Why would a school hire murderhobos?
>>
>>51971941
Murderhobos would have a wealth of experience with strange magic and unique solutions to problems.

The school has a lot of cutthroat in-fighting behavior.
It may or may not have just underwent a hostile takeover by an evil cult.
It's built atop ancient ruins. The libraries, laboratories, etc. gradually fill with monsters.
It's socially acceptable to kill (mediocre) students.
>>
>>51971941
>Why would a school hire murderhobos?
Practical experience against the Dark Arts.
>>
>>51971941
Milfy teachers.
EXP every student alive each day.
Twice as much for excursions.
Learn new magics and keep honorary scrolls.
Golem crafting in arts and crafts.
>>
>>51971941
Lack of funding. It's the magical equivalent of an inner city high school and the players was all it could get
>>
>>51971941
It's a technical college and they need industry experts to teach instead of academics.
>>
>>51971941
The players teach advanced combatives
The school is in a remote and dangerous area, prone to assault from enemies, natural and unnatural, so in addition to teaching they are also the security force
While the schools leadership finds the players sometimes hard to control, and sometimes loathsome, they have survived incredible odds, and that kind of skill (or luck) doesn't come about very often

>Why would a school hire murderhobos?
In the real world, sometimes certain experts in certain fields become honorary professors despite not having a doctorate. If the PCs are murderhobo's, I imagine it'd be something like an art college inviting over a really famous artist who never attended any artistic academies himself and just drew doodles in class as a kid.

>Pff, what is this shit? Books? You learn your magic from books?
>Listen kiddos, you don't know what magic is until you're half drunk in a tavern, just got robbed and need to do party tricks just to pay for that night's rent
>"Specialization"? "Basic training"? "Cost-benefit analysis"? What is this, my tax returns? Just cast explosions or whatever.
>I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is that you're graduating today. The bad news is only ten of you will survive.

They got fed up with having the fucking dark Lord and his pet monsters show up every year and ruin the schools reputation/ increse insurance premiums.
>>
>>51971941
Alternately, because the murderhobos were the ones to sponsor/create the school. Consider it a Leadership perk or otherwise a way to mold potential followers (or just because they think the education is necessary and 'reasonable' to support).
Twilight exalts deciding to educate Creation into a new Wondrous Age. Also, it only takes so much tweaking before Ms Frizzle and the Magic School Bus becomes a Twilight taking the class out into the Wyld for practical experience.
The Academy could also be part of various political intrigue in addition to a number of esoteric topics. Compete against other schools (or even within your school if against other branches or rivals within your own branch).
>>
>>51971941
>>Setting is pretty much Harry potter + Mage: The ascension and awakening
The players are basically pic related
Weirdos who have spent their entire careers fighting guys even crazier and more deadly than them and lived to tell about it
They would have an immense amount of experience with dangerous and unpredictable magic and practical application of spells

Though in my opinion those types of characters would make more since in a school focused on combat or military training

WIZARD FIGHT CLUB

But a more serious answer, practical application of magic in combat and defense would be incredibly useful.

The students are a bunch of softies and the headmaster wants them better prepared to fight the dark lord.
They gotta toughen them up, without injuring them too gravely or giving them too much PTSD. Acceptable losses are allowed however
Bonus points for having to deal with a snotty "chosen one" and their friends

The players are somewhere between pic-related and >>51975380

Jack probably is the best example of this type of scenario
A convicted felon of varying degrees of crazy who has spent her entire life murdering dudes, broke out of the most secure prison in the galaxy, murdered more dudes, helped save thousands of human colonists, and helped thwart an advanced alien civilization's plans for galactic genocide
Of course you would want someone like that teaching your future Space Wizard Military officers everything they know

And it turns out that they were the bad guys?

This is actually a good idea. Since the Mage world is probably heavily divided by factions, clans, family afiliations, and intriuge, the academy can't trust its own teachers to be unbiased. If a teacher and a student are of the same faction/clan/affiliation, the teacher might give that kid answers to the test, or mark his attendance even if he's absent.

