I'm making a space opera setting. I already have the main human group (basically the Space EU) and a handful of other human and alien factions. However, I need a big bad alien empire from the past that's already been defeated by the Space EU. I just can't decide what to base it on. I don't want Space Nazis because that's been done too much, and Space Mongolians would require way too much mobility for the physics of my FTL travel to allow. What other options are there?

I mean, you could always do space mongols as space-dwellers lording over planet-bound tributaries. They don't even need to be that mobile.
Swap out the sky-worship for space-worship and maybe have them model their society on a starship's command structure and you're set.

Space feudal France then.
Basically think what happen when a criminal boss gets to rule his own space region with his underlings and you get it.
The nation is beaten but all their men are spread around your setting, putting in works for a new nation to rise up from the ashes.
