Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:

We also have a Discord now, at https://discord.gg/zzTq7Xw
And a Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/SongofSwordsRPG/

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

The legend is pretty damn close to having 30,000 dollars.

Usually, a poll is sent out to backers that lets you assign the extra money you pledge to addons.

Cant wait for the final release of the rules next year, I just dont know if I should run it for my group before then or wait till feb which is still a pretty long way away. They loved that system that shell not be named so they would love SoS. Guess you cant really have enough SoS for that to be a real problem though.

It is a cool spring night, the full moon providing a good amount of lighting, even within the dense wood of the forest.

You and your cadre has been following a Lagorian caravan on route to Glade Mendiak for the last week, on the orders of Kal Amar. Last night, as you camped, a messenger Shulka arrived with orders to move on the convoy as soon as possible, and to secure whatever cargo they are transporting.

Tonight, you, your 10 Shulkas, and 2 subordinate Kals (all Havas mounted), are on the outskirts of the forest in which the Lagorians have made camp. They've been camping away from the roads during the night, trying to stay out of sight. In the day, they've flown no banners. You've estimated the party some 25 strong, all fighting men. You have the cover of night, and their camp lays within the woods, down the trail ahead.

How shall we proceed?
>>
>>52200452
Surround in squads, try to eliminate sentries stealthily with your Kals, using those bows.
Consider distributing grenades among the men to use as an opening shock; if not that, oil flasks on tents.

Once they are surrounded, launch the ambush.
Plan B is have your Kals fall in on you and cut a path directly for their commander while the shulkas attack.
>>
>>52200508
>bows
>stealthily
Sniping isn't going to be very effective at night. Even if our MPs are dropped by just -25%, we have really bad chances of shooting anyone. Just forget about shooting through armor.
>>
>>52200508
>>52200555
Ah, I should note, we'll be using hybrid rules, Ballad for all our missile stuff, SoS for engaging and combat (obviously). Feel free to ask rules questions as they come up.
>>
>>52200508
>>52200555
You and your squad pick your way through the forest. One of the advantages of Havas, while they may not be as robust as horses, they have little difficulty navigating forests.

Soon, you find the edge of the camp. They've set up in a clearing, forming a roughly circular camp. Three rather large tents are dotted around, with the four covered wagons near the far side of the camp. Most of the horses are tied up on the left side of the camp, with a water trough. You can see two pairs of watchmen from this angle. It's hard to make out equipment from the distance, but you see one of the duos has a polearm of some sort, while his partner has a shield sitting next to him.
>>
>>52200821
Are we going to kill them all tonight, or just cripple them for later?
I have half a mind just to ride by the camp, throw a grenade or two at the horses so they cant move their cargo, then ride away laughing.

Regardless, We need an immediate plan. hm
>>
>>52200821
HAve some of your men take out the sentries with bows, throw flaming oil at the tents, try to pick off anyone coming out. At least after the sentries, no one should be in much armor.
>>
>>52201247
We don't have any oil with us, but we do have the grenades.
>>
>>52201268
How do the grenades work? Can we tie one to an arrow and shoot it?
>>
>>52200821
What are Havas?
>>
I'll probably miss this kickstarter. Would I be able to buy either a hard copy or pdf once this is all funded?

>>
>>52200821
>>52201185
Give each kal a grenade, including yourself. Bomb each of the two guard pairs, and the horses, simultaneously if you can.
Have the shulkas rush into the camp with the detonations as a cue, while regrouping with the Kals to identify and run down whoever is in command.
>>

