Painted my very first SC. I tried to use Duncan' tutorial on the Emperor's sword to get a flaminf sword and it turned out like shit so went back to dark metal. Kinda tempted to try and make the next sword volcanic like the base and shield, but I fear it'll end up looking like a club.

C&C always welcome, but do note that I know I missed highlights on the armour.
>>
>>52192698
I would recommend staying away from pure white if you are just starting to paint.

white is very hard to paint, especially on dark models, its tempting, but usually does not work

go with grey instead.

decent, but the yellow seems thin

Im sure you applied like 10 trillion coats of yellow, but the real trick is to start with a darker yellow and work up to a lighter yellow, it reduces the ammount of coats ten fold.

Crazy Whale-stormbird guy here. That project's been stopped dead by £80 shipping on a £70 model, so Fuck That Shit, but I've had yet another idea.
Trying to figure out whether the Manta or the Stormbird would be a simpler thing to build, since I think the Manta would lack all the fancy doors and interiors on the real one, being a cross between a Manta, an airship and the Avengers Helicarrier. Idea is something like an Admech Guns of Icarus Mobula (pic related). Ideas, guys?
Also, any Imperial gun that has similar stats to the S5 AP5 6 shot guns, since it's got SIXTEEN of them mounted.

These models are so big you don't have to be that exact with size, it's not like anyone's going to struggle to draw line of sight to a flying TITAN.

I still haven't worked out a secondary colour for my Genetor Mechanicum. Using Duncan's SoS armour bronze plus Nikhilakh oxide for metal, what works with that and looks mad sciencey?

Just getting back into this shit now that I have disposable income for the first time in like ten years. Just got underway with painting some test minis to experiment with highlighting and get my eye in again, and it's dawned that it's going to be a bitch to gauge my thinning from painting Dark Angels Green over black spray.

Maybe I'll build another test marine and do him in Angels of Absolution livery where I can tell if I've overdiluted before I do the second coat.

>>52194614

Really depends on the level of conversion there, bub. If you get rid of most of the third Legion markings and some of the extra Aquila, it should be doable. Some lore autists might get miffed though, but that's the price to pay for any conversion work.

>In a similar vein any goof alternatives kr conversions to the dreadknight?
I don't know of ANY third party kitz for it, but I've seen many a man cover up the "pilot" and/or replace it with a sarcophagus ala a dreadnought.and fluffing it like a psuedo-Contemptor, pic related. Other than that, you could try green stuffing over the pilot and making it look just like a massive Grey Knight (that is to say a massive Grey Knight without a smaller Grey Knight piloting him).

Probably because they're supposed to be CHAOS spess muhrines anon, and in that regard, they look pretty damn close to the new Kharn. Lack of backpacks aside, I can see a Berserker re-release looking pretty damn similar to the lad rocking the topknot in the back row's right side.

>>
>>52194348
Nah, no airbrush. I'll probably get one for vehicles at some point in the future.

It's covering well enough, but the tonal variation is too subtle to give a really clear indication of how the dilution is working. One of the objectives with these test pieces is to refresh my grip on how paints handle rather than just get a solid paint job, so something with a starker contrast like zandri dust followed by ushabti bone over black might be useful practice.

It's not helped by the mediocre lighting in my house to be honest. Got a studio bulb in the post which should help.

>What exactly is wrong with brush priming?

Nothing is wrong with it. I use Vallejo Surface Primer Black and it goes on super smooth and leaves no brush marks. Also I can control how much I put on so there's no loss of detail like with spray priming.

>>52196051
>Its pleb tier

What a pleb, I bet you don't use the single strand brush, that allows you to perfectly lay single molecules of paint onto the model, making sure you do not obscure any details. You just need to do a couple thousand layers and you get a perfect model in just under a year.

Brand new to painting models and just bought a couple ork sets (starter and kans) what are some essentail tools i should get and were do you suggest getting them (im in the usa if that helps) also should I stick to citidel paints and should I maybe invest in an airbrush? Ive been watching videos and reading books but I havent actually seen much yet on the actual materials usually.
>>
>>52197852
Airbrush is way too much for now.

Get some mid range brushes like Citadel or Army painter. Use Citadel paints since most of the tutorials are in them.

Tool wise get a knife you're comfortable with, a pair of clippers and some way to sand (paper or a file).

