How do we turn Touhou a Bullet Hell Series into a Tabletop Series?

Touhou characters are constructed in a way that makes them very non-intuitive to use in a conventional tabletop game. You have characters like Reimu who canonically have less experience (and by extension, level) than some random outside world lieutenant but is capable of fighting off gods and world-ending threats fighting alongside fairies that have commoner-level HP by resurrective immortality fighting alongside reality warpers whose upper limit of strength might include rewriting the laws of the universe and high-school girls with psychic abilities.

Sure, this all works when they're limited to spellcard duels, but once you need to move onto a plot where following spellcard rules ISN'T feasible (like Forbidden Scrollery) the whole campaign falls apart because either you steamroll the encounter because they're hopelessly outmatched against you or the encounter goes "heh, nothin' personal kid" and turns you into paste.

Maybe, a sub mechanic would be whether or not spellcard rules are in effect as something that is reflected by your actions: yes, you /could/ just murder the three fairies of light in cold blood in order to retrieve the yin-yang orb because you can't seem to beat them in a spellcard duel, but that might come back to haunt you later when the oni you're dueling decides that since you don't follow the rules he doesn't need to either and he'll try to clobber you, or you might cause an incident later down the line forcing the big Rei to intervene. One of the major mechanics would not only be having special abilities, but finding opportunities where you can use said special abilities without upsetting the balance of the setting, or without anyone being able to point it back at you.

Either way, it wouldn't be friendly to martials.

That would actually be a nice risk management mechanic.
Breaking the rules of a spell card duel ruins your reputation, and increases the chance that others are willing to break it against you.

It also gives a good reason to incorporate the "goofy friendships and tea parties" side of Touhou, as you want to make sure that you're always on the best possible relations with everyone else.
You want everyone to be your friend, respect you, or at the very least value you as a rival, just to make sure the situation doesn't get out of hand.

Dumping social stats or being a murderhobo is going to make the universe fight back, so to speak.

Amber RPG and Lords of Gossamer and Shadow use a diceless system. It isn't free-form entirely, because the stats are absolute; you have Strength (which includes martial arts, boxing, physical toughness and durability, and sheer might), Psyche (everything about the mind and psychic abilities to boot, though only minor ones), Endurance (not just the batter for all the other powers but also physical resilience, healing speed, and sheer stubborn willpower), and Warfare (any conflict, be it business meetings, lockpicking, still at weapons, and anything else that isn't covered by bare handed fighting).

Luck is taken care of by good and bad Stuff. You have bad stuff, the world is a dark, dismal place, and if anything bad happens, it happens to YOU. That's your bad luck. Good stuff is a happy, kind, generous universe, with little or no conflict. Which also means it's fucking boring as all hell.

So....you have powers that run off your stats. The more power you have, the better your stats are, the greater the threat you are....but just because you have a lot of power and a high stat doesn't mean you're going to win. Somewhere along the way, you will deal with someone who has some better stats than you. And if you don't play your cards right, even with two or even three top notch scores....that fourth score can be your downfall. Especially if you have bad stuff. So Reimu who might have a 6 in strength, 5 endurance, 3 psyche, and 5 warfare can still have a chance against Yuugi's 1 in strength, 2 endurance, 6 psyche, and 3 warfare. She just has to be smart about how she deals with Yuugi.

You shake up and throw down a load of plastic bits down on the floor each round - this is your enemy's bullet pattern. You then have to roll a marble through the obstacle course you've created. I tried to make a card game based on Touhou once...

Each player would control one of the three main heroines from the game (Reimu, Marisa, or Sakuya) with the possibility to add new characters in the future. The game was heavily inspired by MtG but it tried to add some differences. Instead of having a rarity, each card had a "swarm" value that forced the player to add fairy cards to the deck as a handicap to compensate for its power. Players would use cards from their hand to pay costs instead of depending on resources such as lands. Finally, almost every card had the chance to work as a counter in a rock-paper-scissors system, each card had one of three types that opposed to another type.

A tabletop RPG does not automatically mean a level based RPG. This is Pathfinder autism thinking. There is a lot of point buy system which can be used to accurately represents any Touhou character. Almost all Touhou characters had M&M sheets last time I've checked.

