Traditionally you "shake down" new gear to find basic assembly errors. Subject it to catapult-shot stresses, arrested landings, that sort of thing. On a 'Mech, we're talking more like jumping jacks and a few marathons around the city. If you don't do that properly, a bad electronic connection or a small hairline fracture in the engine casing can make you, literally, burst into flames when you're >not< prepared to deal with it. Or, as happened on one of the aircraft carriers I was working on, a brand-new tailhook will abruptly sever along a series of microfractures that didn't appear on a standard X-ray, and required an entirely new testing protocol so birds didn't abruptly end up in the drink.

>>52263487
To be perfectly honest, I like Blade Runner better than RoboCop, and I still prefer the other gun design.
>>
>>52266207

God, so glad I worked on birds that used a runway that wasn't fucking ridiculous. Ground-based launches and maintenance are so much easier.

She was nobody when she played Sergeant Nim in Gunhed, but the bigger role I remember was as Michelle Rodham Huddleston (the female characters all had the middle name "Rodham" aping then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton) with Charlie Sheen and Valeria Golino in Hot Shots Part Deux.

The problem is that even a Wasp or Flea goes 6/9, and the Locust goes 8/12.

A PHawk or Griffin can keep up with the slower lights, while the Locusts push forward, but a Rifleman doesn't have a chance of that, and unlike the PHawk and Griffin, it lacks jump jets, so any terrain at all only slows it down even further.

>Aside from 12 Panthers or 12 Dragons, how would you make a Kurita company?
Stop meming and actually use the other machines that they make? Throw some Star League shit in and play Ghosts? Maybe Azami?

As of 3025, the Kuritas were making all of the following additional 'Mechs, plus some thirty refits:
Locust, Wolverine (and actually an excellent variant at that), Pixie, Quickdraw, Archer, Lancelot, Atlas, and Charger
In addition, the Catapult (post-3033), Daboku, Hatamoto-Chi, and Victor ~the War of 3039.

They also have refits for or gifts of:
Mongoose, Spider, Wasp, Kintaro, Shadow Hawk, Sentinel, Guillotine, and Thug. At a minimum.

Not that that's a super-great list, but it's at least varied. Throw in a couple FedSuns or Steiner salvage units and you've got a party.
>>
>>52279638
They also had a lot of Hunchbacks IIRC
>>
>>52279113
It's in Black Widow Company. Which is for BattleDroids, not BattleTech. That said, "Gentleman" Johnny Clavell switches over to a Hornet around the Battle of Misery and never looks back. I'd throw him the SPA that lets you push some extra movement out of your machine.

>>52278993
The Wolverine and Pixie are both Command 'Mechs, and common in Recon lances, but there's a lot of other useful things you can stick in there to stiffen the line. Cicada, Assassin, Fire Javelin and a lot of the other "Superbugs" all work well too.

>>52279156
Honestly, that's a "mugger" Fire Lance for operations in broken terrain, not really a Scout lance. A proper Kurita Scout lance would probably be a swarm of Locusts or Wasps with a Spider or Dragon or something backing them up. They tend to pull the jets off of their Mediums for more sinks/armor/guns, so the Drac Mediums are pretty shit at maneuver warfare.
>>
>>52279638
Sorry man, it's just hard to know what they were actually making like around 3025-3050 because their sourcebooks have been scant on details or there have been retcons.

>>
>>52280687

Master Unit List, but be prepared for retardation where the Suns get pretty much everything decent regardless of who makes it or does the refit and the idea of putting a Large Laser on a Wolverine is so fucking mind-blowing only the FWL can manage it for like 400 years.

Xotl's RATs have faction lists for 3025 that only have non-salvage, actually-fielded stuff, and each list tell you how common any given mech is within that faction.

The MUL by contrast has a barrier for entry of "even a handful" gets a faction rated as having "access", which is much vaguer.

Nobody had those old blueprints until the Dallas core. They were so old they were lost. Best bet is a homegrown custom, maybe based on existing industrial design.

