What's the best game for a modern fantasy investigation into the occult type thing? Want to stay far away from CoC, would like for there to be some magic involved with the potential for fun combat.

Was thinking a Whitewolf game but don't know which would be appropriate/generally doesn't suck.

Hunter the Vigil?
>>
>>52225594

I once played in exactly this using vanilla nWoD in a homebrewed fantasy setting. Worked pretty well.

Isn't this just a 20s era campaign setting for CoC? It's not my aesthetic either way. One of the main things that killed my last campaign was the lack of character agency, so I want them to have a greater impact in the world itself eventually and any Lovecraft-based campaign is going in exactly the opposite thematic direction.

Biggest inspirations for me are games like Persona and series like Berserk, Twin Peaks, The Killing (swedish), Claymore, BLAME!, cyberpunk nonsense, Prince of Nothing. Just throwing that out there for anyone reading so they get a feel of what I like.

I've heard of this system but I really don't know much about it, can you tell me a little before I dive into the pdfs I have?
premade setting is pretty

>>52225888

Same here, I know some VtM lore but basically nothing else about the Whitewolf games. One thing that scares me about them is that the premade setting is pretty integral to the system itself.

What is Hunter the Vigil like?

>>52225954
I didn't even know there was a vanilla World of Darkness that you could apply to homebrew. That would actually sound pretty promising if it's worth a shit.
>>
>>52228913

Hunter the Vigil is basically mortal WOD with some level of powers/institutions supporting the characters. Basically, you can be fighting monsters alone as an average joes' group or have the support of a big pharma biotech secret company (for example). There is a middle layer in which the support given to you is smaller.
It's nothing great, as every WW shit, but I think the layer system was cute.

Check out Monster ot the Week. That game can be a little too action-y or cinematically overpowered, but your examples seem to indicate you don't have much problems with that. And besides you could just veto some skins like the Monstruos.

(this assumes you mean "modern fantasy" as pretty much interchangeable with "urban fantasy")
>>
>>52225594

GUMSHOE is meant to be the best RPG out there for investigation, but I've not heard much about the other parts of the system.

Dresden Files RPG is really great, give it a look.
>>
>>52228913

Oh, and Delta Green is more or less X-Files COC. The PCs are actually federal agents. Personally I loathe COC so I can't really say anything more, but it's investigation, not X-Com, to give you an idea.
>>
>>52229088
Eugh, if you are going Fate based, you are better off with the Atomic Robo RPG.

Unless this is a different Dresden Files RPG.
>>
>>52229190

EUUGH OMG FUCKING FFFFATE?

JESUS CHRIST, GET THAT THING OFF OF ME, I THINK IT MIGHT HAVE TOUCHED ME, UUUGGGHH

Fucking grow up, Dresde Files is a great system, especially for urban fantasy investigation.

You don't even read, do you? Not him, but he wasn't getting mad about FATE. He even suggested a different version of the FATE system he preferred. But for some reason he dislikes the specific implementation of FATE in DFRPG. But rather than inquire and learn, you just reacted like an idiot.

For what it's worth, I think FATE is fine as a game. Not to my taste, I've never seen an iteration of the system with actually good combat mechanics, but I'm also entirely aware that's not the point of the system.

I'd suggest GURPS first. A modern day game with morals finding out the world is darker and stranger then they might like can be a lot of fun. Combat is brutal and bloody, and the rules in general allow for fast play, though character creation for new players can be quite slow. There is a high energy, kinda over the top published setting for this in the form of Monster Hunters.

New World of Darkness v2 (AKA God Machine Chronciles) also works very well for this. There's far more rules for morailty and how being exposed to the supernateral can effect a person and give them PTSD. If that isn't your thing, you might not like it.

>>52229088
Dresden Files, but only if your group already likes Fate. It's.. polarizing.

I'd like to run a campaign inspired by True Detective. Does anybody knows of a good system that captures that sense of corruption and despair, and where character flaws play a big role?

I'm OP, this so far has been the most interesting system proposed I think. I'm going for medium crunch, otherwise GURPS would be great just for its extensive customization, but I feel it's a little numbers heavy for my players.

As long as I can overhaul it to my needs, I might try to dig into the corebooks for this. I want my characters to basically be able to expand to medium power so they can contend with different supernatural creatures, but start off more or less base human.

>>52229965

I would say the Delta Green suggestions I was getting are a good place to start for you. Plus True Detective throws direct references at the whole Lovecraftian beast with the King in Yellow stuff.

>>52229672

Like I mentioned, my only fear with GURPS is that it's too crunchy for my characters. We're coming in from a BRP game, RuneQuest 6. I was thinking of going to Eclipse Phase and Exalted respectively before making this thread but neither were scratching my itch (decided against scifi and Exalted is a little epic scale I think).

So I settled on a dark urban fantasy game, if I can find the system for it.

Thanks everyone for all the help and input in this thread!

Why am I so aroused by this Zelda? It's so much better than straight nudity
>>
>>52230127
It's a display of more genuine, natural sensuality than what you get in porn.
>relaxed expression
>half-closed eye lids
>slightly parted mouth
>erect nipples
She's aroused. Her outfit suggests there is also still yet an adventure to be had. She is a lady, after all.

>>52230890
Why does porn have to suck so badly? It's almost impossible to find real arousal or passion.
>>
>>52231564
There are too many degenerate consumers that settle for trash.

There is some but it's mostly girl/girl stuff.

youre looking for unkown armies.

its twin peaks the game, but half the town people are wizzards. id suggest making a player handout of the rules and not letting them read the actual lore or setting. that way you can be selective of what you include. the settings thing is "modern magic", so there are people who get powers from their city, people who get power from money, people who get their power from being drunk, etc. it sounds extremely memeish but the book takes it seriously.
>>
>>52229965
unknown armies has a mechanic for character flaws thats simmilar to CoC's sanity system.

Why is passionate lovemaking so gay, then? Why won't she come home?
