Oh, totally. It's an anime fantasy sword, the proportions are as exaggerated as the rest of the art style. Although that said, I want to criticize the narrowness of the bit that connects the blade to the guard, and that's the historically accurate part, apparently.

Yeah, but a lot of manga and anime in Japan literally won't even be touched by publishers without adding moe of some kind, I shit you not.
The dwindling market for anime in Japan forces them to increasingly narrow their demographics, and sex-starved shut-in guys with disposable incomes is a very viable one still.

In case someone wants to read the fantasy manga that OP thinks isn't realistic enough. I think it's good, but the art style takes some getting used to. Some serious baby-face going on in the early chapters. Chapter 5 is the first actual story arc.
