How would I go about getting a candy/metallic red without an airbrush? I saw some good tutorials for how to get nice metallic blue/green Alpha Legion posted in /wip/ before; can I use a similar method to do red?

I want to end up around the color in pic related.

See that flecking in brown and green. That's from the airbrush. What causes it, how do I stop it?

This is the first thing I've painted in years and I know the chipping is really shit. I'm still getting into the swing of thinning my paints properly to a reliable consistency so some of the chipping came out like a wash and some came out like unthinned paint, and I could never tell which one I would get until I applied it.
>>
>>51517402
Actually, nevermind. I bet I figured it out. There's a valve on my airbrush that controls atomisation and I have it all the way open. If I close that it'd probably fix the problem.

I should play with my tools more.

Leadbelcher+Magnus the Red tint
>>
>>51517377
Legends speak of a Tibetan monastery where the monks within train for years to achieve perfect hand brushed candy coats. Seek them out, and with the proper dedication, you too can achieve what a trained chimp with a double action can do.
>>
>>51517527
The only way to get that tint is from the $50 set, right? Are they any 3rd party red tints I can buy that serve the same purpose?

>>51517630
Airbrushes are out of my price range currently. Besides, I'm only doing metallic armor on one model.

Tamiya Clear Red

>>51517678
>Tamiya Clear Red
I've heard of this before, but I've only seen it used in airbrushes. Can I brush it on or use it like a wash/glaze?
>>
>>51517728

You can brush it but it's a very thick and syrupy paint so you're probably going to get a splotchy coverage and brush strokes. Since it's only one model maybe you'll have the patience to thin it down and do 5+ coats, but Tamiya also requires alcohol/X-20A Tamiya thinner.

New project in progress: make a Sydonian Dragoon proxy sans gimp servitor.

Far from finished, but if you were to stat out a Sydonian Dragoon as Cavalry instead of a light Walker, how would you stat it without it sucking?

Tonight's painting practice to build skill. Gonna try to get the red armor done tonight. The plan is to do a Khorne Red base, a Kindleflame drybrush, and a wash of Carroburg Crimson.

This is one of my first models painted.
>>
>>51517861
Love it, could so with some guitar wire running from the head to the chest.
>>
>>51519006

I'll make due with as much. I also intend to replace the spine and have some hanging off to form the tail. Also deserves a mane, probably out of tech. And more sockets.

Rider will be the regular Dragoon rider with not much more in the way of changes. This is just the very basic first step. Also the horse is a Reaper Bones Unicorn because I couldn't find a cheap, plastic horse in the rearing pose I wanted.
>>
>>51517377
Not quite the same but for my Alphas I just found a metallic blue paint (which handily enough turned slightly green when diluted with P3 platinum)

So maybe try to find a metallic red?

I gotta make up my mind so I can actually start on painting this army.

That's enough for today I think. I got the armor looking good then proceeded to ruin everything with the eyes and silver bits.

The fucking freehand was a nightmare. I really need to get some new brushes and get a new pot of Ceramite White. I think mine is botched.

If wouldn't have posted evidence I wouldn't have believed you.

In all seriousness though, they look pretty good anon. Though I do get the feeling they're going to start fighting over some forts in a box canyon pretty soon so be careful.

Feedback welcomed and appreciated.

Not gonna lie, painting Nurgle mini's are great fun.

-inside rims of the pauldrons should be silver (I think)
-either dot the end of the barrel with black paint or drill it.

Other than that, looks table top at first glance. There are a couple of places where you've not painted in the lines but its miles better than my first dude, and fucktons better than not painting them.
>>
>>51519811
I'm a bit nervous about barrels, since I have fucking zero hand-eye coordination (For more information, please see pauldrons), but I'll give it a shot once I have the rest of these dudes done.

Cheers, man!
>>
>>51519811
>not painting them.

Are massive gray tide a thing in your area ?
I mean, I often saw (or even played with) non painted unit, by non painted army never.

(Also, when I started as a I child some fifteen years ago, red shirt would tend to scold you if you came too often with the same non painted/non based models I'm still too lazy to correctly base them )
>>
>>51519840
All goods cuz. Are you going to play 40k or are you just painting for the Hecks?

>>51519871
I wouldn't know anon, I've never played a game in a store. Most of my IG and Ork stuff is either third party, paperhammer or scratchbuilds, so I've always been frightened of taking them to stores/clubs.
>>
>>51519908
Gonna play 40k when I have a job and enough money to buy more dudes, until then i'm just painting these guys for the hecks.
>>
>>51519918
I don't want to shill, but seriously consider doing a Horus Heresy era Ultramarine army as opposed to a 40k one.
>>
>>51519936
Most of the people at my GW play 40k, so I'm gonna stick with 40k ultras. But i'm probably gonna mix in some Heresy armours and maybe a Contemptor or two, because that shit is balling.
>>
>>51519943
You can still play against 40k armies, but I feel you bro.

