Depends on my setting. If it's one I want to take seriously I prefer sorta animalesque stone beasts. Semi-intelligent and cruel, but loyal to the master of whatever lair they are guarding, good or evil.

But for a more magical realm, digitigrade humanoids with wings horns and claws are hot AF.
