I've been out of 40k for quite a while now and recently found my old stash of tyranids that need painting. Considering picking up the hobby again because its not gonna have really any initial cost. Just need paints and they look fun as fuck tonpaint, so im sticking with nids for now. I see it posted all the time about how awful nids are these days. Can anyone elaborate on why they are so awful? Started picking up models for them back when the 5e codex was current

3ed is objectively the best edition, and the most balanced.
4th is okay too, but not every army got a 4ed codex.

I used to play tyranids and wont plenty of times. Depends on your list, your opponents list, deployment, tactics, etc. If you know what you're doing and build a solid list, you can do decently against most opponents. I've beaten guard, SM, eldar, orks, chaos SM and demons of chaos. Probably others I can't remember. I played a lot of games and went to a lot of tournaments, and sometime you just don't remember all the games.