Honestly, they're about the same. On shitty numbers, you're more likely to land >some< damage with the fours, but with a brawler they're gonna wind up equivalent in damage. You do also get slightly better crit-space and ammo/weight efficiency with the fours. But unless you split them across the torso or arms it's gonna make you look like a twink.

Actually, there could be some potential there. Elstars becoming a more common thing and eventually conclude that they're as beyond regular trueborn as the hardcore trueborn consider themselves beyond freeborn, leading to a conflict as the elstars try to boot the trueborn into second class status.

Of course that assumes elstars become something more than a footnote

So apparently when you set out to design an Introtech Heavy 'Mech with an AC/20 because there really isn't one (which is strange) you end up with what looks like a Thunder and an Enforcer had a baby. Or something. The 2R is a bit odd in that it has a higher-heat energy weapon and less SHS, but the change causes a re-bracketing and so you don't actually need as many sinks, though you do gain walking heat, which isn't a huge deal, since you can just not fire the LRM5 once every few turns you're fighting at long range.
>>
>>52284022
If you consider them above average I would suggest broadening the number of people you have played against. I especially suggest you spend some time playing with what is left of the mekwars servers. Calling them average is no slur. But realize that the level of play that can be achieved in this game is ridiculous.
>>
>>52284077
And at the same time there are people on here and on the OF who can barely make a mech walk. I think MekWars is considerably above the average.
>>
>>52284112
It may be I have a skewed perspective of player skill. I played most of my games with the people on those servers and it is how I judge skill. Some of those guys are just inhuman in their ability to corral an opponent.
>>
>>52284077
Having played on MekWars, the fact that either of them use tactics other than circle of death puts them a cut above. Most MekWars players were pretty trash. I've speculated on Muninn pulling off a nasty envelopment and coordinated combined arms assault. Never seen CA play, although I have seen a couple of AARs from way back where he seemed pretty good. Relies on nukes too much though.
>>
>>52284157

>>52284157
When you're playing with a battalion of RWA troops against a regiment and a half of SLDF, force multipliers like nukes are vital. Mostly it's memery these days. I just want real live artillery barrages that can wipe out mechs without spending a half dozen turns on it.

>And NEA was a demo agent and in the best battletech group in the world, so he's probably pretty damn good.

Former Cincy here. Toronto's straight-up the best at small games, Cincy's better at larger games.

NEA is the best player in the group tho. IIRC he's never placed less than third in any of the tournaments the group ran and wins more often then not. When Cincy went up against Toronto at Gencon a few years back in a bunch of 1 on 1 lance sized games, Toronto had a 6 year undefeated record (5-0 every year). Cincy lost the overall series 1-2-2, and NEA had the only clean win. Toronto's guys haven't lost a game in those matches since then either, so as far as I'm aware he has the only outright win against that group in the history of the program. I think the only thing he hasn't done much of is double blind games, and that's just because running that shit is hard in person and he doesn't play megamek very much.

I honestly and genuinely can't recall the last time I saw him lose a match that wasn't due to overwhelming bad luck. And no, do not ever let him run aerospace. He NPCd in a campaign a few years ago and got a couple of normal Corsairs against a pair of custom Hammerheads with 1/1 pilots and a pair of Royal Stukas, and killed one of the HHs, crippled the other, and killed one of the Stukas before retreating off the field with both of his planes.

It's not even bragging. The guys hugely experienced at the game, learns scary fast, and studies warfare and tactics damn near obsessively because he does stuff with fighting and violence as his job. I mean the fucker literally wrote the actual published manual on Leviathans tactics.

To add to this, my Atlases are technically going to be custom models but are still in the works. I swapped out their SHS for DHS, but due to crit space had to drop it to 15. So I have 5 free tons for each one and I'm not entirely sure what to do with them.

The guys I'm playing with are cool with Semi-Guided LRM ammo so I'm planning on using that with my Longbows and considering adding TAG to my Atlases or other mechs.
>>
>>52289641
Assault companies generally don't consist of 12 assaults, for a first thing
>>
>>52289641
Kinda spastic. The Atlases and Victor are full Quentin-made Combine. The Goliaths and Longbows are FWL. Pick a state and stick to it.

