That's not necessarily true. They were just women who died, and got buried with certain grave goods.

Funny thing, that whole mass grave of Viking warriors which was like half women? That doesn't prove at all that half of Viking women were warriors. It proves that half the people who died in that battle were women. If there were 100 warriors in the battle and 5 of them were women, and 10 Vikings died in the battle (5 of the dead were women), all that proves is that women make terrible fighters.

It's better to just avoid the whole issue and make sure women in your games stay in their proper place. Which is far, far away from the battlefield, except when the battlefield itself comes to the camp train.

That comes from an article conflating two seperate discoveries and then making stuff up.

The "half all graves" figure comes from a series of excavations in England which containing far more women than expected. The traditional view is that the first few generations of Viking settlement in England were primarily men who took local wives and scandinavian women only moved there later. These graves suggest that scandi women were there from the start and the gender divide among settlers was more equal.

The warrior bit comes from a very few female graves containing wargear as grave goods. Items that had strong cultural value and can be explained without invoking shield maidens.

The "half all warrior burials were women" thing is made up. There was no mass-grave of warriors containing women. It's clickbait and nothing more.

Shieldmaidens are great for a game, and I'm not interested in debating whether they existed in rela life, but that particular bit of evidence is bogus.

There is a very old Chinese text about war that talks about how to best use your women troops. This implies that at the time they existed in enough numbers that someone bothered to include them in a manual.

It also discussed best use of elderly and juvenile troops as well, so one imagines it was written in hard times.

Like most ancient history it doesn't "prove" a whole lot, it could have been a theoretical text, but we see all these little bits and suggestions at different times and places that girls sometimes did fight.

I'm sure at all of those times men would rather have them home making babies, but real life often gets in the way of our ideal worlds, so I feel pretty confident it happened.

here's my take on female warriors:

you can go with the slender and lady-like
who had to take up arms against some threat, or to fight for her country, whatever.
or you can go the musclegirl route, which would be more realistic as a fighter whose livelihood is wielding weapons.

if you go with the ladylike version, forget long bows. they took great upper body strength to draw. if you want to be a ranged specialist, go with crossbows.
as far as melee weapons go, most non-rapier, non-dagger type one-handed weapons require great strength to wield effectively. two-handed swords are actually easier to wield, because their weight are distributed between the strength of both your arms, and they normally don't weigh twice as much as one-handed weapons.
either that, or use spears, which also don't require great strength to use.

I've noticed a tendency for people to want to couple "UNLIKELY HERO" protagonists that are mostly, or at least perceivedly, smaller and weaker than their opponents (hobbits, kids, women, etc) with itty bitty weapons as well, so that brilliantly, someone who is already at a disadvantage in height and reach is further disadvantaged with even less height and reach.

Aside from crossbows and wielding swords in two hands, I fully expect female warriors to be able to use a polearm in a reasonably effective fashion.

That's the thing, most PC's are already exceptional people on the way to becoming murderhobos and not sitting at home with wives and kids and jobs.
