What are some interesting special effects for magical weapons? Not talking flaming or shocking or frost, just regular-ass "hits better than before" magical weaponry. Magic weapons should feel special even if they're just +1 or +2 or whatever.
>glowing, whether softly or brightly
>sparkling
>leaves a glowing trail in the air
>audibly hums
>retains a mirror-like shine at all times
>makes sparks when it hits anything
>bonus: the sparks are an unusual colour, like blue or green
>glowing runes on or around the weapon
>a magic circle around the guard and swirling energy flowing from the handle to the point
>>
>utters loud profanities each time it strikes a target
>sighs when sheathed
>cackles when drawn

On a critical hit, everyone nearby sees the hit in slow motion. This is not messing with time but only perception.

When drawn spectral wolf runs along the blade, and if you listen closely you can hear it howl as the blow is struck.

With any movement the blade leaves ripples in the air, like it was passing through standing water.

Any arrow fired from this bow/crossbow leaves a trail of cherry blossom petals in it's wake.

I once gave a PC what was basically the FFXIV dark knight sword effect. For anyone not familiar with FFXIV, it was a thin red tracer line that followed the tip of the blade around, as if it was cutting the air.

The blade itself had the gimmick that the enchantment on it was stupid powerful, but in an inferior vessel, so it had a chance to break on each hit. Broke on the first hit. So it goes.

> Magic weapons should feel special even if they're just +1 or +2 or whatever.

They do feel special. Emphasis on FEEL. A +2 sword looks like a normal sword, it's just more accurate - and it doesn't care about how that affects the wielder. The result of this is ironically enough that a magic weapon shouldn't be used by untrained hands: if you swing a +5 sword at a guy's shoulder, it'll adjust the swing to land in his neck instead, probably resulting in a sprained wrist for you if you weren't prepared. A +1 might not sprain it, but is still going to jerk your arm around so hard it hurts.

In short, magic swords are tiring and painful to use. At best, it's a feeling similar to driving in hard wind, where the sword pushes your hand around. At worst, it twists in mid-swing hard enough to actually hurt you.

More likely a +5 sword would help you more unerringly hit the dude's shoulder, then cleave down through his body, or take his arm off, or whatever direction you're swinging from. It helps you be more accurate and hit harder. Neck != accurate shoulder attack.
>>
>>51799579
Well, probably. Thy would hurt your wrist even more though, maybe even dislocate your arm!
>>
>>51799673
Eh, maybe a little. I always figured it just passes through flesh like a hot knife through butter. Though thinking about the look of horror on a commoner's face when suddenly he's just cutting some dude in half amuses me to no end.

>magnetic weapon; has a slight but noticeable magnetic effect against/towards (can both attract and repell, depending on intention or maybe just what side of the weapon is faced against the opponent's) materials that have magnetic properties (eg. Iron)
>>
>each time the weapon hits/blocks/parries it vibrates and while it does; tones/music that reflects the wielders mood/feelings/thoughts is heard (alternatively, it's the mental state of the opponent that is reflected). >The weapon feels like one of average make in your hand, but while practicing one night it dropped from your hand and you were surprised when the sound it made clattering against the stone ground like something many times heavier. As you lifted the weapon, still just as light as you remembered, you see a small crater left where you dropped it. Deciding to test its ability, with no one looking, you strike the ground again and it clashes with the stone as though it weighed hundreds. You realize the light weapon you wield holds heavyweight power.
>>
>weapon that has some good supernatural ability, BUT you can't loot a body that is slain by it

Neat.

I might use this and then give the player an ability to discharge the absorbed metal as a Legend of Zelda style Sword Beam.
>>
>An ethereal blade that passes through enemies, enchanted never to cut or harm a living thing. Still does damage, but when a foe hits 0 they're put to sleep instead.
>A weapon with the spirit of a long-dead warrior inside. Will deal extra damage to magic users and force the wielder to target them if they're nearby.
>A dagger with an immovable rod integrated into its hilt
>A weapon displaced in time, only the afterimage remains
>The ghostly image of a warrior clad in armor accompanies this weapon and fights alongside the wielder.
>The guard has bat wings and spider legs that unfurl and carry the weapon to a specified place, usually the owner.
>>
The blade slightly glows a unique colour depending on the wielder.
It is said to be one of a pair, used by two swordsmen who possessed a single soul.

Somewhat useful in determining doppelgangers and possessions as the blade's hue depends into the wielder's soul. Not so useful against hypnosis or similar.
Of course, the doppelganger might just have a similar colour to the person it is mimicking...

This would be especially neat if it was a ranged weapon, since it could have infinite ammo (if time displaced ammo doesn't run out)
