The DM for my monthly game that are pretty well behaved except when the delivery guy comes and they freak out trying to protect the house.

I had two cats growing up who lived in the garage, walked about the property when I was a kid.
They would come for petting when I got hurt or cried over dumb kid shit.
They would always be around if you were outside (prolly cuz they desperately craved attention)
One of them would wait at the bus stop when I got home from school and walk with me back to the house.

Sure animals can learn to respond to human expression but only dogs have the process built in from birth and have the most complex understanding ( next to humans themselves).

People think a pet is just conditioning but it's actually a long process of biological temperment and intuition as well. No other animal has the history of breeding that dogs do. It isn't anthropomorphism, we have literally forged the animal into a human reflection with similar emotions and all.