Don't try to run before you can walk. Learn the basics.
>>
>>52197912
Sounds like holding out on an airbrush is a good idea which I rather prefer going in completely new, What do you mean by mid range brushes though cause i don't know anything really I mean im considering getting the brush pack from games workshops site and maybe the mouldline tool thing. Any specifics on the knife or clippers cause currently ive got nothing and im open to suggestions. Even as far as sanding stuff down I actually haven't got a clue what you mean I dont think ive seen anyone doing that in any of the vids ive seen so far but honestly from the last couples months of just lurking and reading I feel like I really do trust you guys on this sorta thing. Like Ive said ive been watching videos and reading a lot but im not really sure if any of those are actually suited for someone completely new to the hobby

GW are mid range. They're not unusable, not the best, they're just okay. A scalpel is the basic modeling knife, you use that to remove moldlines, don't buy a tool for it, it's a rip off.

Have you decided the color and painted anyon else for your army yet? If you're doing Ifists then year you should use black for the cape but do the armor yellow. The best way to find a good highlight color is to flip the color wheel and go one over, like I use a blue to contrast my cool pink Slaanesh marines and you should use a hot pink or blue for yours. Even then you should only due that to small details like wires, Id keep the cloak black or gray.

Great tutorial for beginners m8.

Duncan's charm (besides being likeable) is that he paints damn good models with the most basic techniques available, to showcase that anyone can do it. Hell his tutorials got me into the hobby, since I had never held a brush in my life and didn't think I could paint such crazy models. Hell there are some tutorials of his I really don't like, but I won't say he is a bad painter
>>
>>52201565
You are arguing with a b8er dude. Look at the evidence, whenever you call out anyones painting skills there they immediately send a pic to try and back up their "expertise" on a topic.

This dude has not.

Think about it, his ego is so large that he is willing to trash one of the hobbies greatest painters but not big enough to show off his own work.

b8
>>
>>52201290

Duncan is an excellent "basic" painter. Is there painters that are better out there, well of course there are, but is he a "bad" painter? Id say a long way from it.

Put it this way, had he been a bad painter, he wouldn't be in the videos to begin with. Is he like the guys over at painting Buddha? Hell no! But he gladly admits so, for instance when confronted why he never shows nmm he replies "Because I cant make that look good".
He knows his limits, and he knows he is here to show, not only new players, but the hobby as a whole that anyone can get a nice paint job if they put effort in to it.

Had we had the luxury of films like these when we started out, Im sure we not only would be better painters today, but also been able to enjoy playing fully painted a lot more often than we did in my youth!

So to conclude, to call Duncan trash is absurd. He is doing exactly what he´s supposed to! Painting good quality models that anyone could achieve if they put some effort in to it. He uses rigid painting techniques that has been around since the founding of this hobby, and don't expect anyone to buy an airbrush or master blending techniques in a day. And he executes these techniques pretty damn solid as well. But if you want to venture deeper in to the realms of becoming a better painter, there sure are loads of channels that can be reached with the click of a button, but the fact that these chancels exists doesn't make your statement a fact. It doesn't make Duncan less of a painter so to speak.

I only ever mostly use washes just to fill in recesses like they are intended. Also use black wash over grey highlights over black just to tone them down to a nicely flowing transition.

>>52201290
Faggots like this cunt here don't know what they are talking about. So long as the end product looks good it doesn't matter how you achieved it.

The fact is some people use washes and do it poorly while others use them and do it well, at the end of the day it comes down to skill.

I have yet to play a game just for someone to grab one of my minis and hold it directly to their eye in search for an error. All of them are gonna hold it 1-2 feet from their face.

The most important things when it comes to these minis is to make it look dynamic and to have great contrast, washes help immensely for contrast but it should not be relied on entirely. Wash>Then layer>then layer again>Then keep layering until the contrast is at the max.
>>
>>52201780
Good, good, I do the same deal. Id drybrush the gold and then silver after your wash and then move in to touch up the details. Finally you do highlighting and touching up, and then freehanding.

Sounds like you have a shitty friend though, maybe don't be friends with cunts or maybe learn how to take banter and banter back. Fact is if you have a well painted army then you have a well painted army. Point I was trying to make is that it doesn't matter how you do it, just do what's right for you. I know people that trash on airbrushing cause they think it's cheating, but at the end of the day it's a means that can produce amazing looking armies but it's also made shitty looking ones to, again, it comes down to skill.

Find what works for you, then fucking abuse it. There is no one way to make an army look great.

This is why Tabletop Standard is a meaningful term around here. There are people in these threads who are aiming for display tier, and there are people getting their armies painted.

Also, if amateur watercolourists, digital artists and oil painters produce art, we totally do as well.
>>
as someone who doesn't post here often, and only aspires to tabletop quality: this shit is art when it's done up to be that. until that point, though (or at least VERY close to it), it's not art. it's a hobby.

Correct. This is all part of the decline where people with talent are thrown in with those who don't. Everything is subjective so nothing can be good.