>>51520123

Thanks man, here's him finished. I'm working on the base now.
>>
>>51520598
* Boil not bone. How to paint the skin is a bit more in depth, I really recommend giving the tutorial a look as it really helps!
>>
>>51520598
damn, you work fast!
if i could offer any advice, and far be it for me to given the stark difference in our ability, is i'd try to blend the horns a bit more, but i personally just like the white to brown gradients you see on some nurgle models
>>
>>51520550
The legs and the arms (I think) are from the BoP tartaros, the chest and backpack are BaC Mark IV, with cut-off random parts (a skull, obviously, but also nozzles (?), it's not clear) for the other two. The gubbinz and weapons are from either BaC or BoP (BoP appearing more common).
The line down the middle of the torso appears to be plasticard, perhaps from the torsos being sawn in half and extended using the plasticard. That would explain the placement of the icons over the central chest piece, and the relative increase in the "headroom".
The shoulderpads appear to be standard resin Mark III pads.
>>
>>51520550
Looks like Tartaros pattern termiantor arms and legs, and standard mkiv torso with extra bit of plasticard in the middle
>>
>>51520610
Cheers, I had LoTR on in the background. it helps.

Yeah that's what I went for really, I prefer the contrast over the really slick blends because it creates a nice focal point for the model.

>Fuck?! Help me. The only non-red 40k i have is a squad of Nikilakh Lychguard. What can I buy that has NO red faction colour?
I don't think it's a problem with the official factions. You could have chosen any.

You either really, really like red a lot more than you consciously realize, or you have trouble stepping out of your comfort zone.
I recommend you just pick a color other than red for your next project and stick to it.
Paint a random one-off miniature. Doesn't have to be an entire army either.

Cool, bought the same kit about a month ago and also did 'em, seems like I was a bit too stingy on the paint for the base (not on the pic since the finished one is blurry as fuck) but I think it still looks good. But you seriously need to neaten up your shit m8.

On a side note, are the three tacticals from the Start Painting kit usable on tabletop? 2 of them don't even have a sidearm, just a bolter. I'm guessing 'count as' only?
>>
>>51521583
That's legit awful though.
>>
>>51521955

What I did before I realized I should do it first was:
1. Use the edge of a razor to pop off the raised crackle pieces.
2. Gently sand off the remaining crackle paint.
3. Carefully repaint as much as the foot as necessary to look natural. Plenty of natural breaks on the foot to limit the work needed.

Or if that's too much hassle (I totally understand), a strategically placed piece of shrubbery might hide some of it.

Also, I'm looking again: Did you get some on the inner knee? Throw some paint over that! Never be embarrassed to go back and clean up. Makes all the difference, even once you've been doing this for a while.

>Not an argument.
Since when has saying this become a thing? You are not in a position to declare statements to be of no inherent value whatsoever.
The very point of an argument is to convince whomever you are talking to by pointing out the flaws in his logic and make him see things your way by presenting yours.
Flatout saying 'you're wrong' is the best way to make sure everything else you say goes unheard. Even if he is wrong.

>The guy you're replying to is right. It's a very expensive model done very poorly. Blowing smoke up this guy's ass isn't doing him any favours.
Saying 'legit awful' isn't helpful either though.
Which is why constructive criticism is so important.

Just saying.
>>
>>51522454
That doesn't give him the right to act like an arsehole though. He should have pointed out the flaws in the first place instead of just being a dick.

I actually wasn't being a dick. It's a simple matter of fact that you model looks bad. If I were a dick I would have insulted your incompetence along the way. And you seem to forget that I even, very graciously, pointed out a few of the most egregious mistakes you made.
And lastly, you aren't owed anything here and acting like a spoiled child won't help you get your way either.

But nevermind, I'm done with you and your shitty model.
>>

Says the guy whining about people talking about toy soldiers on an anonymous image board.

Go outside, I'm sure people care so much about your feelings and how upset you are by 4chan that you will have crows flocking to you in appreciation of your white knighting a shit model that looks like a kid with down syndrome built and painted it.
>>
>>51522581
>bluntly pointing out problems with basic assembly is "being a knobhead"
If it were just being rude about mold lines or some shit I could maybe understand your indignation, but gaps that wide on a model that large really shouldn't exist.
>>
>>51522609
Again, the model wasn't mine. I wasn't just sticking up for him. It's all very well and good telling him what he's done with wrong, but how is he to improve if you don't want explain how? Just saying 'this is shit, that's wrong, that's bad' instead of 'that's bad, but here's how to improve it'.

