They've already confirmed Desert won't get a reprint but we'll see more cards with the desert subtype in this set ad the next one

>>
>>52646446
How's that bad? Desert is a terrible card. Its only unique feature is that it had its own personal land type.
>>
>>52646438
Could probably deal with something like that, maybe an enchantment that causes lands to become colourless through desert counters or some shit. But the waste cards were probably one of the single most cancerous things to happen to magic in sometime in imho
They were both pointless and retarded and a classic of example of "fixing" something that was never broken

desert is far from terrible, if you get multiple copies into play they can generate so much value

Yes please. Give me deserts!

I fooled around with the desert subtype on a custom Magic set I never finished. Would love an interesting cycle of land that isn't rare, or just another shitter dual land cycle.
>>
Considering everything else from this set has been dissapointing, I'm sure this will exceed my dissapointment expectations
>>

New land. "You may exert this land to tap for one of any color". Basic tap will be colorless of course. Calling it now.
>>
>>52646269

I think what we really need to ask is will we get more Camels in the set? Currently there's two revealed in this set so that brings the entire MTG camel count to I think five?

Fuck.
>>
>>52646480

The OG Desert would be a terrible card in Standard because the decks that would want it would be 3 colour control decks and they can't afford to run 4x colorless sources.
>>
>>52646930
Its okay they will ruin it agin for you when they get rid of trample because it is "too confusing"
>>
>>52646638
Because it only pings attacking creatures and your opponents, who can see your lands, control which of their creatures attack unless you have some rare attack forcing abilities.

Ok Junior. Pass the 8th grade then you can level up your anger at a children's card game.
>>
>>52647146
>>52647140

Take note that the OG Desert doesn't stop the creature from attacking. It only deals damage at the end of the combat step after the combat damage step so you can still be dead as part of the game state regardless. Besides in Standard right now the X/1's get way too huge already.

>>
>>52648663
I meant the aftermath split cards. Those are instant AND sorcery.
>>
>>52648786
Each split card is one card. Each card returns a "yes" or a "no."
>>
>>52648865
I don't know.

Through the Breach, Goryo's Vengeance, Azusa, Jitte, Top, Kiki-Jiki, Gifts Ungiven are all pretty major players as top end, with a lot of solid role players in cards like Boseiju, Kira, Great Glass Spinner, the Shoals, Lava Spike in there.

Actually other than some assorted legendary lands that might be it, but that's a solid resume

I think it was just underpowered given that it proceeded the fucking powerhouse that was mirrodin and then ravnica follwed kamigawa bro. It didnt offer a great deal to the meta at the time beside a few choice rares and its mechanics were largely self contained (but not inherently awful). Its a real shame becasue wizards didnt play it safe and made a real concerted effort to design interesting and unique cards. Half the reason modern sets are so bland is because wizards is scared of kamigawas negetive reception and try not to go out on a limb anymore. I feel sorry for kamigawa and would love to see them take another stab at it once more with feeling. And dont play it safe you do

People love tribal and we are in egypt, also Innistrad was not too long ago.
But when the fuck will the other characteristic race get anything? Elves got some love in origin but it has been a long time since we saw some merfolk or goblin tribal.
>>
>>52649432
>why are WotC pushing zombie so hard
I have a suspicion.
Typically WotC doesn't like tribal to be competitive in standard because of the 'block monster' problem. Back in my day standard used to be dominated by decks that were 80% from one block because of a strong synergy mechanic (affinity, faeries, infect). Because of this most players just bought a completely new standard deck every two years rather than gradually updating them as sets came out. Tribal is especially at risk because it's hard to promote the same tribe in adjacent blocks in a way that's interesting.

Except they seem to have found a way with this embalm mechanic. It feels distinct from how they approached zombies in innistrad while both still read as zombies.

That said, cool card, but could have been better as a local walker.

It's sort of weird to me how little respect gods get in fiction since the majority of people are beholden to gods in real life. I guess fiction is escapism for the religious in that way?
Sort of sad because I think fiction, especially fantasy, is the only place that worship and religion makes any sense.
For a change I'd like to see some Gods in magic that aren't giant dickbags.
>>
>>52650722
I think it's partially to do with the rise of Atheism in modern society. The GODS BAD narrative helps people associate, and player association is something wizards loves (hence, the entire existence of Jace)

Gods as something benevolent and admirable would be a very interesting and compelling piece for a change.
>>

>the amazing flying autist

>>52650722
Kruphix was pretty chill, some of the theros gods were actually good.

I thought they handled "greek gods" sort of ok, zeus was a pompous dick who didn't want anything messing with his shit so he got some people to get rid of xenagos.

Besides, outside of planeswalkers (who know the gods aren't "real" gods) the theros gods and the amonkhet gods are pretty much treated as gods.

Karametra is bae. I really hope we can go back to Theros some day, but knowing Wizards(tm) storytelling if we ever go back it's going to be doom, gloom and the apocalypse.
>>
>>52650821
There's no proof to gods though.

If Yahweh or Buddha or Mohammed dropped down and smited someone then they'd have a lot more reverance.

At least in magic, the gods we've seen so far are a definite thing (in Theros) and literally walk among the people (in Amonkhet).