Lastly, way too much repetition. Assaults are rare enough they don't get whole bunches of the same exact designs and assault companies just mean they are assault heavy, not 100% assaults, unless you're some gimmick unit like the Crushers or Barber's Marauder II's.

Like say Charlie Lance might be two Longbows and two Archers instead. Alpha might be one Atlas, two Hatamoto Chi's, and a Grand Dragon or something. That sort of thing.
>>
>>52289870
>>52289894
I should have said so but the point of the match is both forces are "gimmick" units of all assaults. Thought it was obvious, my bad.

>Kinda spastic.
Trades during an era of them. Half the mechs were picked because I already had the minis, the other half were determined with the FM FWL RAT.
Now that you mention it though a Hatamoto-Chi might work in place of one of the Atlases.

>too much repetition
This I was thinking on. The whole lance of Longbows might look cool but it's more a SL era of homogeneous forces thing.
>>
>>52289950
Depending on how late you're playing in the Clan Invasion-era you could change out an Atlas for a Hatamoto-Chi 28T. Lose the C3 Slave unit and add a Tag unit to use in sync with your fire support lance. Bam!
>>
I see you guys are getting bored over here. Let's change that!

Do you think the Battletech game is going to have some sort of targetted animations for DFAs?
It's definitely doable, though the pose in question would be a hard one. I'd go with Inazuma Kick but hey, everyone has their own idea of what the best one to use could be (and you need a different one for the hens, anyway).
They're probably only going to make two, if at all.

So, what would your choice for kicking the head in of some poor sod be?
Assuming they don't go the lazy route and simply put the standing model on top of another model, that would be criminally low-budget, minimally viable take on things.

>>52290793
As much as I am looking forward to the game, I don't feel like HBS really has the animation skills to pull off anything interesting. Judging by the pre-alpha sluggish jump animations and the hilariously cartoonish punch animations, DFAs are gonna be a slow jumping mech does a two point landing on another mech and the latter mech then does an over-exaggerated slow motion collapse with numbers popping out.
And as cool as an Inazuma kick is, there really is not much precedent for mech martial arts. Mech Judo would totally make sense, Mech Shaolin Kung Fu, not so much.
>>
>>52289793
If you're going to throw that much LRM fire support in there, have at least one machine from Alpha and Bravo mount NARC, and have the Longbows carry some NARC-capable ammunition. Indirect fire without need for a spotter.
>>
>>52290720
Sounds like a good idea to look into.

>>52291063
The Stalkers mount NARC. I was also thinking of adding TAG to a couple in the first two lances so the Longbows (or maybe Archers if I change the lance up) can use SGLRMs.
>>
>>52291138
Combine Alpha and Bravo then. Put an Atlas, a Stalker, and a Goliath each in them. Put the BattleMaster and Victor where you see fit. That way each lance reinforces each other and can also operate independently. You're not having a lance that's just direct-fire support, for example.
>>
>>52291058
>hilariously cartoonish punch animations

The punch animations weren't the best but they showed some promise.
After seeing nothing but MW:O for years, it was definitely a massive step up.

The Inazuma Kick is an easy suggestion for awesomness but it come to mind as one of the easiest ways to show a targetted kick from high up (as per the massive arcs seen in the demo).
How else would you kick someone in the head, anyway?
>>
>>52291207
That might work. I initially grouped them based on movement speeds (3/5 for Alpha and 4/6 for Bravo)

On reviewing this gif, yeah, they aren't as bad as the lower res preview gif I had seen made them out to be. I have actually never played MWO, I just downloaded it for all the free Mech reference models, so I have no idea what the animation cycles look like in that game.
I do give them massive props for finally bringing melee into a Battletech video game for sure.
I just don't see mechs getting horizontal mid air for jump jet kung fu action. One leg extended further than the other before landing on another mech? Sure. On that note, there better be a kick animation planned for their "Engage in close combat" command.
>>
>>52291622
>One leg extended further than the other before landing on another mech? Sure.

Well, the whole showiness of the martial arts moves is generally because simply extending a leg further like that would most likely have you fall on your ass after the hit.
The DFA rules don't really require that IIRC.