>>52201363
The grenades are a burdinadin trick. When you pull a metal pin from the cap of the grenade, flame is produced spontaneously from the cap, giving you about 3 seconds to throw it before explodes. Due to how the grenade is laid out, it'd weigh down the arrow terribly (+2 TN), and you'd have to pull the pin and fire immediately, were you to rig it to an arrow shaft.
>>52201381
Havas are a subspecies of the Devekushu bird, bred to be riding birds, think Chocobos from Final Fantasy. They are generally poor mounts, being smaller, less hardy, and having less stamina than a horse, but Nisperadan Kals (Kal Amar's guerrila cohort chiefly) like them in certain roles, being quiet, swift, and maneuverable mounts.
>>
>>52201445
Awesome
>>
>>52201484
Might we throw one grenade at each group of sentries, then one at each tent?
>>
>>52201532
I feel like we'd get more use out of bombing the tents, then having the Kals move in on the guards. The Shulkas can move in to the camp to either help the Kals, or to round up any survivors from the tents.
>>
>>52201459
If we kill the horses, we can't take the loot.
>>
>>52201532
>>52201459
that's two votes for the "blow them all up" plan
>>
>>52201532
Potentially. Between you, >>52201567, and >>52201459, it's seeming like we'll split the cadre, with the three Kals (yourself being included), bombing the tents and guards, then moving into clear the camp with the Shulkas. Do you want to stay mounted to do so, or dismount and creep closer to the camp, into optimal throwing range?
>>
>>52201592
We need the speed from the mounts.
And I think giant chickens should disorient the enemy?
>>
>>52201614
It's freaky Not!Spain, they're used to it.

>>52201592
Assuming they're not sleeping armored, they'll still be at a disadvantage if they hear us on the mounts, whereas we will armored and fast and chucking grenades.
>>
>>52201614
>>52201663
Alright, so a mounted grenade flinging, then wheeling about to clear the camp. 3 Shulkas to a Kal, +1 to your own party. Sound right?

How necessary are the NPC cards? I might support the kickstarter to try it out but if they aren't important I'm not going for the higher tier.
>>

In the absence of a full monster manual, the NPC army decks provide a quick reference, both to the fluff and the mechanics, of common "enemy" types.

>>52201873
Very well. You give the orders, splitting up the grenades between yourself, Kal Shadi, and Kal Bahram. You will be leading the center, Shadi the left flank, and Bahram the right. The cadre forms up, and the charge begins. Give me two throwing rolls, ADR+MP, so 5+8. The first roll will be for the guard duo, and the second at a tent.
>>
>>52201904
You can always just make your own NPCs.

The night turns to day a split second, as elven magic goes to work! The watchmen at the front of the camp are reduced to pulp, and the tents are ripped apart. However, due to the shoddy throws of your compatriots, it is not the coup de grace you'd wished it was. As the lines of riders wheel about, some survivors struggle out of the tatters of fabric and flesh. Along with them, some fully armed and armored men come out of the center wagon. Why they were already armed is a mystery. Your squad is going down the center of camp, and you can either finish off some of the tent survivors, or engage the armed wagoneers before they engage the others.

Very well.

The cadre's 3 prongs finish their turn, and charge into the midst of the camp. You rip your scimitar from its scabbard, selecting a survivor to run down. In the moon's light, you can see the man, bloodied and ragged from the explosion, still had the presence of mind to throw on his morion, pick up his rodela, and draw his espada. These are professionals to the core. A second before you reach him, he realizes you've selected his neck for the chopping block!

The bodkin punches right through the mail, the arrow slamming straight into the man's shin. He drops, screaming. The shulka, his left arm hanging limply at his side, scrambles to his feet, drawing a dagger and quickly finishing the screaming man. Arrows scream in from the left and right, and the rest of the men become pin cushions under your assembled cadre.

The lagorians are defeated, and the prized wagon awaits you. What shall you do?

You dismount to check on the man personally. He's sat himself down, undoing his ventail to pant in pain (you recognize the man as Reza, one of the younger recruits you've trained). He tries to wave you off as you probe his arm, but nonetheless lets you feel for the break. It's in the upper bicep, but nothing came through the skin. Feels clean, he'll fight another day.
>>52203642
The Shulkas have already fallen into the task of finishing the wounded, and your Kals stride up to meet you. You see Bahram's squad is two short, but Shadi seems to have kept hers intact.

