Hello folks

Could I ask you for a CYOA or two focused on developing/building your kingdom and/or lair? Anything that lists various kinds of buildings, improvements and recruitable folks is fair game, although what I'm mostly looking for is necromancer/ ancient egyptian/ Arabian Nights themed.

Posting a thing that made me want to run a game where players suddenly become overlords of a huge, sand-sunken city and have to gather magical tidbits to fuel its reawakening.

This is entirely subjective. Look at all the cyoas you like the most and use them for inspiration. Whatever they do with their intros, try to match that style.

I know it's /tg/ and all, but that doesn't change the fact that there's plenty of people in these threads that will glance through your well-written intro only to find out how many points they can spend, and may never actually read the whole thing. There's plenty of others who will actually read every word you've written, especially the more autistic rules lawyers.

Cut out the unnecessary text then. If the narrator rambles excessively you could try being fancy with fading text if it's really that important to convey that particular aspect of her personality. If it's unintentional rambling, make bullet points in your notes for the important things that need conveying in the intro, then rewrite it as best you can.

I want to run a sandboxy game, where players will need to spend the resources on waking the undead armies buried in sand and raise parts of the city. I want to give players loads of options and I am an autistic enough person to actually want to give most of the constructions/ mooks/ special characters point costs. And what's a better source of ideas for something like this than CYOAs?

The idea I'm running with right now is that the group of petty criminals scrams from the city and after almost dying from thirst on the desert, finds entrance to this long-forgotten complex. It recognizes them as bearers of ancient Pharaoh's blood (he ruled thousands of years ago; everyone and their mother has some of his blood right now) and grants them full command of its functionalities. The problem is that the ruler of the city sends a few mooks after them. They drive them off with help of a skeleton or two, but that makes the mayor send a bigger force - and the opposition constantly escalates as they power up the city to drive off all the armies that appear to elliminate this new threat to the not!Roman empire.

Remember, you don't need to have every last detail written in the introduction. Just a rough idea of what's to come. You can load the reader up with more detailed text in each section. If split up into small segments like that, more people will probably read it, since it looks like less than it really is. Even better, if it's information you actually need to know, you don't have to keep returning to the top of the CYOA to double check anything.

Personally I think it's fine, but if you're that concerned about people throwing a shit fit then just make a "drop in" style drawback, where you're left with only the memories of your past life. I don't know how in-depth you want to go with the player's life in that situation, maybe a true drop in or their friends and family needing to deal with your sudden amnesia. Of course, this option only works if you're even offering any drawbacks.

Jade Frostborne is a living time capsule, one of the few cryogenically preserved brains to be successfully revived. Her first years after being thawed out were spent in a rehabilitation clinic on an alien world, learning to use her new prosthetic body. That's actually where she met Walton Quaid, and the two became drinking buddies. They were good years, spent learning about the technology that gave her a new lease on life, and wondering at this strange future she had woken up in. Staying busy helped distract her from the grief of losing everyone she had ever known to the sands of time.

But the peace would not last, and a disaster of unimaginable proportions destroyed the life she had started to rebuild. She and Quaid found themselves in a refugee camp with nothing but large sum of interest from an old bank account Jade had finally gotten contact with. They ran into a pair of orphans named Tin and Biscuit, and decided to take the girls in. Neither of them really knew what to do with kids, but it was better than nothing.

Scraping out the last of Jade's money, they bought an old Saucer. After a little fixing up, they registered the ship as the Voyager, and registered a contracting company under the same name. Loading their things aboard, they set out to take whatever jobs they could take. Construction, Security, finding lost cats, they took whatever would put food in their stomachs, and fuel in the ship's reactor. Voyager took on another crew member after meeting Jessica Mckenzie on a security job. The boisterous girl fell right in, entertaining the kids, and helping out on the rougher jobs they caught. Her arguing with the ship's AI that Jade set up is a common sight on the Voyager.

For my barracks, two of them are slime barracks. One of them is an eldritch tentacle barracks. The final one is a witch barracks. Thanks to my library, all of my minions can use magic. My witches can use much more potent magic.

I have no traps in my dungeon. Instead I will use corridors and my own minions to get the job done. Thankfully, corridors are free.