You're obviously an accomplished painter, Andrea you have an abundance of time as shown with your arguments here... so why don't you use that time to help the poorer painters get better instead of being an edgy shitposter?

If it makes you feel any better, red is a naturally gripping color that always acts as a highlight. Even 200 years ago painters gravitated towards certain paints because some where inherently more pleasing than others. It was generally accepted as common fact you should never do a green painting UNLESS you primed it red underneath so some would peek through.

I'm the same way with purple/violet. Just be aware with it and try to devise different schemes.

>huge gaps everywhere

The entire thing is a write off. The proportions are just utterly terrible and there is no way to redeem it. If you try and fix it you're only going to make it worse. Start over and use a tutorial on how to draw a skull or just paint the scale a solid colour and be done with it.

I recently started painting my miniatures and let's just say that I have less than stellar dexterity. In short, the tip of the syringe on my pain boy keeps breaking off.

Just remember that standard tac marines are actually 'truescale' but a combination of power squatting and cadians and catachans being on average 7ft tall means they appear smaller than they should.
>>
>>51524488
Marines are portrayed in canon sources as tall but human sized to absolutely gigantic. Truescale is whatever you want it to be.
>>
>>51524565
its why people call it artscale now, so that autists stop coming out of the woodwork to say 'oh yea but this one guy at gw has a poster that says marines are x feet tall...'

This mini is really hard to photograph in a meaningful way. When I hold it, it becomes very very apparant that the shadows are painted on, but oddly enough when it's photographed I think my brain convinces me that the shadows are naturally cast and the mini looks flat. Holding it upside down kind of works, it sort of breaks the illusion, but not entirely. Craziness.

(Disclaimer: this is just a sacrificial model to test out zenithal priming techniques and so no, there are some imperfections I didn't fix, mold lines that aren't removed, gaps that aren't filled, and barrels that aren't drilled. I may not ever even finish the guy, although I will admit I'm pretty impressed at how the technique turned out.)

If you post something with the snarky "if you insist" shit then it's flaunting. And i agree with you, it's better than %90 of the work posted here but i still say it's GOOD tabletop standard. >why is well-done forgeworld so rare?

It's not. It's common as fuck.

If you meant why is it so rare on /tg/, that's because /tg/ is full of recasts and bad painters.

I will give you that ever since 30k, the amount of badly done FW has gone up but if you look at non-30k models it's almost exclusively well done. I've seen maybe two or three poorly painted titans, and dozens of well airbrushed ones.

I agree on the 30k point for sure. I like HH well enough, but it really brings out the George RR Martin 45+ years-old-with-a-cane historicals autism crowd whose lived reality is entirely bleached of visual aesthetics outside of "accuracy", but I also maintain that many/most FW paintjobs (including studio) are without balance and make heavy use of the drybrush. Case in point would be the FW great unclean one. I've seen maybe two visually acceptable paintjobs out of hundreds

I was looking over my pic folder and found a collage of a model that went through a lot of transformation. He started out as a young but brash Wolf Priest before wizening up and finally, succumbed to the curse of the Wulfen (that also grew his arm back)

Unfortunately I gave this model to my brother so I can't take a better picture of him.

Do you guys have similar stories where you change a single model over the years? A fluffy reason for the change is a plus, too.

>I've seen maybe two or three poorly painted titans, and dozens of well airbrushed ones.
Well yeah - anyone with the disposable income and dedication to the game to purchase a Titan is most likely going to either know how to paint one well themselves or have the money to pay someone to paint it for them. I absolutely wouldn't put the down the money for a Titan if I was a shit painter.

And i dont care how they got the skills and i dont care how he was behaving before i looked at his model. Im just saying to me it's pretty average to look at. Try looking at minis on CMON, the codex and transfer sheet for inspiration on deldar aesthetics. Skull is a good idea but that particular design is weirdly stylized and visually jarring, not in a good way. Some things to improve on your freehanding that I see, in no particular order, are the lack of shading on the basecoat, uneven lines, patchyness on the fill areas, and overall some lack of the neatness that you need to make it look organic on the mini and not like a slapdash decal. Some things that you might find helpful when freehanding are coming in with multiple coats to get a smooth finish, and when painting your lines do them as neatly as you can and get a solid color, then tighten up the edges and cover your mistakes up by coming back in with the basecoat. Props for trying, but that skull was really a first attempt. Hope you find this helpful, I'd like to see you try again.
>>
>>51530432
It brings me joy to hear you say that.

