Pathfinder General /pfg/

A Hunter Must Hunt Edition
Talk about the different cool critters you've hunted in the wilds, and the cool stuff you've gotten from it. Or just complain about how the MHH is total garbage. Or how Adowyn is best iconic girl

From what I remember, I was playing in a low level campaign and the scene was "Stranded on an island after a ship wreck."

It was a lot of fun, I played a young musket master gunslinger who had some skills with survival and nature. The entire time we were on that island we kept hearing horrible screeching like from a giant bat, and occasionally I'd see something flying out in the night. Eventually we would stumble on bodies animals up in trees and drained of blood.

It was generally creepy since we barely had shit with us, and the nights were dark. We ended up tracking this thing and it turned out to be a large sized flying chupacabra, thing was scary but we managed to kill it.

This is sad. I like muscly wolf girls, but knowing what I like is now a meme gives me a really bad taste in my mouth. Kinda like how I felt when JoJo got animated and started being popular flavor of the month, even thoug I've nejoyed it long before.

Plus, now I know I can never apply to a game with that concept, because it'll come off as try-hard and memetic.

Fuck you for doing this to me /pfg/

Okay, so that, only you also get five class levels in whichever class least fits your personality and "stats."

Meaning, of course, I end up with Cleric.

Just make a muscle wolf girl that's interesting and complex, rather than just memey, and you'll be fine.

Though on the flipside, /pfg/ probably will not meme a muscle wolfgirl with an actual 3D personality, so you lose out on the e-fame.

It's not even the idea of a creator-tier being that I have the hard time believing in.

I just can't think of why a perfect being would need to create, would need to care about every individual little mortal speck. Why should /anything/ that powerful give a single hoot about me? What does it gain from that?

Why bother answering a prayer? Why bother protecting someone? Why bother safeguarding a soul?

What do you possibly get in return?

No, but generally you can forget about being a damage dealer/combat specialist as anything other than an initiator.

That being said, if spheres of Power is on the Table you can take frozen to the bone and force Fort Saves with Ice attacks.
>>
>>52491290
Tell me anon, why does a father care for and teach his child? Why would someone care for a pet or baby shelter animal? Why would you keep a houseplant? Or perhaps even better why would a person ever volunteer to be a tutor?

It's not what you get in return, it's the satisfaction of seeing someone else and become better than they are, and knowing you had a hand in it.
It's basic theological existentialism and apologetics
>>
>>52491283
DMs are not supposed to use Path of War that liberally as enemies - especially with dex optimization when the players themselves are not that optimized. Normally it's inserting a few maneuvers as needed on stuff.

This is an issue with GM encounter balancing.
>>
>>52491283
Counters don't work against AoE effects unless they specifically state it to be so, and those are usually 'move out of the area'. They also don't work against nat20 attack rolls, but that's another subject entirely.

Honestly, you'd probably have to focus on non-attack spells (flaming sphere/create pit/cloud of seasickness as examples) in order to not get slapped silly by initiators, but hey, that's the burden of spellcasters in the first place.

Honestly I choose my character picture and then describe my character's appearance and choose a fitting personality (if it makes a difference) afterwards. It might sound backwards but it's better than thinking of some super special snowflake person you have *just right* in your head and you simply -cannot- find the one picture that matches your imagination 100%.
>>
>>52494201
Actual best-case scenario?

You are or have access to an artist who can do and update art for you as the character progresses.

As for static/dynamic, I'd go with Dynamic, since that generally shows off a character's abilities better. But sometimes you don't need dynamicism. As long as the picture conveys something about the character's abilities or personality, then it's good.
>>
>>52494241
Yeeeah, trying to find the perfect picture online from your imagination is like... mission impossible.
>>
>>52494274
Learn to colorise, or befriend someone who can, and you can snag a whole load of better images that are perfect except for the hair colour or eye colour.

It takes about 5-10 minutes to change and looks OK after. You were going to spend longer than that looking for art anyway, weren't you?
>>
>>52494321
I'm >>52494241. My Pictures folder is 120 000 files large and roughly 40% sorted and tagged. I'll find something.
>>
>>52494321
I personally spend waay longer than 5-10 minutes looking through art.
>>
>>52494247
That's the thing though, I'm wondering if it indeed should try to convey something. Like, is character art actual art for the character, or just a portrait? I'm not sure anymore.

