In 5e, the DM can rule that a player can substitute their strength score for their charisma score when making an intimidation check.
What are some good ways a character with 20 str can try to intimidate someone?

You grab them by the throat and haul them bodily off the ground.
If you want to be more subtle then flexing, threatening posture, looming, etc.

Just straight-up lifting them off the ground and throttling them a bit. Why mess with a classic?

Doesn't that require a grapple check?

Your having them make a check anyway, call it intimigrappling and be done with it.

Intimigrappling is much more likely to have guards called on your ass than subtly flexing and giving someone the mean look.

Then flex and loom. Split the seams on your shirt with your bulging muscles for all I care. Intimidation is intimidation.

I'd say give them bonuses or penalties based on the situation, if a hulking barbarian is trying to intimidate a scrawny farmer he should get a big bonus, if a scrawny bard is trying to intimidate a huge soldier he should get a big penalty. Like wise if the intimidator has a weapon and the intimadatee does not then he should get a big bonus as well as vice versa. Also situations like having a subject subdue and having sufficient torture methods would also grant bonuses.

Casually snapping or bending metal objects that really shouldn't snap or break.

Simply placing a hand on someone's shoulder when you're a head taller and over 50 pounds of pure muscle heavier can make a significant difference.

I am reminded of Sherlock Holmes. Guy tried to intimidate him by bending a poker, he waits till the guy's gone and then bends it back.
Just punch stuff.

I forgot about that! Though as the party member in charge of mending clothes I wouldn't much appreciate that approach.