>>
>>52292498
>There are limits to how far you can stretch the suspension of disbelief.

Well, realistically speaking, not being able to do such things at all is what is the main cuase of problems with the suspension of disbelief.
They're super giant, super great robots of the future! They can't hit shit past 200 meters. They can easily out-fucking-run any conventional car and a good amount of sportscars! But they can barely raise their arms. They can uproot trees and bash each other with them! But they can't carry more than one 10th of their weight, making them some of the worst lifting machines humanity ever developed. Et cetera.

Battletech is not really all that hard on managing suspension of disbelief, it simply pushes it in another direction and waves off problems with the good old, "A wizard did it."
Also, there's a great deal of space between being able to deliver a fucking kick and doing olympic tier gymnastics.

Even those maneuvers, acted and exaggerated as they are, require a greater amount of agility and flexibility than one would think.

Try to imagine an Atlas performing a suplex. how far its torso would wave to stretch and bend in order to achieve that maneuver?

Battlemech maneuvering is described as being like a man in armor. Imagine being dressed in an EOD bomb disposal suit, and trying to do a suplex with a bad back.

Sure, if you cheat using modern steel and weight-saving measures people in armor can do that. Real knights were short manlets who were habitually malnourished and could barely stay standing in their armor and had to be winched onto their horse. All that video proves is that modern people are larger and stronger than people in the middle ages, and that modern materials are stronger and lighter.

Nice job making a retarded argument.

>>52293105
Real knights were nobility and ate decently for the most part, and got onto and off their own horses on the battlefield in many historical accounts. You don't run a whole village and starve. Stop confusing levies and men at arms for actual knights. Even men at arms in the 15th+ centuries did alright.

Modern materials aren't much different than 17th century full plate either because you can't form steel plates that big if your metallurgy sucks as much as you imply. It was the durability that was all over the place, mostly because heat treatment wasn't as exact without modern instruments.

Modern people on average are taller than medieval people because of serfs dragging the average down. Looking at the actual well fed people, height is pretty consistent for the last few thousand years. And the absolute shortest people were was in the 18th and 19th centuries when less meat was available worldwide.

So, um nice bait I guess.

>>
>>52293105
A lot of what >>52293260 said. Knights were almost always nobility. That was any kind of noble from a king down to a fief-less lord.

Later in the middle ages, when plate armor wasn't so prohibitively expensive, a lot of knights would fight dismounted, still in full armor.

Metallurgy did improve throughout the middle ages, such as making plates of better and lighter material, and designs improving so rather than needing slabs, they could segment and use thinner, lighter plates to provide equal or greater protection. This also gave better flexibility.

>>52293590
I figure it would be a refit after they realize the problems with the original design. Series 2 if you will, where they keep the same design principles of long range direct fire, but fix the outstanding problems. The Compact Gyro is really the only thing pushing it beyond its original production date, but doing that let me make the crit slots and tonnage work out better than if it used a normal gyro.

As for not ctrl-c directly into paint? I like to keep SSW's text formatting, and copying into notepad++, and then screenshotting that keeps the format for me. I just wish that SSW could easily export as pdf or jpg without having to do workarounds.

What this Anon said. I have typically found the better players have no problem helping you improve. They tend to not get a lot of offers to play and if they can get you up to near them so much the better.

So I ran into a lot of players running certain army types on long dead mekwars servers. My least favorites being arrow units IV with homing ammo hidden on the far side of the map. With either Talons spotting on open terrain or ostcouts or similar in a jungle. Or playing against the clanner with a couple vipers with mpl's on a jungle or triple forest world. It always bothered me how far a comp like that can go as a crutch.