They had to run and abandon the body after the antipaladin killed another of them. The party was the following:
>Investgator

>Oracle
>Brawler

The antipaladin downed the investigator before he had a chance to act and won a slugging contest with the brawler after the brawler rolled poorly. The Oracle and Ranger bugged out. The antipaladin then stripped the bodies of valuables and mutilated the corpses to make resurrection more expensive because he knew the party were wealthy.

Are you reddyy? I'm not really a great backstory writer, but isn't your backstory a little, well...
Generic? There's nothing there that ties to the setting at all, barely anything that tells me what he's interested in and what his personality is like beyond "heroic" and "silent" which is really more or less nothing, and his motivation is like, plain? It's not even really about him being a legit 100% hero, there's just nothing else there. And I mean, being taciturn is one thing, but his drive being almost completely in the dark due to it feels like an excuse, almost, for not having one. I mean there must be SOMETHING there besides being a superhero, unless you're planning on playing the literal Kamen Rider which I guess is something unique in and of itself.
Not trying to tear into you but like...yeah.

I had experimented with an optimized Spheres of Might technician build, and I must say, the results are highly disappointing. The Mechanical Training talent grants proficiency with the gastraphetes and removes the penalty for firing it, the improved crossbow's powerful load increases damage by multiple size steps (see the improved crossbow's super-heated for proof), and powerful load is technically not a virtual size increase and therefore stacks with the gravity bow spell.

The result is that an optimized technician can deal tremendous damage with the Barrage and Sniping spheres, enough to one-shot high-CR opponents. This is concerning enough, but it also encourages the technician to completely ignore their other, interesting class features: their gadgets will be of only marginal use, their other inventions might as well not exist (it does not help that the technician is penalized for handing out allies), and the Trap sphere simply is not very useful compared to blasting enemies with a hyper-gastraphetes (unless the technician abuses the Trapsmith talent to produce self-resetting create food and water traps and similar abuses of magical traps).

Why bother futzing around with class features that might as well be ribbons, when the option to easily delete opponents from existence exists?

yup on all accounts

all valid points. more or less a rip of a rip of kamen (unlosing ranger, actually)

as a new player to both the setting and the system, i want to keep it as basic as possible and flesh my character out as i go and grow, ya dig? i get the no drive thing, but on the other hand i can't even fathom the sort of person who applies to a game, rolls a character, then goes in with the mindset of "okay my character is adventuring for this reason" opening up the option to flip it into "my character wouldn't care about that give me a better reason/hook"

i'll be playing to enjoy the game and for playing's sake, learning as i go, just as my character will be adventuring for adventuring's sake: learning as HE goes.

>>52494954
Thing is if you don't have an at least SOMEWHAT fleshed out character, the DM is going to be far less likely to choose you simply because he doesn't know how your character would interact with the group. Like, all of those characters are probably going to undergo some significant character development and deepening throughout the adventure (with possible exception of Robutt depending on how much of her personality is hardcoded I guess?), but there's just gotta be something to work with, you know? I mean, I suppose being basically someone high on A D V E N T U R E is possible but there's gotta be something else, I think. It doesn't have to be a big deal, just add in some fluff to the background. Give us some detail on his Master. Tell us why he admires the ideals of Kamen Rider who you're basing him off. Was there any incident that led to him running off to adventure, permanently? Perhaps it was a big deal, like realizing that the world was full of injustices and that peple who speak of ideals while governing towns are really more concerned with lining their own pocket and you or someone dear to you being hit with the hammer of corruption. Perhaps it was just the last straw, some petty act and you just fucking had enough, you're done, you're going to go out and fix the fucking world - you might not know how but that's not important, you'll fucking do it. Add SOMETHING. As it is the guy could be almost literally any LG character period, and I get that's what you're going for, but too generic is a pretty basic concern levied at an app - there's simply no way to know what to expect.

