308
>So, what if Gideon's Platinum Angel-esque ability foreshadows something in the story?
I think it's closer to worship.

I've been expecting Gideon to die for quite some time, there's not enough room for 2 cis pigs on the Jacetice league. Wotc is going to kill off Gideon and bring back Elsepth some time in the future.

Ajani might kick the bucket in the near future, replaced with a female landwhale planeswalker, probably a loxodon.

If Wotc ever releases a new mono green planeswalker its definitely going to be some strong and independent (and sassy) loxodon who needs no man, this way it opens up the possibility of releasing selesnya version of her for more empowered and socially progressive characters to join the jacetice league.

Despite previous misgivings going off of some of the spoiled "story point" cards I'm cautiously optimistic towards the amonkhet story after reading yesterday's.

Chandra even managed to act like a normal human being for a bit and Nissa has a use.
>>
>>52680401
Really surprising in a way. If you would have asked me what the community would come up with I would have assumed some OP insta-banned flavorless unoriginal 5 color legendary that's unstoppable in all formats. But no, it's one of the most flavorful, flexible, and creative cards ever printed imo. I want to build a deck around it right now, any format.
>>
>>52674479
red is gaining traction right now off the strength of magus of the moon. this little duderino here almost assuredly seats RW Taxes as the top list unless your name is Craig Wescoe and can just beat everyone with OG mono-white despite being at an extreme disadvantage in the rw tax vs mono-white taxes match.
>>
>>52680300

Besides completely shut down Lantern Control, and a large part of Affinity, and Kiki Jiki if it ever makes a comeback. Besides the general hosing of fetch lands, which definitely don't see play in modern.

>>
>>52680472
It's a lot more playable when your opponent had to spend removal on it to stop getting shocked. It's a must-answer card in quite a few matchups.

When will /tg/ stop using "dies to removal" as an argument against a creature's power?
>>
>>52680508
Kind of hard for a card to do something in a format that it is banned in.
>>
>>52680523
It's a legit concern if there is a substantial investment in the creature. I'm not so sure 2 mana is a substantial investment.
>>
>>52680201
WotC play testing has shown that when people believe they know what a card does they skip reminder texts.
>>
>>52680363

ok so turn 1 1 cmc creature
turn 2 rite, tap that creature for another 1 cmc creature (?)
turn 3 uh assuming they didnt get rid of anything, tap two creatures for 2 to play another 2 creatures, play harvest season for 2 more lands
turn 4 you have 2 cards in hand, 5 lands (+ you can play one more if you have it), and 4 mana dorks. so thats 9-10 mana available, plus 1-2 cards in your hand. i guess then you tooth and nail but is that even that good? theres more reliable hypothetical turn 4 tooth and nail ramp.

Eidolon requires taking a Shock to remove, last I checked I didn't need to crack my fetches turn 3 to cast Bolt.

>>52680523

Bontu's is very nice too.
>>
>>52680653

Or when you use any activated ability. Which, if you didn't know, consists of a good amount of the most prominent cards in the most prominent decks in both Modern and Legacy.

I think what he's saying is that when we look at worst case scenario, Eidolon seems to deal at least 2 damage when he's played. Mentor can end up being do nothing. It's not fair comparison though.

I'm probably going to switch to boros burn for a while with this tho.
>>
>>52680762

I get that, it's just that looking at things only in the worst case scenario is usually a bad idea. It's the mentality that breeds stupid shit like "dies to removal"
>>
>>52680762
>Play Eidolon
>Opponent casts t3 Karn
I think this is the worst cast scenario, mentor would be better in it. Eidolon's definitely better overall though.
>>
>>52680781

Yup, it's much more useful to figuring out expected value. And by that I think Eidolon will always be supreme for every deck playing 3cmc or less costing cards after you windslam Eidolon on table.

It's quite stupid to argue over if Mentor is playable or not. We will figure it out very soon anyway. People will play it no matter what we say and it will either show results or not.
>>
>>52680783
Eidolon and Mentor are both useless against a Karn.

Worth considering that the contest was heavily regulated though. I don't really remember how, and wizard's shitty digital management means I can't look it up either, but I think they picked like 8 submissions or so to choose between.

I forgot what I submitted. I remember thinking it was a neat card, but with the forums being nuked who really knows.

They did a series of votes, deciding the color and type of card, which ended up being Black and Enchantment, obviously. Then they opened up submissions for ideas of what a Black Enchantment should do. After that, they picked a top 16 from the entire list of submissions, then narrowed it down from 8 for the players to chose.

I know about the top 16 stage because they emailed me to tell me mine made it into top 16, but it didn't manage to get through to top 8.

I'd like them to explain the various different Egyptian sculptures where some show people with Nubian features and some show with non-Nubian features. I'd also like them to explain the reasons for various genetic DNA markers showing based on DNA tests of ancient Egyptians it turns out that there were strong markers in some of these tests that were predominant from Asiatic and Mediterranean people.

Turns out that Ancient Egypt was actually quite ethnically diverse and the majority were not Nubians.

If a player is reduced to 0 or under 0 (like a negative number) they lose the game. If a creature has 0 toughness or less upon resolution of this card that creature is placed in the graveyard. Don't eat this card Timmy"

Playtesters are dumb as dirt.

Playtesters are cancer. It's like companies are contractually obligated to pick the people that are 2 sigma left of the average to test their products. I'm reminded of a dev commentary in Half-Life: Episode 2 where Valve basically say they cut out the entire maze-like structure of a level because people kept getting lost right at the end.

>because people kept getting lost right at the end.
It wasn't "getting lost" it was "they had a path that looped back in on itself, and multiple people spent hours going through that same loop without realizing they were going the wrong way"

>and multiple people spent hours going through that same loop without realizing they were going the wrong way

They still sound retarded

That'd be like people just infinitely trying to go up the infinite staircase in Mario 64 hoping it was just super long

Oh no doubt yea, severely retarded

Fun fact: yesterday there was yet another person who was ranting about planeswalkers, but this time it was solely because...burn spells can't hit them, the only thing you can do is attack them with creatures.
He honestly did not know about the redirection rule.
It's been nine and a half years since planeswalkers were introduced.
People are just THAT FUCKING DUMB.
And that's not including the people who kept arguing As Foretold didn't let you cast Ancestral Visions (despite the first thing in Ancestral Visions' notes being a similar situation) or were claiming that New Perspectives would let you ignore the discard part of cycling. Or that fucking Approach of the Second Sun was not enforcable by the rules because the opponent would just say you never cast it or that they'd already cast it before.
As much as I enjoy watching people being horrible about Magic, it just kinda proves that in this case they're kinda right. The majority of players are idiots who don't actually know how the game works.

that's a new level of stupid

And yet, someone on this very board insisted that was the case!
These kind of people are why we have 'cycle or discard'.
