Listen up faggots.

I love MTG finance. I am a new player who
follows the markets quite regularly. It bothers
me that there isn't a speculation thread up 24/7

Speculation has allowed me to trade up and build a decent collection very quickly, I have only been playing for 6 months but have almost doubled my collection value every 2 months strictly through trade.

>What should I trade for when a new magic
set is released?

Lands are always in demand and with each new block you will see new decks. New decks may cause a spike in existing lands. If the land is playable in multiple formats it won't
lose very much value post rotation and if it is a first print it has potential to increase exponentially.

My friend gave me this advice and based on market history he was 100% correct as I am sure most of you know.

>If you can get rid of a few sub 5$ playable standard cards for land you should.

How do you know what cards you should speculate on when a new set is released?

>I am to green to speculate but when I watch multiple MTG finance videos and you notice a trend that card has potential to be a great card to spec on.

When AER was released there were tons of
people speculating on Oath to Ajani, however
multiple different sources were calling the card
overrated. On the other end I saw many other
"professional" MTG players picking Walking
Ballista as a sleeper card.

>The card tripled and I'm still pissed I didn't pick up a play set for a few dollars.

I am a new player, however I LOVE the
market. It is more interesting to me then the
game itself. Anything I have suggested
should be scrutinized.

Here are my current specs.
>Spire of Industry (Long term)
It is seeing play in competitive modern and
standard (Affinity). In my limited knowledge I
noticed that lands that can produce any type
of mana for a small cost are a good
investment. (I bought a playset for about
3.75$ a piece USD and it has already seen a 30(ish)% increase in value)
>>
>Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
It is already trending upwards but tons of card
sellers (making podcasts/yt videos) are
speculating on this card and I believe it still
has the potential to grow another 2 or 3 dollars
if not more.

mtgstocks.com allows you to follow card
trends and has been invaluable in my trading.

>I know the majority of you know all of this information but I would love to have a thread
in /tg/ dedicated to the financial aspect of
magic regularly.

>Here are some of my recent "success stories"

I bought 2 Saheeli Rai's for 5$ each CDN
because it was a 3 mana PW and the reward
outweighed the risk. The week AER started
seeing spoilers I started doing a ton of
research on the new set and I saw people
talking about the copy cat combo. The same
day Felidar Guardian was released I picked up
another 2 Saheeli for 10$ ea CDN. I ended up
trading my 2 Saheeli for 2 Chandra, Torch of
Defiance (which I think has potential to go up
based on initial spec as well as the advice of
my friends who are long term players) . I also
managed to pick up 2 Mox Opals for 2 Saheeli
Rai's plus a few standard staples to make up
the difference. I made this trade during the
initial Cheeri0's hype. With demand the card
has risen 40% from my initial trade value.
Currently debating on getting rid of them.

I also picked up Paradox Engine for 5.99
(CDN) a piece because I heard it was a great
casual card and many speculators state that
casual/EDH cards can make you some
serious money. They are now sitting at 11.99
(CDN) a piece.

Research has payed off and as long as you
are willing to do a little bit it can go a long
ways.

These are just a few examples of my success,
but like I said I am building up a decent
collection very quickly and I think many
players underestimate the collection building
potential.

Please feel free to shit on what I say, but I
think threads like this have a place on /tg/ to
benefit all of us.

Why did you format your post so strangely? Did you copy this from somewhere?
>>

Naw, I've always been a lurker, not a poster. What do you think about what I have said though?
>>
>>51783656
I think most people here would rather play Magic than use it as an investment vehicle
>>
>>51783682
I get that.
I just can't drop 20+ dollars on a card in good
conscious, even if I have fun playing with it. I
would rather have a collection I can build for
half the cost then pay full value.

I get that some people don't care about this
aspect of the game but I am not making
enough money to continuously buy what I
want.
>>
>>51783682
Also I should say that I am not looking to invest in magic cards long term, just how to build a collection of good cards.

I can afford a play set, hope it sees demand + increase in price and trade up.
>>
Last time I speculated, it was on Declaration in stone which went from 0.5-1 dollar to 5+ dollar. Good times.

Before that I got load of Dig through times, but didn't manage to get rid of everything before bans. I vividly remember how I argued about how the card was fucking broken, but people claimed it's ok.

I regret on not buying into eldrazies before they blew up. I still remember how people were unsure about if they are good. I thought some of them was insane, but didn't realize how broken they ended up being in eldrazi winter. Wasn't really following magic much on those days. But yeah, it comes down to being able to evaluate cards. Something most can't do apparently.

I didn't understand how good collective brutality was. I knew it would be great in reanimator decks and such in legacy, but didn't realize it would be insane in modern as well.

I bought a ton of the Peer Through Time EDH for around $18 shipped a while ago because it was filled with staples and I figured Teferi would just go up over time. I couldn't have predicted Atraxa and how much it would affect Teferi, though.

That's the only real speculation I've ever done. Most of the time, I just try to get playsets of cheap cards that I think might go up over time. Stuff like Eldritch Evolution or Whir of Invention.

So how do you go about making trades? Is it all IRL? Or do is there an internet platform you've had good luck with?
>>
>>51783516
Joke's on you, I just build my decks with booster packs and good luck.
>>
>>51786286
90% of my trades are IRL, my city has a few Magic related Facebook groups which help me find people to trade with.
>>
Trying to sell my Atraxa (just the single) right now, but nobody wants it at market price because of the second print run probably happening soon.

>how to build a collection of good cards
Buy good cards. It's that easy.

I don't trade because fuck people.
>>
>>51783516
Holy fuck have you nothing better to do with your life than make b8 threads?
>>
>>51783516
Bought a doubling season for $15 waaaay back when. Sold it a week ago for 80.
Also, got a sungrass prarie foil from a pack. Sold it for $20 yesterday.(CAD prices)
>>
>>51783516
If your $0.49 cards aren't turning into $11.99 cards you're not speccing.