Is there anything yet making them evil?
Even >>52650469 doesn't say they are, just that they are still distant from their people.
Personally I would play out the "slave of Bolas" angle, having them being made to serve a purpose and being unable to escape it. Making them tragic creatures that can't escape their nature. Then the Gatewatch would have to fight good gods that have nothing against them because the master said so and Gideon could have a "You will pay for this too Bolas!" moment.

>>52650761
I don't think it has anything to do with atheism, but is the good old problem of evil. If the gods are truly powerful and good, there is little room for grand scale conflicts.
>>
>>52650926
Karametra was the main "earth goddess", Kruphix was the knowledge god and Pharika was the god of poisons and alchemy.

Do we know how much he needs to support the plane? He hasn't been on the plane in a while, if what that vizier said is true.
>>
Green seems like the only interesting color this set...

Everything else is generic and bland
>>
>>52651020
Is Amonketh a fully artificial plane?

If not I think the gods could manage the plane without issues, after all planeswalkers creations do not tap power directly from the source, examples of this are Avacyn and Memnmarch.
>>
>>52651062
I'm still surprised they made fucking ANUBIS of all people the red god, and made Sobek the black one.

>Sobek was also associated with pharaonic power, fertility, and military prowess, but served additionally as a protective deity with apotropaic qualities
>>
>>52649166
Apparently maro stated the gatewatch will be toned down past hour of devastation
>>
>>52651091
It's because of the color of their creature types in MTG. Jackals are alwaqys red and crocs are almost always black
>>
>>52651073

I was under the impression that the problem with most artificial planes is that they are typically unbalanced when it comes to Mana which is what leads to them collapsing. Balance the mana correctly and things should be fine even after the Mending.
>>
>>52651118
Which goes to show how fucking stupid the entire development process is. The 'superfriends' complaints he says that triggered this change came in Innistrad. This means 4 sets ago this new set was already set in stone.

This leaves no room for dealing with competitive aspect of the game.
>>
>>52651167
This. Serra's Realm collapsed because SOME BITCH decided that black = evil and doesn't belong in her home
>>
>>52651176

They still have bans. That's not enough, really, but it's not nothing.
>>
>>52649215
That's because of the Trials. The place is almost certainly a planeswalker farm for Bolas to have planeswalker minions who are 100% loyal to him, so why would he keep them on the plane after they've sparked? It would just fuck things up.
We may get one next set alongside the boss himself, though.
>>
>>52648428
my guess is that they'll have multiple "types" of desert for this set. Kind of like the guildgates from Return to Ravnica. Maybe with slightly different effects?

Well I think the color wheel on amonkhet is inherently fucked up too. The Cartouches don't follow WUBRG order.

In fact it looks like it goes Blue Bird, Green Snake, Black Croc, on the faces of the pyramid we see. which lines up with the middle three of the cartouches.

Also the whole Amonkhet Pledge of Allegiance thing goes;
One From Many (W)
By Force of Will (U)
Forged by Might (G)
Driven by fire (R)
Born by Death (B)
to Rise Eternal (I dunno).

In New Phyrexia, the pecking order is WUGBR. Elesh Norn, the White Praetor, is top dog on the plane, with Jin-Gitaxias being the next most important due to being the brains, Vorniclex being the middle most important, and Sheoldred and Urabrask being at the bottom, Sheoldred because she didn't work well with others (I think) and Urabrask because he has what remains of the Mirrian Resistance living in the Forge, since all that red mana gave him the feelies.

>>
>>52651564
It's been mentioned a bit before; its the ranking of the colours based on how closely they fit with the Phyrexian ideology.

White believes in unity, order, and continual improvement, which makes it the closest to Phyrexia
Blue believes in order and continual improvement, and is neutral on unity, which makes is the 2nd closest to Phyrexia
Green believes in continual improvement, is neutral on unity, and tends to be anti-order, which makes in the 3rd closest to Phyrexia
Black believes in personal improvement and order, but is highly individualist, making it the 2nd furthest from Phyrexia
Red believes in personal imrpovement, but is highly individualist and anti-order, making it the furthest from Phyrexia
>>
What if it turns out Bolas is building an army of zombies and shit to take on New Phyrexia, and all those gathered souls are a part of some sorta spirit bomb bullshit?
>>
>>52651874
>>52651745
So it's New Phyrexian order because Old Phyrexian and old Yawgy were about as black as can be
>>
>>52649816
I love you anon.
>>
>>52651935
Basically. Plus, without Yawg or any original Phyrexians to lead the way, New Phyrexia only had a vague sense of what they were about, which was making everything part of Phyrexia for the Father of Machines. Karn is a machine, so they thought "oh yeah, he must be the Father."
>>
>>52650858
There were quite a few religions on Dominaria and other planes where the divine were not definite things nor walking among the people.
The people just believed.
Sometimes the deities turned out to be planeswalkers. Sometimes they didn't. In one case, someone was named for a deity and then later became a planeswalker - then she made a bunch of 4/4 vigilant angels.

Nah, if anything it's a reflection of the monotheistic hegemony in western society. Most people take the reality of a depersonalized, omnipotent+omnibenevolent god for granted, so the fantastical alternatives are multiple, personified and fallible gods -- in which case they're written as essentially superhuman business moguls/dictators, which means assholes -- or a god just like ours only BAD. Multiple benevolent gods doesn't make sense and a single benevolent god doesn't seem fantastical.
