Why do Scientists/Mages/Wizards/Sorcerers ALWAYS
ALWAYS
Build things that will literally destroy the world?
>>
Because they can.
>>
>>52665807

Because SCIENCE!
>>
>>52665807
High intelligence and very low wisdom.
>>
>>52665807
Because martials are too dumb to build anything.
>>
Because save the world plots are the only thing grand enough to guarantee that all types of people have an interest in solving the problem. Anything that requires anything less has a potential for some people to be unmotivated to do anything about it.

It's a lazy plot device to bring together unlikely allies.
>>
>>52665807

>After bringing life to the dead, they improve upon it further, no one knows why...
>>
>>52665807
the same reason the angry scientists and mad engineers do it.

to see if they can.

like the guy at my old campus that built a steel-cutting laser exclusively out of parts purchased from a local grocery store and modified to his purposes. yes even the reaction-fuel.

or the guy that built a functional rail gun to skip physics 2 with an A.

or the people that make functional GPS-guided cruise missiles in their garages just to see if they can

or that guy that built a nuclear reactor for funsies

or anyone who custom makes vehicles of any kind

or those teams of people who make mechs to prove they can

or.....you get the idea.

it is a distinctly human behavior to do that sort of thing.
>>
>>52665807
We do what we must, Anon.

Mostly because we can.
>>
>>52666019
>like the guy at my old campus that built a steel-cutting laser exclusively out of parts purchased from a local grocery store and modified to his purposes. yes even the reaction-fuel.
Does that guy have a blog? That sounds amazing

>>52665835
Martials build empires.

Or they're the one with the coin funding the mad wizard, that happens from time to time
>>
>>52665807
Because we can't allow a doomsday gap! If the enemy plans to destroy the world, we have to make sure that destruction will cost them dearly and that we are prepared to destroy the world as well.
>>
>>52665807
"Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry."

Because the power of knowledge is tangent to physical power. The legendary warrior threatens the world with two armies instead: His followers, and himself.
>>
>>52666067
>Does that guy have a blog? That sounds amazing
no(I WISH), and it was...until it caught fire
he was very specific about "all components must come from the grocery store" so even the brackets holding it together were made from cheap pots and pans hammered and machined to shape. 2 years of work and it could cut up to 1/16th inch steel plate.

but the point is that it WORKED.

and that sort of person, if given access to magic, would try and build some CRAZY SHIT that might just accidentally destroy a country or three once it started to melt down...
>>
This is accidentally exactly what happened in my game history

The council of mages formed between countries, putting Dwarven craft, elvish binding, and human thaumaturgy together to create a big ass superweapon to fight a horde of Beastmen.

They ended up siphoning power from the dark magical heart of the universe where entropy itself exists. They fired it once to curse the evil kingdom into eternal pain and slavery.

When the empire came BACK juiced up on demonic power, the players went off and found the flying castle mountain to use it again. They fired it on HIGH this time.

Wiped magic off the face of half a continent and killed a race of sentient life. Good times.
>>
>>52666150
this should be the crux of any doomsday device. It's builder didn't go out with the INTENTION to build a doomsday device, its just that it turns into one when it doesn't work as intended.
>>
>>52666067
Martial's don't build anything. It's either skill monkeys, diplomancers or at least some caster levels are involved.

Plus building empires is trivial when you can create and unmake planes of existence. Anything martials can do casters do better.
>>
>>52666202
or it works TOO well.

>it was just my intention to kill this guy that bullied me growing up....now his village is ground zero
>>
>>52665807
>Why do Scientists/Mages/Wizards/Sorcerers ALWAYS ALWAYS Build things that will literally destroy the world?

>Scientists

I think you mean Engineers, Anon.
>>
How else are we going to prove our genius?
>>
>>52665807
Either they make a breakthrough in arcane history, or they fuck off to a demi-plane until the heat dies down.

Assuming neither are options, just jump to a parallel universe where your alt. self is dead and wash, rinse, repeat until you achieve a breakthrough.
>>
>>52667590
Rick, is that you?
>>
>>52665807
Why else would you become a mage or scientist?
>>
>>52665807
Because it's cool.
>>
>>52665807
Because those people are always testing the limits of existence to be able to understand and manipulate reality.

You're just bound to find numerous methods to destroy the world along the way.
>>
>>52665807
Because the Martials can't.
>>
>>52665807
To blow up the people who WANT to destroy the world. Duh!

>If something he designed worked well, it was purely by accident. Somebody requiring a surface-to-air missile probably should ask Johnson to design a small fountain.
>Acquired by Postmaster General Cowerby. In the centre of this machine is one wheel that Johnson, for the sake of tidiness, had designed to have a pi (circumference to diameter ratio) of exactly 3, not 3.14-mumble-mumble-and-a-bit. In order for pi to be exactly 3, the universe has been changed. The machine therefore taps through many layers of the space-time continuum. Mail came out of the sorting machine that wasn't put into it by the human hands of the postal workers. Mail from next week, mail from 50 years in the future, mail that could have been, mail from alternative universes, mail that people swore they posted but really hadn't, mountains of such mail.

http://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/Leonard_of_Quirm
>The alchemists have dismissed a very heavy metal, which has to be painstakingly garnered in very small amounts from tons and tons of ore, as more trouble than it's worth: they have dubbed it Uselessium, whose chemical shorthand is surely a simple "U", and sidelined it as a minor curiosity. Leonard has studied it further and estimates that this could be the basis of a very effective explosive, which could revolutionise the mining and civil engineering industries if ever whole mountains need to be reduced to rubble for ease of removal or ease of examination. Harnessed to peaceful ends, this could in fact herald new, clear, days for the human race...

>I mean, did they really need to spend all their time building stuff to destroy the universe? Like how about the galaxy's biggest movie theater? Or like some kind of super advanced water park?
>>
>>52665807
Why do RPG players ALWAYS
ALWAYS
Ask innate questions like this?
>>
Science isn't about "why", it's about why NOT?
>>
>>52666043
Even for the ones who are dead?
>>

52KB, 576x472px
those are all the same person.
>>
>>52676475
It's not even about "why not".

It's about LET'S MOTHERFUCKING DO IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS and write it down and only then try to find out what the fuck actually happened, how and why, in that order, but that's the boring part
>>
>>52665807
Because that's not what the world needs, but what it deserves.
>>
>>52666204
>Anything martials can do casters do better.
Except, y'know, exist in real life. :^)
>>
>>52666067
>Martials build empires.
And then those empires steal the wizard's stuff and nearly destroy the world. Because using things they don't understand to conquer everything is pretty much what empires do.

You would think they'd learn by now, but apparently not. If we had time to work out all the bugs in our stuff instead of making enchanted evil-sealing swords for heroes of prophecy, maybe the world wouldn't be in danger so often.

Once you get to a certain boredom, normal science just doesn't get you off in the same way anymore.
>>
>>52677697
Martials as in RPGs don't exist either.
>>
>>52665807
If they don't then who will?
>>
>>52665807
because someone else might build it first

and we can't have that
