I'm learning D&D (5e) and I have the gist of character making, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to make my character. I wanted to basically make a weapon and armor master. A character who's good with pretty much any weapon and armor he picks up. Whether it's a sword, bow or javelin.
I think a barbarian would suit my needs, but the character I am tranlsating to D&D wore heavy armor. Any suggestions?

I noticed fighter specializes in one particular sytle of combat. Should I just get the +1 AC style?

Yes

Go Champion and get the 1 ac ability, yes.

The thing that stuck out was that fighters specialize in one thing it seems, Where as barbarians get the boost on rage for all weapons.

Yeah, what you've described IS a fighter. If you can I'd recommend throwing a couple more quirks in there or you'll end up playing vanilla mcvanillason

He's my MMO character who I've played in every MMORPG I joined from Ultima to TOR, to FFXIV. I have a petty good grasp on what his personality is.

I meant gameplay quirks. Unless you're happy playing a very standard fighter, at which point do that.

Battlemaster combat techniques literally work with any weapon (even ranged ones). What you're looking for is Battlemaster Fighter.
Well what you're looking for is an Order of the Immortal Mystic.