"What do you want us to do with the wagon?" Bahram rumbles out from behind his mask, pointing at the cart so many men died to protect with his Kilij.

No, of course not.

You order your men to finish tiding up, and head to check the wagon. As you step over the bodies of the dead, you notice the armed men aren't wearing Lagorian equipment. The Lagorians favor the cuirass and shield, whereas these men were wearing mostly full mail, wielding polearms. Curiously, one even has a military fork. You set the thought aside however, and step up into the wagon.

Inside, alone aside from some cushions on the floor and a lantern, sits a steel bitch. A Lagorian invention during one of their inquisitions. This must be the cargo. Why would Lagorians have been transporting this to the Mendiak elves? You dismount once more, ordering the wagon to be hitched up, and prepare to set out.

A couple of minutes later, the cadre and the wagon are leaving the forest. Your cadre is alert, eyes peeled for any sign of Lagorian reinforcements, however unlikely. Bahram looks uneasy, perhaps fearing punishment for his sloppy work in the raid. You don't think he'll be in to much trouble, but Amar demands the best of his cohort.

Behind you hear a loud crash, and Reza's loud cursing. You turn to look, seeing that one of the wagon's wheels has come off. You ride back to help, and as you and one of the Shulkas pick up the lost wheel, you hear a rattling from inside the wagon. The bitch must have fallen over.

The rattling gets louder.

You hear metal strain and rip. The wagon sinks further on into the dirt, as if it suddenly took on more weight.

Then you hear the howl. Loud. As loud as your grenades. Your throat tightens, your ears ring, every hair on your body a needle.

Then you hear the howl answered.

Oh god damn it, Jimmy removed that bit from the Updated Weapons Chapter and so when I removed the old weapons chapter in favor of the new, it got removed

I'll add it as part of the Hard quality (since it'd be dumb if wearing a scarf gave you +5 AVB vs. fists) at some point, written it down in the Etherpad

No, nothing. v1.2 is an incredibly old version that Jimmy apparently hasn't touched, so it's like the Australian took this and hid in a closet for 2 years and came out with some bizarre alternate SoS

Remember the last time you played D&D? You went into a dungeon and you killed a bunch of monsters, and your thief tackled some traps and then unlocked some chests and you got some loot.

But wait. Who locked those chests? Have you ever, in all your time playing games, found one bugbear or orc with a key ring for all of the randomly placed chests full of +1 swords that they could be using to fight you instead of keeping locked away?

Where are the keys. Seriously. I just sat down with two guys and baffled over this for ten minutes and, aside from plot-centric treasures in chests, mundane keys almost never come up. This is super retarded to me.
>>
>>52216743
I always consider the owner, even if theyre dead an gone, to each chunk of loot.
I can't say I've ever found the keys to the dungeon in another DM's game.
>>
>>52216743
Are you working on the adventure path already?
>>
>>52216856
Theyve been sitting on the idea for it for a couple years, IIRC
>>
>>52216743
Of course the bugbears can't get in the chests, they're neither smart nor strong enough to open them. The chests are all left by the people who made the dungeons, ancient Izagoni/Egyptian/Elven colonists/soldiers/magicians etc.

If it's a more modern dungeon than I don't fucking know.

Get better chests. :^)
>>
>>52217425
No. It's better in many ways and worse in a few than when you last played it. Arena doesn't take nearly as long to get money as it used to, but it still has the stupid permadeath system where if your first character dies the whole account is deleted. (Why can't another character you've made take over? There's no point to that permadeath.) The campaign hasn't been expanded beyond stage 5. Internal coding is better, vertical attacks are much faster than they were before. There's more color choices for armor available in Arena - but still no way to color your own armor how you want it to look or get any of the cool patterns you see some Practice enemies have. (Again, why? Disinterested game designers probably). And for some reason they locked away the different characters for campaign mode. Now you must start as unknown and unlock the other three, instead of being able to pick any of the four from the get go. This change made the game worse; those characters were de facto difficulty settings, but now those options are gone.