Even without that, Exalted does varying level of power extremely well. Touhou is already almost an Exalted setting anyways.

I just find his style to be both cool and cute, I love the way he draws boobs and I also love the way he draws mean looking girls, but, unfortunatelly this goes side-by-side with the ballbusting stuff, which I find cringy at best and repulsive at worst (like in those images with the testicle eating stuff)

But hey, I thought this thread was about turning Touhou into an RPG.
I tried to do that a while ago, but I gave up. I tried to adapt the crazy powers the characters have into something that could be used in battles, or outside of battle, since I was also considering making something that revolved less around battles, but I just couldn't understand some of the powers they have, like Kanako's power to "create sky". That's some Eldritch stuff I couldn't wrap my mind around.

They can live outside but they're an endangered species. Gensokyo is specifically made as a habitat for youkai.

The bigger question is what kind of humans would be willing to live there when most of the youkai there are very anti-human and think of them as food or annoyances. There are a few humans who are just as strong as most youkai like the protagonists, but most are just regular humans with no way to defend themselves if something happened to the human village, and the only thing keeping the humans safe is a shaky truce and the promise that all the strongest youkai will gang up on anyone who dares break that truce. It's really not a human-friendly place at all.

I'm not him but if I'm correct, you scatter small plastic danmaku token actiss a table, then the opposing player flicks a marble that has to roll through the danmaku without touching a bullet, you have multiple tries at this it seems.
I don't know how you'd regulate the marble though, it seems easy to just flick it hard and have it blast over or through the danmaku pieces, and if not that then you're relying dumb luck that the opponent creates a danmaku wall with a straight line from one side to the other somewhere. If that criteria is met I can't see why it would take multiple attempts to clear, or why multiple attempts would make it easier, or at least improve your chances of breaking through.

Shitposting aside going to war for the purpose of being know has a chance to backfire if people become aware of the intention of war. Worst case people will actively try to scrub any kind of info about youkai from records or memory to remove them entirely.

Speaking of scrubbing this kind of method feels quite similar to a setting where a certain leader's attempt to supress supernatural entities via censorship and removal set in a distant fictional future. The human one, I mean, not the youkai.

Quests can come in the form of not only trying to resolve incidents, but causing them yourself if you're a youkai. After all, it's basically how they "eat."

I want to cause an incident and then get my ass kicked by the miko or the witch.

Anyway, I know that danmaku is central to the Touhou world, but perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to... fudge that a bit for the sake of making a game? I mean, that's what they did for the fighting games. IIRC, it's stated in the spellcard rules that physical strikes are, if not forbidden, then very much frowned upon. Even Meiling and Youmu don't resort to those tactics in normal duels. The only one who does is Marisa, and they basically just let her because "it's Marisa."

Then again, the point of a roleplaying game is to immerse yourself in the essence of what the setting is.

You need a good middle ground, its just that finding one that works on a table is pretty tricky. So really the question that needs to be asked isn't should we fudge it. It's how hard can we fudge it and have it still feel right?

It's finding a balance between roll to win duel, "yay wasn't that mechanically rewarding?", and lets spend several hours trying to figure out something best handled by a program. Something that gives a player meaningful choices to make during a bout, but isn't bogged down by them.

Well, earlier suggestions were to make spellcard battles a component of the overall setting but not the only interaction avalible to characters, with subdivisions between spellcard combat and regular combat as well as social interactions that have nothing to do with fighting and just might be what saves you from certain death more than any combat abilities would.

And of course, quests can be things outside of the incident dichotomy such as simply exploring a new area that suddently popped up and hoping that you don't get caught in the crossfire when the Shrine Maiden comes over and become spellcard fodder. I imagine the way a bunch of fairies and human outsiders experience Gensokyo would be vastly different to the way native youkai exterminators and youkai themselves would, with different accomidating goals; like, Cirno wants you to help her make her shaved ice buisness successful or the Human Village elder needs someone to send a message to Youkai mountain and decided to chose your party, or you're tasked to aprehend what people fear to be a powerful youkai immune to traditional extermination methods and is revealed to ultimately be a platypus, or an outside world soldier has stumbled through the gate and the only people that can understand him are the fairy maids of the SDM and they have to find a way to get him home. Touhou is a remarkably flexible setting, as noted by the wide variety of topics covered by the manga.

