Do you think being set on fire at a point in the past would give a magic user any special insight into fire spells? The idea of a burn-scarred pyromancer kinda appeals to me.
I doubt it, would getting stabbed give you more insight into making weapons? Unless there was some supernatural shit attached then nope, if anything it would limit it since he knows the pain it can inflict and might subconsciously hold back because of that.
I like the idea of the opposite
Someone who had been badly burned before becoming a water mage, or someone who almost died of frostbite becoming a fire mage

I mean, it's fire magic. It's supernatural because of the magic part.
Step 1: light self on fire
Step 2: ???
Step 3: profit

>being set on fire
Yesss

Perhaps. But I could also see a pyromancer who lost control once, during their training, and that's where the scar is from. I could see that a lot more likely than getting 'special insight'.

Demon cult rituals usually involve things like that, yes.
Ritualized self immolation for power, for example

It seems like a cool idea.

Traditional fire, no.
Now say the fire had just been a tiny bit sentient....or had a fire elemental baby.
That fire would live off the user, and that would absolutely enhance fire magic in return. And naturally, you could be burned, always on fire, or simply glowing at all times caring for super special sentient fire.
Not in itself, no. But gaining insight into fire magic and using it before you have gained much insight could probably result in you being set on fire by accident a few times along the way.
If anything it would probably give them PTSD towards fire like in FFX where Rikku had a thunder spell cast on her during her childhood but grows up to be scared of storms.

Unearthed Arcana did this with the Spelltouched feats.
The prerequisites were to be exposed to certain spells.

Sure, why not? It's not like the "touched by their encounter with__" trope is unheard of.
That totally works as fluff or backstory if nothing else.
In 3rd edition d&d unearthed arcana they even had some supplemental rules for "spelltouched feats" that gave some sort of bonus from the lasting effects of an encounter with magic which your gm may be willing to somehow adapt to your game.