Yes, hidden chests recessed into walls and floors might work, but the type of chest you pictured probably wouldn't survive the thousand+ years that the dungeons been around for.

The only time I've heard of paper armor in Japan isn't a citable source, but was someone waxing on about how they tried to make a cheap bulletproof breastplate by gluing a shitton of paper and bamboo layers together.

The kind of armor he posted a picture of is metal. There's no way to argue against it being metal.
>>

How stupid. Everyone knows samurai armor was primarily wood, with metal being reserved for the richest men, those being the least likely to actually fight (hence the surviving examples of metal armor).

There's this tradition of islamic calligraphy from the early days of caliphates that has been living in master-student tradition to this day. Some graffiti dude got interested in in it, and wanted to learn from a master.

It went something like this:

The master deems you trainable, and then starts teaching.

He sits you down next to him, and then he shows you how to write some sentence that has been the first thing to learn trough out the tradition. It was something like "The god is great" or such, that has the all the basic rules of basic calligraphy. He shows it to you one time, gives you the paper, and tells you to do it yourself.

You came back in a week or two, with your best piece of calligraphy of the sentence.

He shows what you fucked up, and tells you to come back next week with your best piece.

This continues on, you come to him with your best piece of the same fucking sentence, he tells you what you fucked up and tells you to come back in a week with a new piece.

The graffiti dude says this took him two years before his master told him his sentence is good enough and it's time to start the actual training.

Actual training starts, this includes everything from making your own tools, to making your own ink, making your own paper and even how to marble paper correctly. Also all the actual calligraphy training.

At some point, your master asks you to do your "masterwork". It's a piece made by you, with your tools, your paper, your marbling, your sentence and style. If he approves of it, he himself will sign. By signing it he is basically saying "I deem this guy a master of the craft, trained by me." and the calligraphy piece is then literally the students masterwork and graduation paper.

After the masterwork is approved, the student can take on his or her own students.

The graffiti guy said that he had been studying for something like 5 years after the first sentence got approved, and he hasn't done his masterwork yet.

""This is the first lesson. Rab Yassir. It reads "Lord make it easy, don't make it difficult, Lord make it end well." The bottom line is the first half of the alphabet.

This was my teacher's first lesson when he learned calligraphy from his teacher Hasan Celebi, and Hasan Hoca's first lesson when he learned from Hamid Aytac, and that goes back at least 500 years. It is the gateway to calligraphy.

How it works is like this. Your teacher writes it for you as you watch on the first day. He cuts you a pen from a reed and prepares an inkwell and gives you some paper to use. You come back in a week with your attempt to copy it.

It will be shit. You don't have any idea what you're doing yet. You're being taught to see mistakes in your work through refinement of a single verse hundreds of times. You fill sheets with practice and when you think you've got it, you do it on nice paper and bring it to your teacher. He fails you. Write it again. This goes on for months or even years, writing the same verse and trying to pass.

It's like if you wanted to learn the violin, and so your teacher gave you a violin and a recording of a moderately complex phrase from Mozart, and told you to play it by ear. No instruction- you figure out how to hold the thing and make it play the way it should. You learn your tools by fucking up, figuring out how and why you fucked up and how to make it better.

It trains your eyes as much as your hand. Any shmuck can tell good calligraphy from bad. To tell good from great, and ultimately great from truly sublime is a skill that has to be learned and developed.

I like sushi a lot, but what I perceive when I eat sushi and what Jiro perceives are different things. He has trained his palette to detect tiny, infinitesimal subtleties in his craft. Thats what's going on here.

We are being taught to see those tiny subtleties in work that allows us to progress with our own work.

It took me 2 years to pass.""