>learning as HE goes
This should probably be in his personality then - he's just in it for the adventure, and will help bystanders along the way, something to that effect or something more creative.

thanks for the notes, will go edit now. i ALMOST added more on the mentor but i felt it was getting too long and didn't want to give the DM a book to read, being the 11th or so submission and all i figure his or her eyes might be kinda tired by then. but with what's already there: will he embrace the way of the hero? take the vow of silence, being so softspoken already? or will he find his voice with his newfound friendship and camaraderie with his fellow adventurers? what about the family he's left behind? thanks for the help i'm gonna get on that, but i have a big fear of making it too lengthy and going from too generic to special snowflake/showboat

It's not really about length. Look at Mari's or Fairy's. Both are quality apps (in my opinion). Then move to the other end with the goddamn tomes that are Brynhildr and Robutt. Both of them are still quality apps (again in my opinion). It's not about being special snowflake either - Robot's description has so many special checkboxes it's not even funny, but that's okay - special snowflakes are a problem not because they're special but because they're special SNOWFLAKES, that is to say, they're presented as super duper extra speshul even among people who are already special (i.e. adventurers, your party) and feel obnoxious for it.

>• Average CR 9 Hit Points: 82.3
Average CR 7.

Now, as the technician's level increases, their deadly shot's damage will likewise increase. (They will also gain more and more inventions that are mostly useless to them.) How high can this damage go?

• 5th-level technician: 8d6 base damage (Sniping's deadly shot: 24d6 damage, total average 84)

• 8th-level technician: 8d6 base damage (Vital Strike via retraining: 16d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 32d6 damage total, total average 112)

• 9th-level technician: 12d6 base damage (Vital Strike: 24d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 60d6 damage total, total average 210)

• 12th-level technician: 12d6 base damage (Vital Strike: 24d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 72d6 damage total, total average 252)

• 13th-level technician: 16d6 base damage (Vital Strike: 32d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 96d6 damage total, total average 336)

• 15th-level technician: 16d6 base damage (Improved Vital Strike: 48d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 112d6 damage total, total average 392)

• 16th-level technician: 16d6 base damage (Improved Vital Strike: 48d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 128d6 damage total, total average 448)

• 17th-level technician: 24d6 base damage (Improved Vital Strike: 72d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 192d6 damage total, total average 672)

• 20th-level technician: 24d6 base damage (Improved Vital Strike: 72d6 damage, plus Sniping's deadly shot: 216d6 damage total, total average 756)

Woe betide the technician's foes if the technician can find a way to gain true strike. That may be unnecessary, however, as the technician can make such shots round after round, on top of barrages.

I don't do discord and unless work forces me to I never will. Sorry man.
And I'm a fellow foreverDM, I've been running a game that's been going for over a decade, and in another run by my sister that's been on for about five years. I'm just giving advice from the point of view of what I imagine DMs would like to see from applicants.
There's also a difference between the applications applicants should hand in when they know they're in and the ones they hand in when you're competing for a spot. Jocking for a spot means you need to flesh it out, make it appealing to the DM, make it look like it's got some hooks to bite into and so on. If you're already in or just playing with friends in the same group, then it's possible to submit 'basic' characters that get fleshed out only a little bit at character creation and develop as time goes on - the DM and other players have time to work with you, tell you what might not work, what can be left for later, etc., because you and everyone else in the party are already in.

I am already slated to run a Spheres of Might playtest game (unfortunately, the earliest it can take place is in three weeks).

My GMing experience is concentrated squarely in running a moéfied Planescape ( https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/51265864/#51300766 ). I have used a number of systems for such a setting, but none have been d20 systems.

I make extensive use of tokens such as this. Every named NPC receives their own token, even if they are never to be featured in combat.

It's basic courtesy to put the minimal effort in to reach your pinky finger / ring finger to the Shift key when capitalization would be appropriate, and attempt to follow the rules of grammatically correct punctuation as well as you can. I'm not going to get anal over something like the different types of dashes or the oxford comma or something on 4chan of all places, but there's a point where not putting in the effort means either a "lazy post" (a one off line usually) or just plain not being able to be assed to show some threshold respect to the other guy, who IS putting in that minimal effort.

Yeah except in English you see there is no such thing as an isolated "i". If you want to indicate the lowercase letter "i" you generally enclose it in quotes to make it its own token instead of what it normally is, a misspelling because the lowercase "i" by itself is not an English word.