Why learn to be a better painter when you can be called a God tier painter for simply throwing ink over a base coat?

Model painting is art, but you are not skilled enough to be a critique.
>>
this thread is shit
>>
In light of this discussion, what tiers of painting do you think there are?

For me it goes:
Tourney standard (3 colors and a wash)
Tabletop (the model is based, shaded, and highlighted. Retains quality from 12+ inches)
High tabletop(same as above but highlights are more difficult and precise, blending and other techniques displayed. Retains quality from 6-12 inches away)
Display (same as above but done to an expert level. Detail effects like glows and blends really seem to to pop. Highlights are crisp and bright without being overpowered. Base is impressive but tasteful. Retains quality from 6 inches away)

But you didn't, because you didn't understand what you weren't doing enough to not do it in a compelling way.
>>
>>52202292
just because I didn't understand what I wasn't doing enough to not do it in a compelling way doesn't mean that it's art because someone did.

just because most people didn't think to shit in other people's mouths doesn't mean that scat porn was a good idea.
>>
>>52202219
I agree with all of that. High table top though for me is tabletop except multiple layers that all blend in to the highest point. When I paint armies my basic troops are Table top while my elites and such I try to paint high-tier.

Display tier sounds about right. I imagine it having as very little to no washes at all cause at that point, you're gonna want your paint to be as controlled as possible.
>>
>>52202336

>>
>>52202443
Oh, in that case, I agree.

>modernism and postmodernism are shit

I understand what you are trying to say, however it's fine not to like it, but if you are gonna say it's not art, consider the following.

I agree that there are numerous "artist" out there that have jumped on this bandwagon just to try and get signed and have their trash sold to millionaires who care more about the name on a painting then the work itself. However there are artist out there who do this "shit work" but are actually legit artists that have scrap books filled with fantastic work, people who spent years and years trying to perfect their skill through many means.

For me to call something art is to look at the person who created it. Are they skilled, are they experienced, is what they created meant to be art.

Thus, its like saying your average beer-drinking American, enjoying a cold Budweiser on a hot day, is qualified to enter a quality check for high quality brown ale. >Uh, is this normal?

Let ya in on a secret anon the only active stripping ingredient in SG is the alcohol last i looked its only got 5% that shits evaporated after the first night, its literally the WORST stripping agent but the go to answer for people too scared to use effective ones. So here we are.

The rest of simple green cleans by being a surfactant so making things slippery like soap its not meant to strip anything and it really doesnt very well.

Dont believe me read up on the ingredients, at this point I half believe its a viral campaign by SG.

Use dot 3 brake fluid or dettol or something with some power. Dont get sucked into wasting your time, money, and elbow grease pretending SG works much better than dish soap and water.
>>
>>52202886
>dot 3 brake fluid

Don't do this. Even this retard is smart enough to notice Simple Green's stripping ingredient is alcohol but he's too stupid to tell you to just use common and inexpensive rubbing alcohol and instead use something totally inappropriate that's used to keep stainless steel brake lines clean.

That said, OEM brake lines are rubber so brake fluid is still safe enough to strip most models, but why bother with such a hazardous and dirty material.
>>
>>52202895
You act like it cant be handled completely safely with minimal effort and eats paint quickly and plastic and resin very slowly.

Hey im fine with rubbing alcohol, im mostly trying to inform him SG is bad for stripping.

As for break fluid you can buy a jug for 8 bucks and reuse it forever so depending on how much you strip its cheaper.

If your not comfortable using it thats fine, I can understand.

I have a bunch of unpainted/unassembled FW 30k World Eaters, a couple of friends are trying to get me back into 40k. Would it be a total cop out to do a siege of Terra WEs army with full khorne imagery and the red/gold scheme but base it all on mkiv armour? I've seen a lot of 'heresy' armies made up of just tac marines in mkvii and it always looks slack af to me. Is it the same?
>>
Had some models soaking in dettol for two-three days now. Will it get any easier to scrub if I leave them longer? This is going to be excruciating at the rate it's going. I wouldn't mind but it's not even my fuckup, my friend gave me some old models.

Nevertheless this is turning out to be a really effective exercise in my own painting discipline because I never want to do this ever again.

You have to buy the old style of flock with the big chunks that is kind of like sand but made of maybe cork or something, then you paint the chunks goblin green and drybrush a highlight on it.

This is the true goblin green base.
>>
>>52204331

You should paint them however you want. A 30K WE army is almost 100% compatible with 40K, either with some counts-as or using it as vanilla marines for the non-Chaos vehicles.

The red and white WE scheme is the coolest.
