I think the Primarchs are also a big part of it because everything before painted them as being close to perfect whereas the HH give or expand upon their human flaws.

The Emperor being somewhat inhuman seems more realistic considering he's the most powerful psyker in human history and millennia old, not to mention an empire builder. It also helps to give him flaws by showing that he is so concerned with his overall plans for humanity and its future that he has basically cut himself off from the majority of his own race and looks at it and his creations for the most part as nothing more than resources in the furtherance of his ultimate goals.

Ultimately however it doesn't really matter since at best GW will dance around and only hint at things since it's nothing but good for them to be mostly ambiguous about the Emperor and leave it as something for the fans to argue about.

The problem isn't that, as hints of it have been there since the beginning, and most fans can easily accept a coolly aloof figure in the Emperor for precisely the reasons you mentioned.

However it's those exact flaws which I've seen so many people screech about and what led me to the belief that they expected the Primarchs to be beyond human and not simply humans with superpowers. Well if you ignore that he can supposedly shapeshift or at least magically appear as anyone/anything the Emperor just looked like an oversized normal guy in tip top shape akin to the primarchs. Some say he looks somewhat like a caveman because was born in prehistoric times so that might be an appearance he is nostalgic towards but otherwise there is nothing special.

When not wearing his armor he was portrayed as either wearing a military uniform or red/white robes/toga harkening back to ancient Rome/Greece/middle east. One key feature us the golden laurel wreath and his halo.

When it fights the Sisters near the end, it describes it as a kind of pressure, and killing them just relieves that pressure a bit. It's not clear just how close it has to be for that to take effect, but it seems to be reasonably close proximity.