It IS washed. In fact, I used four different washes: Nuln oil, Agrax Earthshade, Reikland Fleshshade, and Athonian Camoshade. Vallejo Smokey Ink if you count the rust effect on the treads.

I hate when my washes look splotchy and slathered on. I bought some ultra-thin brushes so I could apply them precisely.

Between using a cell phone camera and shooting against bright light, I guess my washes are so precise they actually can't be seen in the photo.

This isn't the first time this has happened...the drybrushing job on my Assassins is all but invisible to my camera. They just look black.

I'll probably botch the painting, so don't get your hopes up.

It is going to be in an HoR Kill Team rather than stock-standard 40k, but should myself or any players develop an Inq28/Gorkamorka interest, I'm sure this model will play in those arenas as well.

I'm also considering rewriting its rules to make it a Cavalry Dragoon rather than a light walker. 12" movement base means I can just drop the Dunestrider rules and still get an extra 3" movement out of it.

>>51531447

I took inspiration from the AniMatrix shorts and tournament lancers. I'm just hugely disappointed that GW hasn't gotten on the robotic horse train for 40k.

Cyborg horses would be amazing. And giving them to AdMech would be the best choice since they can afford to vat-grow and sevitorize whole herds of horses for this purpose. Imperial Guard can also work, but their Rough Riders would probably be more like Krieg's claw-footed freaks rather than half-robotic steeds.

>>
>>51531950

Could have them ankle-deep in liquid effect stuff dyed brown/greenish. Possibly get some rat or beetle miniatures for basing. Also, consider painting and then submerging bones and skulls in the liquid effect. Make sure you can do good ripples in it, too.

>>
>>51532174

I don't think I have the time or money. Or patience.

Still, if I can inspire others with the conversion, I've done my work. Hopefully I can give it a satisfactory paint job. I've considered sending it off to be painted on commission, but I figure I might as well just give it a crappy one so it fits with the rest of the Kill Team it's going to live in.
>>
>>51531593
>I'm just hugely disappointed that GW hasn't gotten on the robotic horse train for 40k.

If they ever buff Rough Riders, they'll do it. They only buff models they intend on selling, and Rough Riders are utter garbage.

I wonder how a tank camo scheme would look if he didn't neaten up the initial camo lines. It looked a lot better before he neatened it up to me.
>>
>>51532727
It does on video, until you pick one up and the individual brushstrokes are visible and its awful and it completely ruins the illusion of scale.
>>
>>51532771
Yeah, I was thinking the same. I think it can be done if you used a smaller brush and were more precise though.
>>
>>51532904
Probably true, but the first time I tried it I hated the way it ended up and made it clean-looking instead. That became my standard scheme, so I have everything match it.

>b-but GIMP told me png's were higher quality!
The compression is different.
If you got a big image with loads of space that is a single color png can cut down on the filesize while keeping the rest of the image crisp.
If the image is too busy it's basically like bitmap, i.e. not compressed at all.

jpgs have rasterized compression it evenly divides the image into smaller parts which are compressed. That means if you chose the lowest setting the rasterization will show as artefacts on your image.
For photographs jpgs are usually a better choice though.

Space Marines are *not* truescale, they're heroic scale. Heroic scale makes small features like heads much larger for easier painting, expands the torso vertically to present a larger, flatter surface for iconography, and results in stumpy arms and legs. The result is something that looks goofy, like an enormous baby.

Truescale/artscale uses proper human proportions and makes your Marines 7-8 heads tall. You can do this either by using small heads and cutting out a horizontal section of the chest in order to restore a reasonable amount of barrel, or by lengthening and thickening the arms and legs, thickening the torso, and using a normal sized head. The former option will result in a much smaller model, the latter in a much larger model; approaching the height of a Terminator or Centurion.

The latter method is general preferred thanks to bitz availability and the fact that it's difficult to cut a section out of the center of the torso without making it very obvious, and it has the side effect of making your minis look larger and more "heroic" than your opponents.

Anyway, the point of true scale conversions isn't to make your marines taller, it just happens to turn out that way because it's easier to convert and paint than making them smaller.

Mk 4 tacticals, tartaros terminators, and mk 2 or 3 shoulder pads.

Shit would be expensive.. You'd need to buy BoP and BoC and that'd still only get you 5 because they're all based on tartaros legs. You'd need to find a recaster or cast the legs yourself.