Some of them had less PPCs but were tarcomp'd, for even more cheese

The whole point of armour is to prevent internal structure damage and crits right? So having 14 armour is sub-optimal. There's no weapon the game that does 13 or 14 damage, although a LL hit and a ML hit will add up to 13 damage, so when we're allocating armour to a location, you want to be able to stop a given weapon that sits about the right threshold for a mech. The side torso rears are 10 so they'll stop a PPC, but not a Binary Laser(not that those ever get used). If they were only 9, we'd be checking for crit if a single PPC hit was taken there. So having 14 armour is rarely a terribly good thing. 15 prevents a clan ERPPC or a gauss rifle from checking for crit on the first shot, or is you get hit by 3 ML shots, the third one won't go through. Good use of armour allocation can make or break a mech. It is one of the reasons that 55tons is much MUCH stronger than 50 tons, because at 55, you can make it so every non-head location across the front of a mech will stop an AC-20. Similarly, it is a problem with the Hunchback designs, where the rear side torsos won't stop a medium laser from going through and checking for crit, and on one of those torsos, that crit is guaranteed kill, and the other merely takes away the AC-20. That one point of armour difference makes it so that a lone Locust can run up and kill a hunchback with one shot to the rear arc.

If you can, you always want to build your mechs so that they can stop a certain threshold of damage. It isn't often that one of these exact scenarios will come up, but when it does, that one point of armour can be the difference between your mech being an expanding cloud of shrapnel and simply damaged.

I'm planning a bunch of potential names for some warships that my players stand a chance of getting, and knowing them they are going to take the silliest and funniest routes possible. So far, I have the "Premature Eradication" and "(I Blame) My Parents", but I'm hitting a wall fast. Any ideas?

>>52294230
Heh, I'd be down but it would get a little same-ey to be honest. You can only drop a NARC launcher so many times before everyone knows what you're gonna do.
>>
>>52295333
3 ML is much more likely to be hitting rear arc, but the point remains that 15 is a much safer armour threshold than 14. You don't always win initiative, and with a slow mech like the Atlas, you don't really get to dictate range either.

The whole point of good design is minimizing weaknesses wherever possible. Ensuring that a single bad turn of shooting won't kill your mech can mean the difference between victory and defeat, and when you can pre-empt problems in the design phase, it is best to do so. It's the same reason I abhor the XL engine comboed with the side torso gauss rifle. It is an unecessary risk without great payoff.

>>
>>52295548

Right, but if I design my mech better than you, and we fight equally well on the tabletop, I'm probably going to win. You want to stack every advantage you can get on top of each other, so that if everything else is equal, you still have the advantage in your favor. So if I'm following my design philosophy regarding armour thresholds and shoot one of your mechs in the back, I'll get to check for crit. You shooting me in the back with the same weapon in the same location isn't going to check for crit.

If you play the tabletop at ALL, you should know that crits are what win fights. A mech almost never dies from losing all of its internal structure. It is almost always from the engine getting critted out, or the gyro or actuators shot and it falling over so it just gets kicked to death, or an ammo bin going up. Setting up the armour layout to minimize the possibility of a check for crit can and does make a difference in the tabletop fight. This is especially relevant if you have something bigger than just one or two mechs fighting each other. In a lance on lance fight or company on company, or even bigger, you can't always control who gets into your back arc, so having an armour slab set up so that it doesn't breach from a single hit from a common weapon is a big deal.

I want to run bug lances dying in knife fights on the edge of the Inner Sphere.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but a single crit can win or lose a match sometimes, so it only makes sense to set up your armour scheme so that a single shot from a common weapon can't crit-check you if at all possible.

not the guy who posted it, but I suppose so. Memes can be true, after all.

One of them is a huge prince fan- it could be "____ and the REVOLUTION" which would give us more reasons to blast 80s music while playing.

Sort of pasta. It's only pasta in that a lot of people think it and so say it. Since a lot of people are saying the same basic concept, it's going to start all sounding the same. And just because it may be approaching pasta status doesn't make it untrue.

Unfortunately, it likely is true, actually.

Depends. Just playing by the rules of merc unit creation out of FM:Mercs revised, it's relatively easy for a merc unit to start with one or even two Dropships, even if you're unlikely to actually own them. If you're playing by the written rules that are clearly fine with new merc units owning DropShips then I don't consider it to be mary sue.

On the other side, merc units which own mechs at all are pretty mary sue, because if they're as rare as people say the various governments and nobles would forcibly confiscate them and there's nothing anyone could do about it. It's like a feudal lord confiscating the horse of a peasant.
