In the vast majority of cases I would say it's imitative learning. They don't have human figures in their lives who are emotionally close enough to them to clearly imitate, so they model their behavior after the animals in their lives instead. Echopraxia is what's considered "automatic imitation" because it's an involuntary behavior the pts have no control over. It's a basic feature of Tourette's and is visible in other mental disorders such as schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders.

There is literally no value in doing anything about this scenario whatsoever. Genie's father believed that she was retarded because she started walking late (likely due to a hip problem she had that her father refused to get her physiotherapy for) and had a semi-delayed development period that could be attributed to the strict silence policy that he maintained in the household that stunted her social development; however, he had no real evidence to back this belief up. The early records of her life, while sparse, indicated that she was on a mostly normal development path, although when she later was brought to the hospital for sickness potentially related to malnourishment, the pediatrician suggested she might have a developmental disability but that he couldn't make a conclusive diagnosis due to the illness. Rather than make a follow-up visit when she was well to get a proper assessment, Genie's father decided, "Yes, my baby is ABSOLUTELY RETARDED."

His mum died a few months after the assessment and he lost his shit completely, which is when the confinement and abuse started. Reading about how fucked up her dad was is interesting in itself because he was REAL fucked up.