My vision for this dungeon is a long series of corridors. These corridors have numerous holes in the walls - imagine swiss cheese. These holes are too small for any adventurers to go through, except perhaps for the fairy. Only my slimes could move through these "tubes" freely.

These tubes would allow my slimes to do things like drop down from the ceiling from out of nowhere, land on top of an adventurer, and immediately flow down their windpipe into their respiratory system. They could use electricity magic while doing so. Adventurers would have to be constantly on guard as they walk through these swiss cheese corridors.

I would also have rocks of varying weight at the end of tunnels. This would allow my minions and witches to teleport around in place of these rocks or to teleport adventurers to these rocks as an offensive action.

My eldritch horrors could suddenly appear anywhere in the dungeon and bind people.

Imagine two long connected hallways. The adventurers enter one of the hallways and a witch at the end of that hallway swaps a rock for their healer. Another witch at the end of the second hallway can now see the healer, and she swaps another rock for the healer. Their healer has just been abducted.

If the adventurer's party tries to rush forward to save them, then they will have to deal with asphixiating slimes popping out of the walls and eldritch horrors binding their movements while the witch pukes lightning on them. If they get close to the witch, she teleports away.

I'd also do things like abduct party members and take them hostage. If anybody has any strong emotional connection those party members, I would use my law magic to force them to be slaves to the dungeon in exchange for the safe return of their loved one.

Hanging around the Brunt-Maxis station, waiting for his inheritance to clear, Nicoli Krakonov struck up a friendship with a pair of... eccentric individuals; an alien D.J. named Luefree, and a somewhat unhinged, former naval commander by the name of Torn Farkus.

Between Krakonov & Farkus a plan was formulated to assemble a mercenary fleet, & ply their fortunes amongst the stars.

Tina Haywood, an annoyingly angsty goth with her own battle-strafer, and Miguel Castillo, a simian spaceman & professional smuggler with a flying saucer, were both quickly recruited with promises of equal share in the profits.

It came to Krakonov's attention that a large, powerful ship was also docked at Brunt-Maxis; a Solar Predator, complete with fighter-craft, a drop-ship & an very expensive, heavily-armed mech in it's hanger-bays.

Through Castillo's criminal connections one Danny "Freak" James was brought on-board as a 'consultant'.

With Danny's help the Solar Predator was swiftly 'appropriated', and the fledgling mercenary party fled the station in short order. Krakonov personally by-passed the security features on the mech (a shiny, new, Navajo IV) & used most of his inheritance to improve the ships at the next major port. Danny James was given the chance to go his own way, but decided that the mercenary crew offered the greater chance to make serious money, and has been a part of the group ever since.

Quickly establishing a permanent planet-side base in the form of a fortified bunker on New-minsk, Krakonov's Krusaders (as they came to call themselves) soon bolstered their numbers by securing the loyalty of both a local raider group of two-and-a-half dozen or so men, as well as a ten man squad of Fellian troops who'd come to New-minsk to get their first blood & test their mettle.

Perks:

Talented in Trap Design. This place is Hell on Earth to invade. Rather than a huge standing army, I have a heavily armed and well-trained civilian population protected by a realm that makes the Tomb Of Horrors look easy. Although nothing in here is that sadistic.

Training.

Upgrade. I'm in a Technology and Illusion Realm. We have some of the best gear possible.

Sustenance. The Constructs are robots and none of the people need anything. That's part of why they like living here so much. It also lets me kill enemies by draining air from the environment.

Devotion. The Constructs aren't really people, so they don't have morals to begin with. None of the Humanoids have their "Morals eliminated" in an evil way, but they are an army. They fight for me above anyone else, and they won't object to any of the traps I build. None of them will be inhuman, but some will be lethal. Most just eject you from the realm and make it difficult to return.

Protected. Traps work best against small groups of people, and now it's impossible for someone to bring a huge army to smash through them. Although I do have plans in case they succeed in breaking through.

Unknown. Given the fact that we're always redesigning and improving everything, it's impossible to have a good understanding of how it's defended. Or where it's located. This adds to the sheer fuckery of Don't Invadeland.

Restoration. The bear traps auto-reset. If you break anything, it repairs. Even my soldiers self-repair after a while.

I don't think it'll happen because people that are good at game design are usually going to want to change it enough that it's easier to just make their own derivative work than make edits, but he, if you want to then go for it.