So what does the Academy do? They outsource their teaching positions to people without ties to the Mage world political clusterfuck, but who still have good experience with magical topics.

Think about it. Who would be a better teacher for Defense Against the Dark Arts than a Paladin who knows 12 different ways to protect against daemons? Who would be better at guiding beginner, unpracticed mages than a Hedge Witch who intimately knows all the mistakes beginner practitioners make, having survived all of them. Who would be a better history prefessor than a Dwarf Fighter who's seen ruins all over the globe and can decipher 8 extinct languages?

Magic is powerful and dangerous. Students are inexperienced.

It's actually very likely that staff would be required to have experience in combat and magical threats to make sure that problems and accidents don't get out of hand, heists and takeovers get thwarted, and the students stay safe. Whoever hires staff would probably make sure that applicants have experience subduing magical things before they even test the extent of their magical knowledge and teaching ability.

Alternatively (or simultaneously), you could establish the magic school's atmosphere amongst faculty as a kind of competitive hierarchy, like an Italian renaissance scenario: Different families, factions, and individuals, all trying to backstab their way to the top. The murderhobos could act as a kind of "police" team to settle faculty disputes/attacks, and/or end up unwittingly working for one of the factions to quell opposition and further that faction's ascension through the ranks of the school system.

Pic related: Sometimes it would really help a wizard to have a band of murderhobos around.
>>
>>51972208
I like this minus the cult idea.

If it's like hogwarts then there could be competing classes or organizations of mages who are always trying to one up each other and be the leading innovators in different fields, working together and against each other in practice and methodology.

The students are encouraged to deal with their competitors viciously and mercilessly, but are punished when it comes to violence and may face expulsion if it leads to death. Violence can be necessary, but it is often avoided because of the risk involved and the inability to physically hurt someone without having them know who you are.

With the players being teacher murderhobos, they have to have the mentality that as a teacher they have to boss these kids around and make them beat the other organizations of wizard at the school. You can have a plethora of different murderhobo types who would be able to do this. The only rule is that they can't get caught killing people or stealing information or goods.

Harry Potter is practically what I just explained. Great way to run a game.

Murderhobos are also really adept at killing people without getting caught and mucking about and doing what they want. Maybe certain mage sects are more comfortable with breaking the rules than others. I feel like you should make a lot of them, and have it be a big school with thousands of students in every age group. Perhaps there's a large turnover for teachers at the school because of its competitive nature, and it's expected that the teacher would get fired relatively quickly.

Will you let players do other things than teaching? Or do teachers also do jobs for groundskeeping, cleaning, and security? With a competetive and harder school you'll have to be able to control the droves of people going there. Kids are going to fuck each other over and steal from one another, and there needs to be more than a few elite teachers around in order to stop them. When you consider you're giving the kids gun
>>
>>51971941
Because students are just that clumsy.
>>
>>51971941
Because someone has to teach mundane subjects and it helps to have someone with experience stopping world ending plots when you're on a campus of magically charged, inexperienced, hormonally addled teenagers who are no doubt going to cause at least one small cataclysm during the semester. It might be handy to have your 'in case of magical apocalypse" team on hand.
>>
>>51971941
For a wizard, staying alive is a bit harder than one might expect, but these guys have mastered the art of not dying.
>>
"They've reformed themselves and they'll share their repentance and interesting life stories with our students" or "We're going to help them reform themselves."

Or because (some of) the wizards want to embarrass the murderhobos or their ethnic group or magical faction or race or species or whatever.
>>
>>51971941
They wouldn't. That's why the players lie on their resume.

The School makes students that weren't sponsored work as teachers for set period once they are fully qualified in order to work off their debt.

This would probably mean most of the actual teachers would be from backgrounds of limited means which would encourage noble students to push their boundaries as far as possible.

Most of the teachers probably don't want to be there, but it's teach for 5 years or be hunted down.

Also the school has been attacked by the neighbouring magic school several times and needs some killers on staff as protection.

Modify the above and you've kill la kill meets harry potter meets dnd.
