First module was kinda borderline, could have worked as a one-off, but it was more dungeon crawl than actual horror.

The others I've only skimmed over, but they were all just "this is a reference" rather than "roll for San loss." That said, I did like the module where the PCs go on a quest through the dreamlands and meet Abdul Alhazred, but it belonged in a different AP, not the "cosmic horror" one.

The first one was a serial killer in an abandoned asylum, which was cool in concept. But they didn't go far enough to make it actually scary.

The rest of the AP shied away from the truly horrific and unnerving in favor of "lolololol we read lovecraft too!" They wanted to write a "cosmic horror" adventure, but forgot what the second word altogether.

The fact of the matter is that Cosmic Horror and 3.X are fundamentally incompatible. The idea of cosmic horror is that these things exist outside any paradigm that a mortal can understand, and as such can never truly be threatened by humans. But the only way to represent "outside mortal paradigms" is to not stat it. If something in 3.X isn't statted then it's not a part of the game, it's just the DM being a dick. If it is statted then it can be killed. Including any large pieces of the mythos in Pathfinder means they're not what they are in the mythos, they're just a Pathfinder statblock with a stolen name.

This is true, but that doesn't stop you from running effective and interesting horror in the system; you just have to be more creative than pasting a popular name on a bucket of stats. You have to start out asking yourself how to scare the players, then figure out the mechanics from there.

After that you have to carefully control the information the PCs receive (and ensure your players don't meta game. Because if they have no way of peaking behind the screen and figuring out the monster's stats, then it is, for all intents and purposes, unstated.

Cthulhu is slightly different, because he's a Great Old One. He's still past the human scale, but he's still on /a/ scale. He can still technically be hurt, but at the same time there's a difference between "We've hurt him," and "We got past DR 20 and now we can hit him with whatever else." Mainly that in the first case "We've hurt him," should be instantly followed up with "Now let's get the fuck out of here while he's slow."

Exactly. They need to be enigmatic and fundamentally threatening. Not by virtue of having really big numbers, they need to be able to threaten the PCs even when the PCs have big numbers too.

A bit of an aside, but Mythic makes getting past DR painfully easy. A M1 Champion can build a critfishing build that shuts down DR for a turn basically every turn, with the caveat that it can't get past anything with fast healing or regeneration that can't be suppressed. Which, as far as I know, is just the Tarrasque.

Well that's kind of lame, are there any virtual world type shows where the main character isn't actually "trapped" in it?

So folks, decided to read through all the 3pp kineticist material we've got available.

Kineticist has now hit the 4-archetype-stacking mark: Elemental Scion, War Kineticist, Kinetic Knight, and Roil Dancer all stack, and the all synergize relatively well together. The result is a Strength-based, single-element beatstick/controller with a lot of options for taking on enemies, which I'm honestly rather interested in, because it seems neat.

What are your experiences with the Roil Dancer? It seems reasonable to me. With some of the items in Kineticists of Poryphyra 2 and 3, you could make up for not getting elemental overflow damage. As far as I know, the damage boosts are as follows:

Elemental Scion (ups you one step if you choose to spec into a single blast)
Ring of Elemental Strength (+1 Damage per die)
Vambraces of Overflowing Power (lets you add E. Overflow damage to K. Blade and anything else that doesn't add it normally)

Any thoughts on this? I might attempt building one at some point , if /pfg/ wants to run a game that would accommodate it.

I could even do this for the Dragon game or something. War Kineticist/Elemental Scion/Kinetic Knight/Roil Dancer or something. Just smack people with a sword made of ELEMENTAL ENERGYYYYY. It could be fun

The later seasons of Sword Art? I think the .hack anime could count as that too. I would say Konosuba, but he's still kind of trapped in the world. There's also Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki, but that's only a manga.

Quick question: running an eidolon for the first time on unchained variant. It's a low-level striker, pretty standard (bite/claws/rend). I just can't decide on what to do for feats. Obviously anything that fits for a melee fighter works well as long as it doesn't rely on weapons and there is an option to flex into something that uses skills since naturally my summoner is dumb as a brick.