>England is where the capital “I” first reared its dotless head. In Old and Middle English, when “I” was still “ic,” “ich” or some variation thereof — before phonetic changes in the spoken language led to a stripped-down written form — the first-person pronoun was not majuscule in most cases. The generally accepted linguistic explanation for the capital “I” is that it could not stand alone, uncapitalized, as a single letter, which allows for the possibility that early manuscripts and typography played a major role in shaping the national character of English-speaking countries.

>The reason for writing I is ... the orthographic habit in the middle ages of using a 'long i' (that is, j or I) whenever the letter was isolated or formed the last letter of a group; the numeral 'one' was written j or I (and three iij, etc.), just as much as the pronoun. [Otto Jespersen, "Growth and Structure of the English Language," p.233]

In other words: Because "i" looks retarded and was geniunely confusing at the time due to typographical conventions. The other reason: because we do, it's just a convention. Language is defined, after all.

>>52495434
Nobody is asking for perfect grammar. The mere fact that we get to do things like >implying or >tfw or have many responses be fragments makes that clear. There is, however, still no reason to not put in the basic effort to correct. If you're saying you're literally just bad at grammar or an ESL, that's something else although ESLs should git gud

A Dexterity-based medic (sanguinist) 1/mystic (aurora soul) X is one of the strongest possible unarmed builds in Path of War.

Such a build gains Wisdom to unarmed damage twice (yes, this stacks, even with the FAQ, because one of them is technically not a bonus) on top of Dexterity, and also adds their Wisdom to AC in light armor on top of Dexterity.

The two best races for this are blinkling (high defenses all around, including a free Robe of the Forgotten Deity) and aellar (high AC and flight).

For this purpose, however, the paladin's untyped "bonus equal to her Charisma bonus (if any) on all saving throws" from divine grace is considered to be the same as "Charisma bonus (if any)", and the same would be true for any other untyped "bonus equal to her [ability score] bonus" constructions.

The medic (sanguinist)'s blood transfusion deals additional damage, not a bonus.

>That seems overpowered in general
Even *without* taking Broken Blade, Primal Fury, and Scarlet Throne in mind, it is no more egregious than a dreige or half-giant warder (ordained defender, zweihander sentinel) swinging a 3d6 damage Large lucerne hammer while availing of Power Attack and Furious Focus.

Gotcha, I think I'll ask my GM for final ruling on that
>>

Those races should be from Bloodforge, I think.
As far as stacking, I think the Wis to damage part should work for how the Blood Transfusion ability is worded, but I'm not sure.

In any case, even a straight Sanguinist Medic is pretty good: I'd highly advise to grab the Medic Expertise that gives fast healing ASAP, so you can still help people not dying.
Going with natural attacks is a strong option, as you apply full WIS to each of those, and you can grab extra natural attacks trough the Chimera Soul stances (Lord of the Wild playtest). There are Shifting Feats from that playtest, too, that give other NAs.

Usually my GM does not allow playtest material though, I'd have to ask, thanks anon

>there is a way to make Diplomacy work with Sense Motive perfectly by tying it to Wisdom
>you can't do the same by tying Sense Motive to Charisma
Charisma is such a garbage attribute.

Oh, wise sages of the Pathfinder general, please answer my question.

Are there any rules for standing on a moving mount?
>>
>>52495762
Can't let Charisma have nice things, anon. People might use three different 3pps and some highly dubious obscure shit from 1pp to break the game.

>mount
Don't. The sage has spoken.

>I'd highly advise to grab the Medic Expertise that gives fast healing ASAP
With how Expertise is worded, Invigorating Touch makes your Triage into fast healing without you having any say on the matter. Even if you have 20 hp stored in your reserve and would like to give them to someone, nope, you instead have to give them fast healing 5.
>>
>>52495783

It's a simple Ride check and a less than simply Acrobatics check.
>>
>>52495824
>without you having any say on the matter
... Or you actually do have something to say, it's just under Triage and not Medic Expertise.

Yup. The same one where the gamedevs literally came and said "Dude, this isn't going to help us at all. Stop."

Does sslarn ever say 'yeah this will help me' though
