I like both approaches, but if you try both for the same block, you'll most likely achieve neither. I really hope they don't water down the aesthetic influence of the culture that they're basing the set on like they did with Kaladesh. From the art, it looks like they're doing alright. It helps that ancient Egyptian mythlogy is very distant in the past and they're not going to offend anyone.

There is Bolas who is UBR. So that is one mythic of the set. It would be a bit weird to get another UBR god and I don't think Bolas will get the god slot since he's a planeswalker and the last time there was an asymmetry (Narset) people complained and bitched a lot. Makes me think there's some big mazerunning hunger games kind of thing going on, mortals going through a bunch of horrible trials and killing eachother just to appease bolas.

So perhaps some real "backstabbery" themes. Instants and Sorceries could help. and hell since there's going to be a bunch of stuff themed off ancient egypt, traps from zendikar may return. or some kind of similar, "REACTIVE" spell.

If god cards show up, I definitely don't expect them to be "enchantment creatures" like on theros. Perhaps they'd be idols? Artifact-God cards.

Formats are basically how do you play the game, some formats are more competitive and other more casuals, also it's related of how do you make your deck. Each format has it's rules, for example you can have a 60 card deck (most formats) or a 100 card deck (Commander).

Standard is the most competitive and encompases the editions from BFZ to Aether Revolt. Other formats allows all editions and so forth.

I really dislike this sudden vitriol for Kaladesh for being India-but-not like people were promised something they didn't get. I'm pretty sure from the beginning it was primarily billed as steampunk world which gained an indian coat of paint because of Chandra's name and that's pretty much it. Personally I find it intering the path they took to get to justifying the India theme. Steampunk often has a victorian aesthetic, which is english, Chandra has an indian name, britain colonized india, so that led to making the steampunk world india themed. I think that's a pretty cool train of thought. It's not an obvious connection yet it makes sense why they would get there, it's not a random combination of things. Could they have had a few more distinctly Indian things? Maybe, I guess. But that wasn't what they promised and I also don't think it should be held against Kaladesh as much as it is.

I don't feel like they captured either steampunk or Indian theme at all. If they did blend them, they overblended. The design feels muddled. The over use of gold made the whole set feel bland. It felt like they bulbed some roofs, made everyone brown, and called it a day. They could have done something more interesting and saved India for another set. On the steampunk side, they did a better job. I wasn't a fan of the actual art, but at least they had dwarves, pirates, thopters, and vehicles.

But yeah, I agree that people do pile on their expectations too high. There are people who actually think that Theros was billed as "enchantments matter" and that WotC failed to deliver. The backlash from people who want enchantments to be the same as post-mirrodin artifacts is absolutely ridiculous.

Taking inspiration from Invasion, Activated Abilites: The Set. Just make these few cycles into an entire block. Every common has an activated ability. It's fun as fuck to play with and nothing like that has been in MtG since forever.

There isn't a particular story to tell on Dominaria (aside of being Liliana's home plane), but lorewise, maybe the wedge schools of magic survived, and the set, rather than wedge or shard, is three-colored. That would be why Liliana could have started white and went straight black.

The artifacts that are colored exist on Alara, specifically Esper, and sometimes when it becomes necessary (the god weapons and gearhulks). The reason why enchantments aren't colorless is because there's very little difference between that and an artifact, and artifacts are much more easy to interact with. To make enchantment creatures you would need to put them in an environment where it matters that your creatures are enchantments for some reason.
You sound like you would prefer it if colorless creatures weren't always artifacts, like with Scion of Ugin or the Eldrazi, which is fair I suppose.

yeah you have to understand Kamigawa is between some of the most powerful blocks in recent memory, OG Mirrodin and Ravnica. So an already weak set looks weaker and people hoping for an answer to affinity at the time were let down. Leading it it be disliked, which turned into a meme. if Kamigawa was to be re-released today as is. It would be heralded as one of the strongest sets in a long time and a great flavorful plane with a unique story.

Pretty much, the mistake with Khans block that Maro talked about was that players liked wedge world better than allied color world, and that he wished they accounted for that.
Basically, the accepted flaw with Khans-Dragons was that Khans should have been ally or enemy colored, and Dragons should have been wedges.