Konosuba, Log Horizon and Overlord: in all three cases the game-like bits are actually that world/universe's physics. Bit of a spoiler but in none of the three is anyone stuck in a game, unlike the original season of .Hack

For example, in Konosuba, that card all the adventurers get (anyone could it's just a pretty useless expense for the average farmer) does in fact quantify all of those statistics in the manner of a status-screen. High-nobility and royalty are even fed a diet of high-XP and stat-boosting rare foods and monsters (something that's actually in common with all those xanxia/wuxia novels).

"Killing monsters makes you stronger" has long been understood and is the common sense of the world; and thus like anything else that's well documented, it's been standardized, deciphered, experimented with and eventually even regulated.

Something far too many western tabletop RPGs tragically fail to consider when they go around stating that people have been running around with magic and the like for tens of thousands of years AND several professions are entirely based on researching and experimenting those very laws of metaphysics in codified manner.

1) Be a brutal slayer stalker, maybe stack Bushi on top.
2) Somehow get a climb speed, either via your race or a feat (Bloodforge has the Scrambler's Gift feat as an option). This gives +8 racial bonus to climb.
3) Take the rogue talent stalker art and use it to get the Wall Scramble talent, which lets you roll twice and take the higher on any climb check.
4) Build into Fool's Errand. Take all the counters and strikes that let you roll Climb vs enemy CMD to disarm them. Watch as you never ever fail.

5) As a bonus, you're also the expert at hurling enemies 10~30 feet across the battlefield.

What's the best way to politely decline the legions and legions of cute Near Eastern whores and concubines the DM keeps throwing at us? It's Garundi and Keleshite qts as far as the eye can see at this point.

Prideful and overly sensitive to criticism due to an exaggerated sense of self-worth- still well-meaning, but not so much as she is now that she's dedicated to keeping others from suffering what she did. It wouldn't be wrong to say she was rough around the edges, but that really hasn't changed so much because it's not like you just flip a switch and lose all your character flaws. She's still prideful, though she's learned some humility, and she's a little greedy. She can be reckless and quick to anger, on account of youth and inexperience. Those are all traits that are unbecoming of a paladin (which she now is), but adventuring is a learning experience and her heart is in the right place. She doesn't have formal training as a holy warrior, just a strong inspiration to do good in the world and the strength to make it happen.

This is just the start of the campaign, and I'm really excited to play a character who still has so much room for personal growth and development. I just have to hope she doesn't freeze to death before it can happen, because Reign of Winter and vulnerability to cold!

i've had a rough day, /pfg/.

we started my new campaign today, after the group decided to switch to pf and placed me as DM.

player 1 is a gnoll gunslinger who, after entering the tavern, started "to look for drunk people, to be able to stalk them when they go outside, pull them into an alley, shoot them in the back of the head and loot them".

player 2 "im a virgin, redhead, amazonian musclegirl barbarian" if it was not obvious enough, so do i know that to say that he has a "thing" for redheads is an understatement.

player three "my character looks like a crossing between mileena from mortal kombat and harley quinn, she's got the mileena maw and is a cannibal and a huge cunt to everyone at all time. also player 1's "master" also has a modified pistol that shoots out a "BANG" flag.

player four (that has been passive aggressive about pathfinder since we started) "i want to show how bad pathfinder balance is by playing an archaeologist bard which i have heard is better than a rogue is every single way shape and form, also picking everything from a tierlisted guide so i can get everything that's the best.... also i don't think i'll be the party face because i hate to RP"

now, player five tried, but it was still "im a sorcerer,i like magic, got a small dragon familiar, is an orphan and an evil twin who wants to kill me for some reason", which is only a small step up from his last character in the last campaign i ran, "im a sorcerer, i like magic, got a small dragon familiar, and i got amnesia and just want to be called by my class name".

on one hand, i should be way fucking stricter and learn to say no more often, on the other hand, so do i not like denying other people their fun because i don't like it.... and back to the first hand, due to the clusterfuck that was the first session, so do i guess that the fun was still denied.