Alarmingly, it's implied by the works featuring Renko and Maribel that it isn't just Youkai that are dying in the outside world due to advances in technology, but nature itself seems to be on the verge of collapse which is why you get the decidedly non-youkai fairies and endangered species like the Japanese Wolf showing up in Gensokyo as well, and if Seihou being part of Gensokyo's continuity is still canon, eventually mass desertification follows and at least 90% of Earth's vegetation is destroyed.

you'd think, but there are certain things that are very much not youkai. For example, tewi and chen are youkai because they are creatures that managed to extend their lifespan to the point of gaining magical abilities. Youkai-fication, if you would.

But fairies for example aren't youkai, but their own unique thing. In this case, the hakutaku is one of these as well. They are a step removed from the system, working to make a status quo of sorts with their abilities, and helping people of regal bearings. A hakutaku was even the one to tell the chinese yellow emperor about all the supernatural evils of the world, which was written down into the bai ze tu, a famous manuscript since lost to time.

Basically, hakutaku are closer to the side with shiki eiki and kanako than for example tewi, or chen.

Not really. While she interacts with everyone as a human, as a hakutaku she's only really seen around keine and those from eientei, except for the specific case of attacking the heroine in IN. As a hakutaku, she's only known to interact with those people, which makes sense for kaguya, and says a good deal for mokou's character.

As a human, she interacts with the human village, while still fulfilling her role as a guide by acting as teacher.

I think combat could be nice if it's handled like in the fighting games. You have your various normal moves that all work differently and at different ranges and you have spellcards as special moves.
Would it feel too bad to reduce danmaku to this level where it is basically as appropriate as a punch and where not every spellcard actually takes the form of a bullet storm?

Both Magical Astronomy and Neo-traditionalism of Japan state that natural vegetation is becoming increasingly difficult to find, with synthetic plants being used as a substitute in many cases, such as decorating cities. For reference, in real life, areas such as Tokyo and Kyoto normally have sections of the city where vines and trees and such grow as part of the vista, and presumably by Maribel/Renko's time something has changed that these cities can no longer support actual plantlife.

Its more about how one acts and why they do so than it is about the actual regal status. One can be noble in inclination without being actually noble.

There's a logic puzzle attached to hakutaku and their abilities. Does a hakutaku appear to those that are noble, or does a hakutaku's guidance make them so? Power over history is no small matter after all. so It becomes a matter of potential in the person in question.

Using mokou as an example, her motives were impure to start with, but after killing an otherwise innocent man, taking the elixir, and wallowing in self-hatred for a long time, even going crazy, she shaped up, learned skills (sorcery, as she called it), and is using them currently to help people, despite knowing its a futile effort on her part. One of her spell cards is even an homage to the man that she killed, realizing far too late the mistake she made.

A double edged sword isn't a great example. In fact, thats sort of the point. A youkai is something that needs to be "Handled" correctly, or shit goes awry.

hakutaku are benevolent, even regarded as guardian spirits, warders of disease, and other equally good shit. Which is why i said she is closer to the god side of things than the youkai.

What i mean is, there's no actual classification that fits her. So youkai is just used as a blanket term. Hakutaku are a breed all their own, well apart from youkai.

To put it in more touhou terms, hakutaku are beings that are "Worshipped" or gather faith. Youkai are "Feared" and gather that self-same fear as sustenance.

Rumia is a youkai, its just not easy to classify her specifically. She's the sum fear of "the dark" or "what lurks in the dark", which is a very primal fear. if you buy into the EX-rumia thing, its got more plausibility to it than you'd think.

So far as keine goes though, the only time's she's called a youkai are by other characters. Her profiles go out of the way to call her a half beast, Aya's article is skewed because she likely doesn't even care, PMiSS is known to be faulty in area's, and even yukari goes out of her way to correct reimu, albeit in a roundabout way.

In all instances, its someone else calling her a youkai, often people that couldn't care less.
